How would this video have done if the person playing were very hard to look at? I've heard better playing buy various dudes on youtube that have a fraction of the views.

Touche' good sir. It did seem like the guitar vids with pretty gals got quick traction while there are some great vids with regular guys that go unwatched. There is just so much content coming down the stream from youtube, it's tough to gain traction. I have noticed there is always a fluff and ola vid on the front page of suggestions and neither of them are gals, I don't think, so there is hope

Let's take Steve T videos as a different example. I'm sure it's not just other guitar players who watch this. I recon it's a bunch of dumb kids as well, given his sense of humor ... or lack of it. I hope noone get's offended. It's definitely not my thing though

Never thought about riding a goat, but it would probably make good click bait! The gal in the video is fine player to be sure. As you mention, it does take more than good playing to drive traffic. We are visual creatures after all

Very true! Also most people discover new music now through youtube more than any other streaming service. Even more than spotify. So the visual element is very important indeed. There are better players than the gal in the video on youtube who don't get anywhere near the traction that she gets. It's a real advantage to have a thumbnail for the vid with a pretty girl in it. I know that sounds sexist and just wrong. It's just how things work.
