GMC Forum _ Bands and Guitarists _ Blind Guardian

I'm making a very large statement with the topic description but i was watching a blind guardian concert video and the way everything is soo perfect, the guitar riffs never falter, Hanzies voice is always perfect and the crowd chants along with every word, is blind guardian the greatest powermetal act of all time?

Posted by: Pavel Jun 28 2007, 09:12 AM

I have that "Imaginations Through The Looking Glass" concert video and it's really amazing! No mistakes in playing, singing, the crowd is amazing! Nothing to say - awesome!

Posted by: The Uncreator Jun 28 2007, 03:10 PM

Blind Guardian Are Fantastic!!!

Hansi Kursch is an absolute amazing vocalists / lyricist and he also writes some of the greatest Vocal melodys off all time!!

Andre Olbrich and Marcus Siepen are an awesome Guitar Duo, there Melodys are Supernatural, Just fantastic!!! Live its twice as good!!! smile.gif

And Thomen Stauch when he was in the band was a fantastic drummer, absolutely amazing, there new drummer though, Frederick Ehmke, is Unreal!!! Super Solid drum beats!!

One last thing, one of the single greatest experiences of my life was seeing Blind Guardian live and singing along to "The Bards Song - In The Forest" watch a live video of that song, its a Unreal experience!!!

BLIND GUARDIAN OWN smile.gif

There the song i love so much, the crowd does all the work, and its so awesome to be apart of that!! smile.gif

Posted by: Pavel Jun 28 2007, 03:35 PM

That song made me get all of their albums!! biggrin.gif

Posted by: The Uncreator Jun 28 2007, 03:51 PM

The song that did that for me was seeing them play Under The Ice live, the intor melody jus gives me chills!!

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jun 28 2007, 04:20 PM

They are so good musicians and have very original stuff! I have seen them live in a small place called Cemento here Argentina when they were presenting Nightfall in the middle.... The did a perfect concert, as Pavel said that they did in the concert video.
I used to listen them but when I listened to Imaginations from the other side album I got all their albums.

Posted by: Smikey2006 Jun 28 2007, 04:23 PM

Valhalla live is apparently really good to smile.gif my friends went to see them,( i missed them so the world is apparently going to end because i wouldn't miss them for anything ) The band plays Valhalla and walks off the stage, the crowd keeps chanting the chorus for 30 minutes until the band comes back out and plays it one more time hahaha biggrin.gif

Posted by: Owen Jun 28 2007, 05:31 PM

I listened to some of their stuff, it didnt enthrall me that much but maybe thats just me.

Couldnt really complain about them that much either, I just didnt find it too awe inspiring.

I saw them once in chicago and i'll never forget it as long as live. BG is one of my favorite bands of all time. When they sang the bards song...well i mean when the crowd sang it...i had chills the entire time.

Uncreator, I see you have Iced Earth as your avatar. Are you as excited about the new album as I am?

my name is derived from them anyway... (Iced Ern)

Posted by: The Uncreator Jun 30 2007, 04:13 PM

YES I AM!!!

If you would have been here like a week ago, my Signature would be the cover of the new EP.

I love the new EP By the way, And Framming Armageddon looks to be another super kick ass Iced Earth album!!

Iced earth is a HUGE Influence on me!

Posted by: icedern Jun 30 2007, 05:26 PM

You know whats funny is I just found 3 inches of blood last week too. Man I really dig those guys. Not only are they talented, but they seem like they are really cool people too.

Posted by: The Uncreator Jun 30 2007, 05:33 PM

Yeah they do, i really want to see them live, the new album is amazing, check out my review on it.

Posted by: Smikey2006 Jun 30 2007, 09:40 PM

Three Inches of Blood is playing Ozzfest if you can get tickets. I couldn't sad.gif Im so mad that i missed out on threeinches of blood a bit go, they were playing a small bar near my house and the cost was only 10 bucks at the door, my friend and i were gunna go but i had something going on so i missed a great show im sure sad.gif

Posted by: The Uncreator Jul 1 2007, 05:16 PM

They seem to tour quite alot, so im sure they will be back soon enough!

Posted by: Mackietao Nov 7 2007, 12:25 AM

I saw Blind Guardian a couple of years ago here in Sweden. Best I´ve ever seen. But then again it was my favourite band at the time and I knew all the songs. Heck, I couldn´t swallow for a whole day because my throat was messed up for screaming/singing a long for over 2 hours.

And it was like you guys said on that consert too. They went off stage after an amazing show, a long one! Audience was crazy. Screaming for more at least 15-20 minutes and they go back on stage doing 3 songs from Imaginations from the other side record.. just awsome..!

Posted by: VinceG Nov 7 2007, 11:09 AM

Good but not the best.

Posted by: Wyvernx Nov 7 2007, 11:20 AM

Blind Guardian is freakin' awesome! I compare them to a young Helloween up to a certain point, but I really like Blind Guardian alot! It's undescribable

Posted by: The Uncreator Nov 7 2007, 07:30 PM

Blind Guardian are simply magnificent!

Posted by: Fabian Schulz Nov 7 2007, 09:02 PM

I love them, I saw them live last Summer at Wacken at it was the best band playing there in my opinion smile.gif Bard's song is a great song to see live smile.gif

Posted by: Davidian Nov 9 2007, 02:49 AM

I like them very much but sometimes it's too bombastic and their music is to crowded. Dunno that's my feel to them.
But still very cool band, saw them @ Graspop '07, too bad they didn't let Guardian play at the mainstage dry.gif
Really weird

Posted by: The Uncreator Nov 10 2007, 04:11 AM

That is weird, i think i know what you mean about crowded, i thought that about "A Night At The Opera", but it was just first impressions for me, i love that album to death! smile.gif

Posted by: Unleash-The-Shred Nov 10 2007, 04:15 AM

I don't think i've ever really listened to them but after hearing all of these good remarks about them I definitely will!

My favorite albums are "Somewhere far Beyond" and "Nightfall in Middle-Earth".
I haven't listened to their first three albums yet. Probably will soon though.

Does anyone have an opinion on their latest CD, A twist in the Myth"? Personally I'm gonna have to listen to it a little more. So far I feel there is something missing: It sounds too soft (dunno if I'm explaining this right though)

Posted by: The Uncreator Nov 10 2007, 04:33 AM

I think there newest CD is awesome!

Soft? never thought that, the opening song has some badass riffs! smile.gif

cant wait for them to hit the studio again smile.gif

Posted by: Toni Suominen Dec 11 2007, 09:11 PM

Blind Guardian is an awesome band! I have a goal to see them live someday!

Posted by: Rethla Mar 2 2008, 04:29 PM

Yeah they are truly the greatest. I like Somewhere far Beyond and Imaginations from the other side most but there are good stuff on every album. Have to agree with Vinicitur tho, the newest one is a bit "soft and meshy" i think not enough agressivity for me smile.gif
One cool thing is that Marcus has signed up as an instructor here on master class, im really looking forward to his lessons smile.gif

Posted by: OrganisedConfusion Mar 2 2008, 04:47 PM

Simple Answer no. I like them but Demons and Wizards, Stratovarius, Helloween, Symphony X are better in my opinion.

Everyones allowed their own opinions. I personally don't have a favorite power metal band i like a lot. Blind Guardian would be up near the top though. However there are a lot of bands i haven't listened to yet, should check them out really.

Posted by: Marcus Siepen Mar 7 2008, 07:16 PM

Hehe, don't worry, I also like Maiden, well, I love the first 4 albums, after that I kinda lost my interest in them since they changed too much in a direction that I just didn't like that much anymore, but well, they released The number of the beast and Killers, 2 of the best Metal albums of all times, they deserve respect for sure.

Posted by: Enucleation Mar 12 2008, 06:15 AM

It's so weird talking about Blind Guardian with Marcus like..right there XD

But yeah I got into them a while back.

Yeah, Jon Schaffer of Iced Earth and Hansi Kursch (Vocals) for blind guardian have a side project called "Demons & Wizards", they got two albums out, the first one, which is self titled, and a second called "Touched By The Crimson King".

As for getting into Blind Guardian, I'd recommend the albums "Somewhere Far Beyond", "Battalions Of Fear", "A Night The Opera" and "A Twist In The Myth". They cover there history well, and shows a myriad of sound they have achieved, BUT....Any BG is worth picking up smile.gif

Songs:
Theater Of Pain
The Soulforged
Punishment Divine
Under The Ice
This Will Never End

Valhalla
Mirror Mirror

Another Stranger Me
The Maiden And The Minstrel Night
Precious Jerusalem

Nah, that's Demons and Wizards, it's kinda BG and IE. Hansi, the vocalist of Blind Guardian and Jon Schaffer, rhythm guitar of Iced Earth teamed up with some session musicians.

I suggest Touched By The Crimson King if you are interested in them. Some really awesome stuff they have too.

Posted by: Smikey2006 Mar 13 2008, 06:04 AM

heres my question because im really confuzed by this.. are Demons and Wizards a studio only band? ive had people tell me that.. and ive also had people tell me that they have played concerts! i need clarification sad.gif

Posted by: The Uncreator Mar 13 2008, 06:08 AM

Mostly a studio band, but i know they have done some live shows, and i think they plan on doing some in the future when Hansi and Jon arent doing there respective things. Not sure though, these are rumors after all tongue.gif

Every album is something special and has really great songs, although you can recognize a development with every album. So the first albums sound different than the newer ones. Unfortunately you don't like live albums because the album "Live" contains many "popular" songs.

If I had to pick a studio album I would take Somewhere far beyond, Imaginations from the other Side or (or better "and" wink.gif ) Nightfall in middle earth.

I only care about "popular" songs if I am about to go see a band live a short amount of time and need to get up to date on what songs they will be playing at the concert, otherwise, I listen to every song on the album from the first to the end, usually in one sitting and really absorb it, then listen to it some more in the car for about a week, once I get acquianted with every song and pretty much know them note for note, word for word in my head, I go to the next album. Just how I like to listen to music lol. Thx for the recommendations though, I'll probably just get them all.

Definitly one of my favorite and most unique metal bands... I used to listen to Imaginations from the Other Side all the time... really killer tunes!!! The last album I bought from them was A Night At The Opera (...not so much into metal as I was before) so I haven't checked their latest record yet... and their live DVD is as great as everyone up here already said; perfect playing, amazing vocals and devoted crowd!
Still sad cause I haven't check them live when they were roaming in our city last year sad.gif

NO WAY we would ever go on stage like this tongue.gif It was for sure interesting, but it is kinda weird if you have to pose to a playback with a stick in your hand instead of a guitar, but the guitar would have covered too many of those sensors that were attached to those suits. And about our part in the game, we will appear as NPC's, we will have a quest and if you fulfill this quest we will perform a song that we wrote for that game live on stage. Should be fun to unlock myself tongue.gif

so this has been contemplating in my head for quite a long time now. Do band members rock out or headbang to there own songs? Marcus, do you ever get in your car and just listen to a Blind Guardian album while driving or maybe the only time you listen to yourself play is during a live show.

Posted by: Marcus Siepen Apr 30 2008, 01:28 PM

Actually I don't really listen to BG cd's, cause after spending an eternity on writing those songs, recording them in the studio, and then being on the road with them for 18 months, you don't really feel like listening to them at home wink.gif But yeah, I sometimes bang my head a bit and sing along... well, I song along in my car, when I am alone and nobody can hear me tongue.gif

And a nice video-bootleg biggrin.gif

Fan: "Why didn't you play Lost in the twilight hall????"
Marcus: "Why should we?" biggrin.gif

Hope you're coming to Norway soon biggrin.gif But not to Rockefeller in Oslo, or atleast not until August, since Rockefeller have +18 year only policy... I couldn't see Sonata Arctica last year because of that... But in August that wont be a problem for me anymore biggrin.gif
No matter where in the country you come.. I'll be there =D

Lol, what is wrong about my answer, we have more songs than only that one tongue.gif It is just boring to play the same ones over and over again, so we change the set a bit each night, and in that night Lost was not in the set, bad luck wink.gif

There`s nothing wrong about it, but I really like that answer in that situation wink.gif

I'm glad you said this Marcus. I think bands that change their set every night are a lot more exciting and more likely to get people wanting to go more than one night of the tour. I love it when bands change their set around and you don't know what to expect. Pearl Jam played 3 night in Boston and only repeated one song and played 105 songs in total. That is what I like to see smile.gif

Posted by: Marcus Siepen May 13 2008, 09:10 PM

105 songs in 3 days???? blink.gif Thats impressive, I have to admit that we are not that flexible wink.gif Normally we play around 20 songs in a regular show, and for the last tour we rehearsed about 35 songs, so the normal thing would be to change like 3 or 4 songs per night.

Posted by: OrganisedConfusion May 13 2008, 09:14 PM

They did 3 hours every night and a few songs were a bit messy but they managed it and it was awesome. Your songs are a bit more complex than Pearl Jams but I enjoy both equally.

Changing 3 or 4 songs a night is nice I think. Keeps people that see you twice on same tour interested and the people who only see you once wont be too annoyed that you took all the songs they wanted to hear out.

I'm definitely catching Blind Guardian on the tour if you come anywhere near Nottingham, UK. Play Rock City again please biggrin.gif I think you've played there before?

Posted by: VinceG May 13 2008, 11:16 PM

I think Blind Guardian needs to tour in Detroit this year or maybe next year. I missed you guys in 07, so it would be nice to see you guys play again here smile.gif

Changing those 3 or 4 songs is not only to please our fans, it is also to please ourselves wink.gif Playing the very same set for 18 months would be VERY boring afzer a while wink.gif

Do you ever learn new songs to add to the set mid tour? Do you practice as a band when on tour? Or ever add any random covers in the set?

Posted by: Marcus Siepen May 15 2008, 08:11 PM

Yes, sometimes we add some more songs in the middle of the tour, specially before festival season starts, so we can play slightly different sets compared to the regular tour shows. But as soon as we started touring we don't rehearse, we do this intensively before we start the tour, so we are well prepared, and once we are on the road we don't really need any rehearsals, the shows are enough wink.gif (and we are lazy rolleyes.gif ) Only during soundchecks we sometimes go through a song in case we didn't play it for some time and plan to add it to the set that night, but even this is rare. We have an awesome crew so we can limit our soundchecks to about 15 minutes, this gives us more time to do sightseeing or to play World of Warcraft tongue.gif Random covers are VERY rare in our shows... actually they almost never happen biggrin.gif We had Barbara Ann in the set in the early years, also our cover of Demons Don't break the circle, but aside from those ones we always preferred to play our own stuff. The only rather spontaneous cover that I can remember now was Trial by fire, back then Skyclad opened up for us and two of the guys were original members of Satan, who wrote that song, so we played it live with them.

nice... smile.gif

Speaking of nothing I´ve been going around screaming (singing) like Hansi for a couple of days. It´s amazing how much power you can get with that kind of singing.... Real funny to do! But it´s hard to sing a long to my BG albums since I don´t not have that kind of register in my voice tongue.gif
When I learned to master it better I´ll make a tribute song to BG biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif Keep on rocking! =)

Posted by: Canis May 16 2008, 11:22 AM

Heh, speaking of singing.. I've been singing The Bards Song (my favourite song ever!) over and over again lately, for some reason tongue.gif

Posted by: Marcus Siepen May 16 2008, 05:05 PM

Just keep singing, you don't need a special reason for this tongue.gif

Posted by: Guillaume May 16 2008, 08:09 PM

Especially for The Bard's Song tongue.gif

Posted by: Canis May 16 2008, 09:15 PM

I turture cats with my voice, though tongue.gif

Posted by: Marcus Siepen May 17 2008, 09:22 PM

Thats another reason to go on singing, maybe you will get better one day tongue.gif
