GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ I Spend All I Have On Musical Gear

Kind of wondering what your thoughts are regarding this 
Im only 20, but I have recieved a summer job the past years, and last year full time job to earn some to go abroad.
However when I was slightly younger, everything was spent on music.
You know the usual summerjob you get job the whole summer then get to enjoy a couple of weeks.
Well I spent it all on a Axe FX and couldnt afford to do anything else that summer!
Next summer same thing but with a suhr guitar.
And this spring I got a new 7 string guitar so know I dont have money for anything else than rent pretty much 
Good or bad thing?
Like an addiction.
Anyone else doing this?

I say do that while you can.
Most likely you'll have more enough time to spend your money on other things - like home repair, kids, etc.
I assume you get a lot of long term enjoyment from the Suhr and the Axe fx.

Save your money. Ok; thats enough of the responsible BS. I did the same thing as you when I was your age. I spent my life savings on a guitar. If I could have done it all over; I'd probably done the same thing. A new guitar gets you motivated to practice and play. Honestly; I've gotten years of enjoyment from that guitar as well. It outlasted all the other stuff I spent money on.(cars, girls, drugs)

You made a very good thing
I spend money only for my music home studio If you will ask me when it's the last time when I bought some clothes for girls, honest I can't remember 
It's a funny thing but I don't care. I'm an "unusual" girl and if you give me money to buy (as an example) a T-shirt, I will return with some strings, picks, cables or buy something for my PC
I'm pretty sure that someday I will push my car to the office but I don't care. My old car still working for the moment 
But I must to recognize that 2 weeks ago I had to get into the car through the trunk because the doors were locked Was weird and fun (first time is hard then becomes habit )....but still don't care to repair central locking or change the locks (this means a lot of money). Very often the locks work very well but .....sometimes no

I'm a bit of a scrooge when it comes to money... as a kid I didn't really spend any on small junk item. All the other kids purchased cheap little pieces of crappy plastic which broke the next day or would follow stupid fads which wouldn't last. I just shrugged all that off, only had a few items. I would save up and purchase some really expensive stuff when on sale or discount, etc. After researching a great deal about it. The questions I ask myself is if it's just a have or will I use it regularly and it will last.
Today, I still have most of those items in good nick and regularly use them daily - I consider that money well spent.
Liability items I purchased and used daily:
Skateboard, Surfboard, Guitar, Amp, Effects, Gaming PC, Roomba, TIVO, Surround Sound, and a StoneDime Frying Pan, etc
Must add up... but I've had and used them for years. Most actually come with a 12 year or lifetime warranty!
However, consider all liabilities carefully, specially the on going ones such as a vehicle. I personally don't like to spend a single cent on them, which I've personally earned from working. Rather I throw all my work money towards assets and passive income, then use the money from that to purchase a luxury item which might cost a few thousand once or twice a year or throw that back into more passive incomes, only if I can recover it back quickly. Always, putting a little or a lot aside for savings. Never use a credit card, never use higher purchase, etc. You end up paying double for it. Just keep an eye in which direction your assets flow, living off pay check to pay check for your entire life or in debt sucks.

Love getting new equipment, last time I went to music store to pick guitar up ended up buying 2 guitars and a amp Kind of stupid yes 
but it motivates me to practice more and dammit its fun and I did have the money put aside and money in savings account.

Picking up quality gear when you are young is really wise. It becomes 100x harder to do once you get older and married, especially if you aren't making money from your guitar playing.

I guess you are well set with the Axe-Fx and a Suhr … wise choice so far
Just keep in mind, the most precious thing you have is TIME and the ability to learn quickly when you are young. Not easy to find the right balance between working for new gear or simple spend time with the instrument.

SAME BOAT!! It's good to strive for "Balance" in all things but I too lean towards the extremes when it comes to gear. I tend to cut everything else out, and buy gear. No travel, no vacation, no this, no that, just saving up for the next bit of kit. It can really get in the way some times, but then again, practice can get in the way too, or rather, life can get in the way of practice, which is why I had to push so many things out of the way to allow for practice time. Again, balance is better, but I"ve not been great on balancing my love of playing guitar and gear with everything else. Usually given the choice, I"ll choose practice/guitar.
