Hi Roman!
This is place where I will give you assignments and upload videos. You will do the same starting tonight. Bookmark it, subscribe to it as it will be easier to follow when I post new things in!
Lets get started Roman!
In your guitar CV you mentioned theory and harmony as your main weakness.
We will today start from very beginning in theory and harmony.
Here is your 1st assignment!
Theory reading :
- I would like you to read my posts from links provided below.
- Once you read it all, memorize 3 and 4 part harmony in C major scale.
- Learn to apply scale degrees rather then numbers ( I in C major is C, IV in C is F etc).
- Write out in this thread all notes for 3 and 4 part harmony in C major scale.
Time limit for 1st assignment would be a week from now! (13th of September).

I would also like you to answers questions bellow :
1) What is scale? What defines it?
2) How do we create chords in Major scale (for example)? What interval is used to build chords?
3) How many notes does Major scale have?
4) How many modes does Major scale have?
5) Name all the modes in Major scale.
6) Name formula of Major scale using half steps and whole steps.
7) How many types of triads (3 note chords) we have in any major scale? Name them.
This should be enough to get us going!
You can send me answer to those questions via PM as I will give this small test to couple of guys here on MTP. I don't anybody to cheat and copy answers from each other!
Let me know if you have any questions Roman, I will be more than happy to help out!
Hey Pedja,
that seems to be a good starting point, because theory is one of my biggest weakness. I will read the posts and ask you questions if i need help.
cheers
Roman
Hey Pedja,
well let's start
I read all two links and i want to start to answer your first excercise (Not the test it comes per PM).
Perfect Roman, you got it man!
Now you can look in the beginning of the thread and find extra questions I asked you to answer!
That's cool:D
One quick question what is meant by minor7b5. I don't know what the b5 does.
Thanks for the answer. By the way you got a mail (PM)
Got it all Roman. Will respond to it a bit later because I am recording alternate picking exercises right now. You will get more questions so hang around
Roman, we are continuing with more theory assignments for you! Since you already read two links I provided, this shouldn't be too difficult for you.
- Read my theory and harmony posts from links provided bellow.
- Once you have read everything, write out cadences for following tonal centers
1) F Ionian
2) G# Dorian
3) C Phrygian
4) E Lydian
5) A Mixolydian
6) F# Aeolian

Hey Pedja,
i have a little question about cadences. Is there always the same (i call it formular) for building chord progressions. For example every Ionian mode have the 2 possibilities I IV V I or II V I?
If yes i think i could answer your assignment soon .
Roman
Hey Pedja,
here are my solutions. I hope i did it the right way I am looking forward to your answer.
1) F Ionian
I IV V I: F Major, Bb Major, C Major, F Major
II V I : G minor, C Major, F Major
2) G# Dorian
I IV: A# minor, D# Major
I IImin: A# minor, C minor
3) C Phrygian
Imin bIImaj: E minor, F Major
Imin bVIImin: E minor, D minor
Imin bIImaj bVIImin Imin: E minor, F Major, D minor, E minor
4) E Lydian
I II: A Major, B Major
I VII: A Major, G# minor
I II VII I: A Major, B Major, G# minor, A Major
5) A Mixolydian
I bVII: E Major, D Major
I Vmin: E Major, B minor
6) F# Aeolian
Imin IVmin Vmin Imin: D# minor, G# minor, A# minor, D# minor
Imin bVI bVII Imin: D# minor, B Major, C# Major, D# minor
Roman you did good for the first example only. For the rest you have to relate to original key and then based on that figure out how many sharps or flats that key has and write the cadence.
Where does G# Dorian come from? Dorian is what mode in Major scale?
Compare everything to C like I did in that post, it should help you to figure out keys!
Hey Pedja,
here is my next try I hope i got it now.
2) G# Dorian
I IV: G# minor, C# Major
I IImin: G# minor, A# minor
3) C Phrygian
Imin bIImaj: C minor, C# Major
Imin bVIImin: C minor, A# minor
Imin bIImaj bVIImin Imin: C minor, C# Major, A# minor, C minor
4) E Lydian
I II: E Major, F# Major
I VII: E Major, D# minor
I II VII I: E Major, F# Major, D# minor, E Major
5) A Mixolydian
I bVII: A Major, G Major
I Vmin: A Major, E minor
6) F# Aeolian
Imin IVmin Vmin Imin: F# minor, B minor, C# minor, F# minor
Imin bVI bVII Imin: F# minor, D Major, E Major, F# minor
Hey Pedja,
i think i read these rules somewhere but i forgot it to do it in this example. So what things are wrong now in my solution only C Phrygian if yes here is my correction:
Imin bIImaj: C minor, Db Major
Imin bVIImin: C minor, Bb minor
Imin bIImaj bVIImin Imin: C minor, Db Major, Bb minor, C minor
Ps: did you had the time to make the GP tab for the intro i send to you? Thanks in adnvance
Excellent corrections Roman.
I did not get the chance to do that Guitar pro file yet. I hope to do it by Monday as I have collaboration planed and have to record 2 video lessons over weekend now. Will send it to you via PM as soon as I am done with it. Thanks Roman!
Hey Pedja,
I am glad that you like my corrections . You make a collab? Maybe i will join it when the backing fits to my level of playing at the moment
Roman,
We continue with more theory assignments!
I want you to read my posts on following two links:
- http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=30555
Since I will be out of town today and back tomorrow, I will ask you a lot of questions regarding these topics. We will cover everything in there, so make sure you read through it until you feel you got it 100%
Let me know if you need any help!
Pedja
HEy Pedja,
thanks for your new assignment. I read your two posts once but i think to answer your question i need to read it again. I'm looking forward to your questions.
Great Roman!
I will post questions later today to give you more time to read it. Feel free to respond to them whenever you are ready.
Hey Pedja,
I just want to ask you what are the next steps here? What should i do?
By the way hope you had the time to finish the gp5 tab for me Me and Skalde need it so much
Hope you had a great weekend by the way
Roman as I promised, here is Guitar pro and PDF of your transcription. Try to play it now. I didn't put fingerings as it is your riff but hopefully you realize that this riff is in odd time signature (6+4 not 5/4). Let me know if it works
Hey Pedja
thanks for your work. I don't have the last version of gp5 so it is possible for you to save it as a gp4 ?
Thanks Pedja
now i can open it. Now i realize that the time signature is very strange Skalde and i didn't expext that Maybe that was the reason why dont get it right.
Roman, tell me everything you know regarding cycle 4 and 5?
HEy PEdja i will try to answer your assignment at the upcoming weekend. Tomorrow i have to go to a dentist and he will remove two of my wisdom tooth. So i think i have two hard days with lot's of pain.
Ok Roman. Good luck at the dentist!
I will post a new thread with new rules for you this month. You will basically get one assignment per week that you will need to complete.
Yeah i read the new rules about the MTP. Well i think i will get these things down every week.
Perfect response Roman, you got it man! Well done
