GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Practice Groups

Posted by: Iluha Jun 22 2008, 08:18 AM

After reading through some threads asking similar questions about motivation, i thought about this.

Why not form practice groups? One of the Best ways to get motivation is practicing and even competing with others.
So to start things off, i'm opening my practice group! I want it to consist of 4 more people, otherwise it would too big to be effective.

So if you would like to practice and improve with me, reply here and i will pm you with further details.

Looking forward to practicing with you smile.gif

Good idea Iluha. smile.gif I might be very interested in this, smile.gif but could you tell me what would actually happen in the practice group.

Posted by: Outlaw2112 Jun 22 2008, 09:07 AM

id like to be in this with you... but we should get people at around the same skill levels together

Posted by: Gus Jun 22 2008, 09:14 AM

Sounds pretty interesting idea.
I am pretty much interested in joining in.

Can you pm me the details?

Basicly we will just pick lessons/topics we both want to learn and set goals, and than every week we will discuss our progress and help each other progress further, we could make a recording each week as well to let eachother hear our progress, and im sure we can come up with more ways to help each other smile.gif

Outlaw you'r right! But its hard to determine levels, everyone are better at certain techniques than others. So atleast for the first group, i wont put a level requirement, and im sure that after our first discussion, we will spot our wean and strong points, and work accordingly :-)

this is an awesome idea... i have alot of ideas to make this fun.

Everyone should share their warm up exercises and metronome practice exercises.. Learn one or two lessons a week, they could do song of the week and everyone learn a song, the ideas are endless..

Posted by: chast Jun 22 2008, 04:35 PM

So Nick, Outlaw and Mark, do you want to join my group ? smile.gif
If you do, there is one spot left now in our group, so go for it :>

/edit: Outlaw is already in Iluha's group, so there are 2 spots left if Mark joins us wink.gif

Posted by: Gus Jun 22 2008, 05:29 PM

Kris, would it be possible for each practice group having a forum board (similar to the virtual bands)? rolleyes.gif

In that way it would be easier at least to post recordings.

However in the words of Clubber Lang on Rocky III:

"I live alone. I train alone. I'll win the title alone"

laugh.gif So i'll pass for now, my practise schedules getting prety rough- im learning new stuff all the time so i can add it to my routine.

I can't wait to see the increase in productivity because of this though biggrin.gif

Yes there probably is the option to do something like this with the practice agendas - basically we would activate something called "Private Club Blog".

Let's first see how this works out! smile.gif

I agree, let's see how it works out before jumping into making a whole new forum section for it.

Posted by: Caelumamittendum Jun 22 2008, 08:36 PM

Yes, so far, it already seems quite useful to me. I too don't want to let my practice group down and will do my best to nail the lesson we planned so far.

Posted by: Ryan AW Jun 23 2008, 05:05 AM

I'd love to be in a practice group! But I am at a rather low skill level.

Posted by: PassionPlay Jun 23 2008, 08:25 AM

my skill level is low too and i would like to join a group too ...
i just got no recording gear, so i might not be able to join such a group sad.gif
... maybe i will buy some cheap recording gear.. i will let you know if i do smile.gif

Posted by: -Zion- Jun 23 2008, 11:24 AM

I think this is a very good idea, and would like to join..
However, how are lessons decided? Im pretty much a beginner, and some of you guys might be pretty advanced.

Posted by: Iluha Jun 23 2008, 12:06 PM

Ryan, PassionPlay, and Zion, you 3 should team up and form you'r own practice group since all 3 of you say you'r at around the same level smile.gif

I'll send the full description to each of you and you will have the picture of what you can do in you'r group.. happy practicing guys!

I think that when our group is full we should discuss a few things like what styles ew like and stuffs like that

Posted by: Martin la guitarra Jun 23 2008, 12:35 PM

i would also like to join a group. I like all styles although i am heavily inspired by metal and blues. I play around 7 hours a day and would consider myself as something between beginner and intermediate.

I'm currently learning Muris's Pachelbel's Cannon in D and the Leg Tappin' lesson from Ian.
For styles; I'm in for everything; but I like progressive metal/shred/fusion stuff the most biggrin.gif

I would definately like to be in your group. I think I'd much rather be in a group with people my own level. I like to play rock, a little blues, and some acoustic rythm stuff. I play rythm and lead but I'm a lot better at rythm.

Ryan

We mite have a problem with the time zones. I'll just have to figure out what times you guys get on because I'm in the US.

Posted by: PassionPlay Jun 24 2008, 07:42 AM

Oh you're right... where in the US ? if it is the east coast there is "only" 6 hours difference.

And about Messenger: i don't know if that is what you ask for, but i use live Messenger at the moment smile.gif

That makes us a group of 3 ...
2 slots open for a beginner/intermediate practice group!

Okay sounds great!!!

What style do you prefer?
And do you like rhythm or lead the best ?
No matter what your answer is you are of course welcome in the group, but it's just to know how different we are from each other smile.gif

But that will leave 1 slot open for an Intermediate/beginner practice group
Members are: PassionPlay, -Zion-, Ryan AW and Martin la Guitarra

Very beginner... the most dificult thing I can play it's around the lesson number 5 from Ivan, that one from pentatonics series. I'm quite good in theory, recording and some piano. Just for a while with the guitar.

I thiink I can suit prefectly in a begginers band.

I just posted this at the Google Group my group has set up, and I feel that is the decision I am going with.

QUOTE
...I may sound very indecisive now, but I have gotten my head a bit overbooked these days, meaning that I have too much stuff going on - I am editor of the danish Tottenham Hotspur magazine (for free that is), I am participating in several other jams on the internet, as well as trying to keep my real life going etc etc., and I think I have gotten myself a bit overbooked. I tend to forget how much time the magazine work takes and such.

On top of that, I feel I won't be able to participate enough in this - not only judging from all the above, but also just my very own feelings and discipline perhaps.

So I've got a few too many things going on these days, and I'm currently trying to release some pressure by calling some of these things off, and as this group is the last one I volunteered to, I have to go with this.

I hope you feel alright by this, and I hope you find another group member.

If the group feels a need to get a new member in, I geuss here's your shot, and if they don't I geuss this is just a random statement smile.gif

Anyways - this is not a leaving GMC message, haha, just a "I think I'm better off practicing away from groups". All circumstances considered. wink.gif

Some details about me: I play the electric guitar since christmas 2006 and classical guitar since 7 years nearly. I´d consider myself as an intermediate player. I can´t shred yet, but I practise each day in order to get better. smile.gif
I hope I get an invitation soon. smile.gif
Cheers

I'd want a practise group too smile.gif

Hi, all three of you.
I am in the practice group with PassionPlay.
Right now we are unfortunately as many as we think we should be. Sorry about that. I will, however, keep you posted if there are changes to this.

Or you could create a group yourself. You are already three members right there.

Great idea Ilhua! I'd love to join a practice group. But if noone minds I think I'd like to be in a group a little more open in ways.

I'm really just looking for people to talk to about practicing, and I'm looking for people to share knowledge with. I really don't want to be confined to practicing the same lessons as the others in a group. I just want a group where everyone keeps track of the other's guitar playing journey, and help eachother along the way. smile.gif

I would say I'm a solid intermediate level player. Been playing for 2 years, I know theory pretty well, and I love Classic Rock, Metal, Hardcore, and Prog, basically anything that is heavy and interesting! I also like blues, jazz, and country.

Anyone interested in this kind of group can just let me know. I have MSN messenger, but I can get AIM or something else easily. smile.gif
