hey guys,

update from my mic problem

i finally had the chance to re download gear box...and with everything up, i still can get a good volume recording, even with a mic boost...for it to be at a somewhat good level, i have to raise it +30 db

any suggestions?

im thinking about getting a decent usb mic until i can afford a better mic..unless someone here can fix my problem!

btw my mic is a pg48

Ok update:

i turned up the gain all the way...and the compressor up all the way...now its usable!

but i dont think its practical

what do you guys think about USB mics?

like the Blue snowball (i think its what its called)

It's plug and play man, cheap, and you've heard the sound quality from my stuff. For $100, it's the best condensor mic there is.

I was also thinking of the Samson C7U or something, but it didn't come with a stand. They about the same price though.

You need a pre-amp, some mixers are able to perform that way or as you did you can do it by a virtual software.
I think any mic would have the same problem unless you have an audio card prepared for that (and that would be an audio card that has a pre-amp for the mic-in)

I agree with Ramiro. You need a preamp if your soundcard doesn't have one. Sircraigery suggested Samson. I have Samson C05 and it works great. It's also not expensive. Since my mic is a condenser one and my soundcard doesn't have phantom power I had to buy a preamp TUBE MP. Very small and cheap unit (30-40$). There you can boost your signal as much as you like.

I think they are great for small home studio projects, no need for pre-amp and high quality audio interface and the results are more than decent smile.gif

I had one Samson USB mic and it worked ok but I wasn't able to get direct monitoring. If I listen on speakers what I am recording I have half a second delay. If you don't need that feature then it works OK.

Yes, it depends on the program for the delay I've found. Audacity is really bad for it, but garageband is excellent (infact I haven't noticed any).

GX doesn't have a preamp, so it's understandable that you have a weak signal. Get a Behringer MIC100, or ART Tube MP Studio, they are cheap, but do the job.

everyone else has already covered it, but yes a pre amp is what you need. There are many many pre amps to choose from. Something as simple as this one will do the job http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/produ...eamp?sku=180581
I've been using a Studio Projects VTB-1 pre-amp for many years now. I bought it back when I couldn't afford much else, and it turned out to be a great choice. I think it was a bit cheaper back when I bought it (it runs for about $139 now). Its got one microphone input, and it also has a direct input for instruments, such as the guitar. I use to get some extra gain from my guitar signal before sending it to my soundcard. The mic pre-amp sounds pretty good for the price, actually very good for the price. There's many to choose from though, just make sure to read some reviews on whichever one you decide, and if you can, try them out first.
