Looking To By A Distortion

Hey everybody. I've currently got a 30watt SpiderIII combo amp and a ESP LTD EX-400 guitar, which has an EMG 81 in the bridge and a EMG 60 in the neck. I've also got a piece of crap distortion pedal that I never use because it doesn't even sound as good as the effects in the amp alone.

Now, normally I just use the amps effects (full distortion aka 'insane' setting, with the bass and treble turned all the way up and the mids turned all the way down) to produce a Metallica/Megadeth sounding tone. I was interested in buying a distortion but was wondering if anyone could recommend one.

Can anyone recommend something that they think sounds cool, and would work well with my current set up? Again, I'm looking for a distortion with a good metal tone to it.

Thanks.

I find Boss Distorsion work great, I use a Krank Distortus Maximus which i find works great but with the Line 6.. i have a Spyder II and i just use a Boss Overdrive SD-1 and combining that with the built in distorsion ( ussaly just the metal setting ( insane you lose alot of tone with) and it sounds pritty good smile.gif there are lots of different pedals out there, a great idea is to go to your local guitar shop and sit down with an amp and ask to try some pedals, The sound you get is usually the sound "YOU" want if your willing to take the time to shop around, play lots of open e's and tweak absolutly every nob you have over and over until something shouts " PICK ME PICK ME " biggrin.gif

Im also looking for a good dist pedal...
I have a question.
Im looking for a good pedal for metal. I cant get the the modded pedals only the normal ones. Would you reccomend a ds-1, mt-2 or ds-2?

I heard all the ds pedals are mainly punk...

My gear if it will be of any help:
Epiphone 1967 Flying V
Vox Valvetronics Ad30VT

Note to threadstarter:
Doesnt the line 6 amps have awesome distortion?

first of all: do not buy the mxr dime distortion - it has a really crappy tone

now some dist. pedals i tried out

-digitech Black 13: 7 preset sounds, very heavy distortion (anthrax signature pedal)
-boss md-2 : Very deep distortion, good for rythm work
-boss mt-2 : Distortion with the biggest spectrum of possibilities
-boss ml-2 : Best one for down-tuning stuff, extreme distortion

so it depends on what style you need your for

boss is rubbish tbh.
whether get a distort pedal with a tube in it
or sommit like the ibanez tubescreamer
or get a digitech pedal.
b/c if u get a boss, it is simulating a distortion. and it cant simulate better than digitech. so u mite as well get a digitech.
i would sugest digitech DF-7 look around the threads, u wil find a article with it on it

The best pedal i have used for distortion is the Fulltone OCD.

Not a 'metal' pedal (thought it does malmsteen well) but instead its a rock/fusion pedal, with an awful lot of versatility.

Handmade in USA, by Mike Fuller,

check this page for clips:

I really like Rob Keeley's pedals. His tube screamer modded is wonderful - though I use the blues driver modded pedal more daily. Great pedals and he's a nice guy.

Cheers,
Tony

ps also use a Snarling Dogs Black Dog and an Emma Reezafratzitz for distortion and overdrive. Both are great and got them quite cheap off evilbay. Usually some nice modded pedals on there.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I was really looking for places to start when I go down to the store to test some out, so all these suggestions will help a lot.

jammer91: My amp does have a really good distortion on in, but it could be better. Also, without a pedal I can't quickly switch between settings.

Thanks again peeps.

go to roland.com and check out the sound bytes on their new "metal-core" pedal. i know some people go "uh oh" and the word metalcore but that pedal is effin heavy.
