I had a long discussion with Todd about getting a brand new guitar, because I was tired of getting second hand ones and finding faults with them, and he told me to try every single guitar at my local music store before buying one.

I went in that store looking for an Ibanez, or possibly a Jackson. And I came out holding an ESP biggrin.gif

I don't know why, and I have NEVER played an ESP before, but that was probably the only guitar in the store which connected with me, and I never had so much pleasure playing a guitar before, and I know I sound like a hippy now tongue.gif

Anyway, the model is an ESP M-II Standard. Got it for $450 with a few accessories. Maple neck (its fast!). EMG 81s (and I like the sound of those EMGs probably because I play metal 9 out of 10 times I pick up any guitar). Floyd Rose Trem (I've been abusing the whammy and its staying in tune at least for now, although I still have my doubts about Floating trems).

Pictures (sorry I'm no photographer dry.gif ):

Comments please! biggrin.gif

Congrats!! I've owned a few of these (and a bunch more ESPs) over the years... they've always been solid guitars and have never let me down!

Nice guitar man. I like ESP's I was thinking of getting one to and putting these decals on. I'm wondering if the decals would interfere with the pickups

I've had a couple ESP guitars like this with EMG 81/85 and floyd rose. Wish I held on to one. Perfect for metal, crazy dive bombs, and shredding. smile.gif ENjoy the new axe!

Thanks smile.gif and no, the decals wouldn't interfere with the pickups unless you put a bunch of them (say 25) on top of each other tongue.gif So, no it wouldn't interfere smile.gif

Even though the action is a wee bit high for my liking, I really don't have a problem with it right now, so I haven't changed anything tongue.gif Also, what do you think about EMG HZ pickups?

I play with higher action myself. I prefer it better for bending and overall feel but that is a matter of taste. Though I remember when I had my ESP's I'd play them with the lowest action possible. smile.gif Adjusting the Floyd's and getting the intonation just right can be tricky and a hassel sometimes. Maybe have your shop set it up to your action and string gauge preference if you're not totally comfortable doing it yourself. Then again, you might end up getting used to higher action as you break it in a little more.

My friend had similar ESP guitar (MH-301 neck through) with EMG HZ's...playing through a Randall solid state head ( I think it was the Warhead half stack). Really a decent high output pickup. It handles well under decent amount of distortion, great for metal stuff... like pinch-harmonics, palm muting articulation, and overall "hot" lead and rhythms. Can handle drop tunings well too but lacks a bit in the clean sound department when dropping the tuning down. I'm sure with some tweaking you'll dial in some nice clean tones too if needed. With a bit of chorus and delay I remember sounding quite nice.

You can play fast on higher action? Like sweeps and stuff easily? Cause if you can, I'd rather try getting used to higher action biggrin.gif

Yeah I just looked up MH 301, looks pretty sick biggrin.gif in a good way of course tongue.gif I'm not a fan of active pickups, even though EMGs are pretty damn good. So I'm probably gonna trade these EMGs for EMG HZ H3 and H4 smile.gif I've played them, they sound awesome to me smile.gif

You can sweep with high action for sure. I've read on a couple occasions that Yngwie and Steve Vai play with high action. I saw some picture of Yngwie's "play loud" strat and action was pretty high. It doesn't make it easier to play fast though... just having too low action you'll lose some sustain and attack.

Have you checked out this ALexi Lahio EMG HZ?

Well, then I guess I'll leave the action as it is for now tongue.gif

Alexi Laiho EMG HZs, yeah I've seen them but I've never tried them, and I don't know if the guy at the store will trade it with my EMGs for those.

Floyd's are pain if not set-up correctly. I sold my Ibanez with Edge tremolo because I hated tune it every time I put new strings.

What kind of amp you have ? I mean if you're looking for certain sound maybe you should get a new amp instead of swapping pickups.

Here a video I found. Check it out !

Yes, the store guy said that I should block the trem whenever I'm experimenting with it and I'll do fine but it'll come to me with experience smile.gif Edge tremolos (Except the edge zero) are not good at all, even the store guy said to me. He said if I wanted to buy an ibanez, I should get the edge replaced with a FR smile.gif

I have a Fernandes FA-10 amp with a Zoom G1N effects processor. I'm playing with the EQ settings these days. I've tried EMG HZ and they sound a bit better than EMG 81s.

Thanks for the video, WeePee biggrin.gif That's what I was talking about, the EMG 81 has more presence and is more "vibrant" if you know what I mean, while the EMG HZ has more crunch with distortion but it sounds a bit more... how should I put it... its a bit more expressive, at least to me smile.gif

Do you like EMG's active pickups more than EMG's passive ones? Even though I play metal mostly, I still think EMG HZ are better for me cause I do play some soft stuff too tongue.gif

Thank you Darius smile.gif Yes, he did, and before this, I must say I did think that experience would never fail, but now I know it does smile.gif That's why I made the whole topic so that people here could help me choose a new guitar tongue.gif
