GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ Only Three Real Chords?

Posted by: SonofDestiny Feb 8 2009, 12:18 PM

Hey guys,

So I got into an argument on youtube with this dude who claims that there are only three real guitar chords. I don't know what he bases it on and he doesn't really care to explain either. Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSz6br6lUOA

Do you guys get it? Is he right or is he just frustrated and likes to project this on other people? huh.gif

There is more than 3 chords and he is wrong smile.gif

Major , minor, augmented, diminished, sus2, sus4 and other untraditional type of triads (voicing in forths, clusters etc).

So thats just triads, once you do 4 part chords it extends drastically.

Major6, Major7, Major7b5, Major7#5, Minor6, Minorb6, Minor7, MinorMaj7, Minor7b5, Dominant7, Dominat7b5, Dominant7#5, Diminished7, DiminishedMaj7 ...

Then you add tensions and you get even more possibilities.
I don't even want to go into Triad over Bass note concept (slash chords) or Poly chords where you stack one chord in the bottom and one on top!

So yes answer is there is more than 3 chords laugh.gif

As far as 5 shapes go, you can observe every chord voicing like it came from some sort of CAGED shape. I see nothing wrong with that.

Hope that helps.

Hahaha poor fellow, he's clueless. Even if he's talking about only the "shapes" there are more than three for sure. Tell him that he might want to check the Scott Henderson's chord chart hahaha tongue.gif

Oh dear.... rolleyes.gif
Well, I suppose youtube isn't really the place for intellectual debate or enlightenment. Not in my experience at least

Posted by: MickeM Feb 8 2009, 10:07 PM

A discussion on youtube must be so useless dry.gif Youtube is so full of experts who tells people this and that and knows everything but don't have any videos of their own playing to back it up.

Man, that read was quite "refreshing", almost forgot how the rest of the web looks:D

Posted by: berko Feb 8 2009, 10:13 PM

The poor fellow was probably referring to the shapes (like major and minor) that can be moved around the fretboard using barre (+open chords) or in basic swept arpeggios. He probably got stuck at the first few pages of the book he was referring to. laugh.gif

I really have to relearn some theory- this guy is clearly reinventing the wheel here laugh.gif

Posted by: Trond Vold Feb 8 2009, 10:53 PM

I'm amazed at how convinced he is that he's correct about this...
There's definetly alot of strange people on youtube smile.gif

Posted by: Tolek Feb 8 2009, 10:56 PM

He definitely does not know much about theory. laugh.gif I bet he isnĀ“t able to play over any other progression than I-IV-V...

+1

I know when I know what I am talking about, and no one can make me doubt that.

anonymous arguments on youtube.... eh.... pointless. I think people frequently feel the need to show-off what they "know" (should be read as - "what they think they know") to other, anonymous people on the internet... you see it all over the place. And It's obvious, to me, that that one guy was looking for an argument when he dropped those expletives after the first response. laugh.gif

Oh well, I used to be one of them, then I got my head on straight.

Yeah don't feed the trolls, the internet is full of them. People who go on forums like this just to tick people off by arguing ridiculous things.

Posted by: sted Feb 9 2009, 12:50 PM

Wow! Only three chords?? Damn I am wasting my time practising then, its all so simple laugh.gif

Maybe its Francis Rossi from Status Quo, do they play dual lead as well? laugh.gif

I hate the way people flame on the net, tell him to post his address and we'll go round and have the discussion over a nice cup of tea.

Then we'll beat him over the head with my old jackson performer.

Posted by: SonofDestiny Feb 11 2009, 03:27 PM

Sted ... hahahahaha. Best comment ever biggrin.gif

EDIT: I see in the comments that it looks like I've started the fight, but the dude called me an idiot after me asking a pretty normal question. That's how it got started. I'm not an internetbully biggrin.gif
