GMC Forum _ Collaborations _ My First Student Collaboration

Here it is after so many personal messages and e mails from you guys. Sorry I have been very busy recently but now I am back to contribute more in GMC activities.
This track is in 130bpm and has kinda slower rock ballad feel. You can use any technique. There are places for slow long notes, fast runs, maybe tapping if you want or even some arpeggios. Stylisticaly you can play any rock style. From jazz rock to neoclassical metal if you like You have about 45 seconds to play - enough to show us some creativity. You can start with slow melodies and buld up later.
The chord progression is:
Section 1 Am, Am/G, Am/F#, Am/F (or Fmaj7 if you like), Am, Am/G, D, E7
Section 2 Am, Bdim7, Bdim7 (again the same one, but this time you can move it to the next inversion Ddim7 or even think of this one as E7), Am, F, G (or G7), C, E7
Section 3 The same as section 1
The first 4 chords - you can play A minor scales (pentatonic or aeolian) but it's up to you how much you want to extract from here and go for a more "spicy" approach
The track consists of 3 sections and it might sound unfinished when you stop playing but it should sound ok when the next person takes over the solo. Please do not play all the way after the last chord - think that somebody else is coming after you.
Please pay attention on your guitar sound. This is rock style backing so your sound should be warm with some nice overdrive but do not go extreme to trash metal sound. You can record with effects if you like but don't put too much delay. I need to have a good raw definition of your sound in order to mix it nicely.
Please export the track from the begining exactly as the backing. The first bar is empty, the second bar is click (metronome) and the song starts from the 3rd bar. I only need your solo exported, not the full mix with the backing. Also don't export stereo track unless you use a stereo delay or some other stereo effect.
There is no limited number of participants. You have 2 weeks exactly to submit the track on this same thread. The deadline is January 24. After that I will need 3-5 days to submit the mix and comments. If you have any question you can ask here.
I hope you will enjoy this one and I am looking forward to some great takes.

but if you are less comfortable with spicy stuff, why don't you just keep it simple? There's no need for complicating things if you can do some good stuff with scales that you already know. But if you want some tips, try like this. Wherever you think there is a lydian, try lydian b7 and see what happens. It sometimes work sometimes not, you should be careful here. For dorian, try dorian #4. There is one cool thing called superimposing pentatonics. I am doing a lesson about that. You play pentatonics up a 5th instead of the one you would normaly play. If there is A minor pentatonic, you play E minor pentatonic instead. There you have some A min pentatonic notes and also some other cool ones introduced. They are all in a right scale though. If you "superimpose" again up a 5th, so instead of A min pentatonic go for B min pentatonic, there you have even more spicy stuff It all depends what you are going for. Maybe not all that will work in every moment for the rock style feel but you can give it a try and see if you like what's coming out. I hope this helps.

of course man it is a big compliment even if I had only one person in this collaboration I am here for the good of both sides. I enjoy mixing stuff and listening different ideas and you can get some recording/playing experience and possibly learn something. In the end of the day we are all having a good fun here and that's very important. Thanks for joining this one bro

You can export stereo track but it is going to sound the same as mono. I said only if you include stereo effects with your recording then you can export a stereo track. Why making the file double size? I will have over 20 tracks to run in real time and it helps for processor if the files are smaller. I have never seen in my life that people record stereo guitar in a studio but again I said send it the way you think you should Thanks for being in this one.

Well, that's even stronger reason why not to export stereo tracks If the number goes up to 40 then I might split it in 2 groups to avoid the final mix being 20 min long
I would like to hear your oppinion on this. Would you guys like one very long final track mixed or maybe 2 or 3 tracks with a normal duration?
It will be really too much work for me to comment on every take. This could take a whole week but anyway I am happy to do that.

You mean different deadlines for the different groups as well?
Posted by: ztevie Jan 11 2009, 03:53 PM
Shorter tracks are better... Easier to keep track of who's playing what. If you have 20 people in a track, I often get lost after a couple of minute listening. I'd say max 8 in each track, but that may be too small for your taste?

Hehehe, no. Deadline is the same for everyone. I thought just for the final mix if you like all of you in one track or separate tracks.
I will include the start and the end times for each guitarist next to his name in my final comments so you can easily jump and see who is playing at any moment.

Yeah, you're right.. I'll export in mono then I usually record with 2 microphones in front of my amp, so that makes it a stereo recording.. But I'll export it as mono
Great backing by the way!

But in that case it's ok. Mix your sound in a stereo track and I will include it like that. Your guitar solos will be panned in the center so make sure you have equal singnals in both L and R sides.

Yes you can use only A aeolian if you are not comfortable with any other approach. Be careful which notes to to use when the chord change occurs. It can be all played in A aeolian but with a careful note choice in some parts. Read my previous posts where I wrote about different use of pentatonics. I can give you a tip if you want to expand it a bit. For example on the G7 chord think mixolidyan. It is still the same scale as A aeolian but think of it as G mixolidyan and put emphasis on the major 3rd and the b7th degree as those notes describes the color of that mode the best. On E7 use phrygian dominant and resolve on A minor again when the chord progression gets back to A minor. There are many different ways to improvise here but if you are not sure how to do it then use whatever sounds right for you.
Edit: I added you on the list

Thank you for this. From recording point of view this is ok for me. Maybe it would be even better if you send separate guitars for the harmony. If you are asking about playing I will comment on that when we finish the whole thing. You should know if you are happy with your take and what's good to send for mixing. If you want to re-record this again with your new equipment, no problem but please (everybody) do not send many takes as this thread will get really messy. Pick the one you are happy with and send me only one final take. No rush, you have 2 more weeks for this and plenty of time to analyse your take and improve the recording if needed.

Ok Emir, here's my take. I used direct out from my POD X3 and thought that I was sending a completely dry signal to the DAW, but only after finishing the take, did I notice there is a very small amount of delay on the signal. This is embedded in the take. I hope this will still work.
Emir's comments on his instructor collab scared the hell out of me , but motivated me even more. I'm sound-wise not completely happy with this take (annoying delay in the middle part, which i can not remove), but i tried at least to do it the best i can, so i'm really happy that you guys like it.

Maybe you have some resident programs in your tray eating your memory or doing some background work and disturbing your hard drive. No worries about that, I will not count it in the comment but if you do a proper session work you should always make sure you don't send stuff until is 100% polished. Ok Emir, here's my take. I used direct out from my POD X3 and thought that I was sending a completely dry signal to the DAW, but only after finishing the take, did I notice there is a very small amount of delay on the signal. This is embedded in the take. I hope this will still work.
Don't worry about that. Maybe there was some effect turned on in your software and it was exported with the track. It's going to be ok. Thanks

Thanks guys, this solo gave me some headache...
Emir's comments on his instructor collab scared the hell out of me , but motivated me even more. I'm sound-wise not completely happy with this take (annoying delay in the middle part, which i can not remove), but i tried at least to do it the best i can, so i'm really happy that you guys like it.
Hahaha, you shouldn't worry about that mate. That was instructor collaboration and for that reason I was a bit strict. Comments for this one are not going to go that way but I will give you the honets oppinions. My point there wasn't to teach them how to play but to point out some stylistical, technical and recording issues that I thought they failed. But they are all great players. You just play the best you can and don't worry about the rest. This is not a competition. We are having fun, learning new stuff and getting some more experience

No, no... I'd like to see more of this constructive, truthful analysis in the student collabs too! Most of the time it's too cute and nice. Comments are always "Awesome", "Great" and so on, and I don't think that's very helpful to the player... Of course, a player like you can hear in what stage everyone is in so you can give the appropriate critique. I mean, it's not very helpful to bash someone who's been playing 1 year and tell them how bad they play and it suck big time. Everything must be in comparison with at what level each one is at the moment? I would hope we could see more of that, and not be afraid to point out things. In a friendly manner of course. But I don't know, people are different, maybe some would take it very hard and feel insulted? Anyway, you can bash ME all you want, I know I need some pointers to develop my playing. If I break down, start cry and burn the guitar up... Well, so be it, I can always start collecting stamps instead!

Yes the first part is the same harmony like WMGGW I realised that when I finished but doesn't really matter for this purpose. We can still have fun jamming.
Thanks for joining
p.s. I think that song is originaly by George Harrison
This shows why I need so much help. WMGGW is on my favorites list, but I didn't pick up on that. A buddy came by while I was working on my solo last night. The first thing he said was 'that sounds like The Beatles'.

You know, what I've recalled while reading this? This insane video lesson by Kris "yeaaahh.... coooolll....."
That's true, and it's the most important somewhere in the middle of the learning path... it's easy to stop developing right there... On the other side it's also important to the beginners, like me - to avoid learning some horrible habits

Here's my take. No sweeping, tapping or fast runs yet ... they're works in progress. And I just couldn't get WMGGW out of my head. I used some delay (200ms) and reverb (large room) in the BT take, Emir. Great backing track by the way.

I'm going for something a bit unusual for this... Just to help me learn more about where everything fits on the guitar frets. Going for some clean tapped chord tones - very "similar" to satrianis one that I learned years ago - forgotten the name. You know the one!
Getting it down clean now

Gotta do it utak3r!! Your playing will improve loads by doing it. That is the whole point of the collabs. Don't worry if you don't think your playing is on the level of some of the other players. You should only be trying to do better than the last solo YOU did!!

I've seen you improve a TON since I joined in september Supersize!! Keep working and doing these collabs and your composing and playing skills will improve a ton. One thing to keep in mind is this. GMC lessons teach you to play SOMEBODY ELSE'S MUSIC!! These collabs teach you how to play YOUR music. Keep working dude!!

Do you have a sound card, some recording software and a pedal or POD? If you've never recorded anything before you can check some forum topics about recording and see how it goes. Can you guys help with some useful forum links about recording?
Hey I recorded another one and sry for the mistake don't know how that happen but it's happening again when I encode the WAV file to MP3 with the backing it stays fine when I upload the file without bt it stays very pitchy I don't know why

Guitar pro can't help you as it doesn't support audio recording, only MIDI. I don't know about the other one. You need something like Cubase, Nuendo, Sonar, Logic, Pro Tools etc... Any of these will do the job. There is a free one but I will get back to you when I remember the name

Tried hard on this today Emir and here's the outcome,
This will be my final take and I'm reasonably happy with it. Wouldn't say its the entire song is of my best ability, I tend to never be able to record a take that has no errors
Using my Korean Peavey Wolfgang which has horrible intonation so I apologise for some out of tune notes, I just wanted to utilise the 22 frets and Floyd
I wanted to also challenge myself a bit and have no modulation effects on and maxium 50% gain. So this is relatively dry with no reverb/delay which I usually overly use!
Feel free to add what ever mixing effects and stuff you want man,

True, videos are great ! My take i couldn't play in one go because of different sound settings. A digital device like the POD is not reacting like a good amp where you can go from clean to gain just by the volume pot on the guitar. Something i'm dreaming of to have
To steal lick from video is much easier of course, but i like to do it by ear as well and i think it's more rewarding in the long run. Pedja's latest fusion collab take/lesson for example. Two nights ago i needed quite a while to figure it out what he is doing and today it's online with tabs and everything. It's good to compare now, but i guess i learned a lot when doing it first by ear. There was one part which was making me crazy, i could hear the interval, but couldn't find the notes on the fretboard .. there i really start to doubt

Thanks Can, means alot. I have struggled for years with my alternate picking. I really SUCK at it. Legato and tapping have always just come so much easier to me and economy picking is really the only way I can get any kind of aggressive sound. I have finally just come to the conclusion that I am who I am. I wish you would have made a video of your take. I love to see what people are doing when playing, gives me alot of ideas.

Monte posting the video is really a great idea, but I were thinking of making a S.I lesson/share kinda thing out of my solo, after Emir's comments, and fixing my possible errors. I'll include tabs, gpro file and everything. Maybe you can do it too, because this solo is great imo... What do you think?

I was actually thinking the same thing Can. I have been wanting to do and S.I. lesson. I'll wait until Emir comments and then do a lesson on it if anybody is interested. Would be a good excercise to transcribe my solo. I'd love to see a lesson on yours if you can do it Can.

I thought you did a good job. The key is to just keep working at it. Your solos will get better and better as you keep working on them. That is why I think these collabs are so important. It forces you to apply what you are practicing.

Hi guys
We are reaching the deadline point and I have started writting comments. I can see we have reached 10 pages on this thread so it looks like this one has been quite popular
There are some takes that I am not sure how to judge so I would appreciate if you can all write how many years you have been playing for. This will help me understand your playing better so I can can give more realistic and honest oppinions.
Thanks everybody for joining this collaboration, I hope you liked it and got some new experience with it. I will do the next one next month and I hope you will come back again and play some more stuff.
Cheers

As requested, I've been playing for about 6 years. Hope this gets the ball rolling with getting others to let you know.
Chat soon.

I´ve been playing classical guitar for about 7 years now. I gpt my first electric guitar for Christmas 2006 or 2007, I don´t remember exactly. However, I started playing extremely seriously when I got my JEM for my birthday 23rd February.
Can´t wait for the comments and final mix.
Posted by: utak3r Jan 24 2009, 06:45 PM
I was playing for 3 years somewhere in early 90's and put the guitar on the shelf. Now I grabbed it again a month ago
Posted by: UncleSkillet Jan 24 2009, 06:54 PM
I guess you can put me down for 5-6 years where I played through the 80's - 90's. Put the guitar down for quite some time and just picked it back up about 14 months ago.
Feel free to say what you like. My feeling don't get brused easy.
Thanks for everything Emir

Thank you Emir ... this one was indeed a quite popular collab
I don't bring this together exactly. I think i started guitar with 15 and played for maybe 7-8 years. I played a lot classical and acoustic guitar during this time as well. Maybe 4-5 years electric guitar. Then i stopped for more then 10 years where i didn't played at all. I am happy to have started again since now 1.5 - 2 years.
I know i said earlier how your comments in the instructor collab scared me . I exaggerated a bit of course and still think those comments where one of the best i was reading up to that time. Just be honest and don't hold back

Ehm, regarding my playing, I've started my long journey January 2008 so it's exactly 1 year for me. Oh, and don't hold back your criticism

Hey Emir, I've been playing guitar since 1999 summer, that makes near 9 years. Although I was very serious in the begining, I needed to gain money from music, and I started to sing and I generally played Pop/soft rock stuff, so I was enchanted by the other gains from it and this stopped my progression in guitar. I can honestly say that 7 years of my guitar playing was a total waste. Few months ago, I understood that the time was passing by and my guitar playing was being killed by the music itself, thus in september I joined GMC and after that I started to get serious about that. GMC was the key element that turned me from the darkside... And I am glad I joined here

I have been tearing it up.....in my bedroom for about 20 years. I would say that I have gotten pretty dedicated in the last 2-3 years and REALLY dedicated the last 5 months since I found this site!! Thanks again for doing these collabs Emir. I know they are alot of work and I/we really appreciate it.

Yeah, it's a popular collab and that's thanks to your awesome backing
That's a good question.. The first time I started playing guitar was 14 years ago. But I only played for 2-3 years or so, before I quit due to different circumstances. I picked it up again though about 2 years ago, and have been playing since
I consider myself more of a rythm guitarist, but lately I've been trying to play a few solos as well. So this is a good opportunity for me to see how I do in that area
Thank you Emir for this great collab
Cheers!

Hey Emir,
I've been playing the guitar seriously for about 1.5 years now (with also some less serious playing back when I was 16-17 (17 years ago )).

Emir, been fooling around for far too long. But only been seriously tying to get better since coming here in August?
Nothing will hurt my feelings! Lay it on me bro!
Posted by: utak3r Jan 24 2009, 11:18 PM
Yeah, for me it's too late to hurt me First: I'm too old, and second: I'm too much into playing, you can't get me stop playing

Hey, hope I'm not too late, decided to record a solo. I've been playing for 2 years Don't hold back on the comments
I started about 5 years ago, and only practised occasionally ... mainly strumming chords. I've become dedicated since I joined GMC in March last year.

Thanks Emir for putting such a great Collab together. Writing your own solo, or even just improvising it is one of the best parts of the guitar playing experience for me. And I get a lot of ideas from hearing everyone else too.
I've been playing way too long now to even think about it , but I've heard it said and I believe it's true that it's not how many years you've been playing, but how many hours. Apparently, I've got to put in a few more hours still . So far, a really rough estimate would be that I've put in about 5000 hours so far. I'm estimating that I had about 3 two year periods where I was able to play two hours a day and then the rest of the time, just picked it up about 2 hours per week.

Thanks everyone for the great feedback. Many of you are saying that I can't hurt your feelings with my comments even if I wanted to but my point wasn't about hurting anyone's feeling. It is just to help me realise what level you are on. There are some takes where it sounds like people are desperately trying to use techniques they are not comfortable with (more on this subject soon in the intro text of my comments). I thought my comments will be more realistic if I know your level and number of months/years spent with the guitar. I will never say "hey man you are not born for this, you should give up playing " hahah. I will just give you bunch of advices that you can hopefuly find helpful.
Posted by: UncleSkillet Jan 25 2009, 05:04 AM
Emir, I don't think anyone is worried about you being the Simmon Cow (sorry don't no how to spell his last name) of GMC. I have read your comments on the other collab and I think they where great. We are all here to learn and we posted our takes so that we could get your honest thoughts.
All of the hard work your putting into this massive collab is greatly appreciated.
Thanks bro!

Hi Emir,
I bought my strat in 1980 and then I played with two friends of mine just for fun. In 1982 I stopped playing and startet again by the end of 2007. Since I joined GMC in May 2008 I'm playing more regulary.
bye Strat

I had a lot of trouble getting this down as I wanted it, and I didn't... haha. Hope it's alright
EDIT: Oh, and I started playing guitar in 2003, I think. Played Nirvana/alice in chains-stuff for about 2 years, then moving on to playing some progressive metal stuff, then neglected the guitar (meaning I practiced about 10 hours all in all for about 2-3 years), and then started again more seriously about ½-1 year ago now, but not with very much practice discipline, mind you! Haha

I started to play guitar in 1993 , I played for 3 years and I was pretty mediocre I must say. I stop playing for 10 years aprox , and I pick up guitar again 2 years ago. So that's it.

I played on and off(mostly off) for 15 years. Picked up the guitar at a young age, lost interest, women and other things started to get noticed... Had a few years break, picked it up again, got tired and didn't touch it for 4 years. Now my interest got back a while ago... I would say I have maybe played for 5 or 6 years, not counting my periods of not playing. Had a few years where I only played acoustic covers, gigging with a singer friend at pubs and such. Also played in bands twice, but we were not serious.. One played thinlizzy-songs and the other played 80-s hair metal..
I am too lazy and have to much other interests, I rarely finsih a song and I never practice seriously, mostly I sit noodling around with what I think are cool riffs... Very bad! I have tried now since I found GMC to learn some lessons and get back, and for the first time actually try to improve my skills. Now when I have motivation, I have a family with a 5-year old daughter, so practicing time is limited.. But it's great fun once I do have time to play...

Hi Emir, sorry missed your post on supplying info , so here goes ...
I started playing 2 weeks ago pfft I wish .. who am I kidding
I first picked up the guitar in 1985, should maybe of put it down again straight away but many years later I`m still plugging away at it best I can as I said in my collab on the Instructor board, kinda stuck in the 80`s & imo become very limited but in the last year or so, well since joining GMC really I`ve started branching out into different techniques and trying different styles etc. Enjoying my playing at the moment but still so many areas of improvement, the guitar is a constant forever ongoing learning experience
Cheers Chris

We know you're not going to hurt our feelings on purpose I really liked the downright honesty in your Instructor Collab, and I want to hear where I need to work.. Of course, positive comments are always welcome
As you say, most of us aren't as good as the instructors so your comments will have to be adapted to our experience. That's why I think it's awesome that you ask about how long we've played etc. Makes for a great collab!

Hey Emir! Here is my take.
Okay, I'm really ashamed to say this, but yeah, I have been playing for about 4,5 years. I could (and should) have been way better, but 4 years of wasting time on noodling never really paid off...
I know it's getting old, but I hope this take won't make your ears feel sorry
Oh I also hope I didn't mess up the four points you gave me... If you want to add effects: some smooth delay and reverb would be nice You probably know what to do... I won't assign you with anything specific
