Super Newbie.........g Chord, Difficulty w/ pinky control

I've been doing the basics w/ strumming and scales but I'm having ALOT of difficulty w/ hitting G and anything that requires a stretch w/ the pinky involved. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Start on any string (higher strings, g, b, e are easier for most people) and put your first finger on the first fret and play it. Keeping it there, put your second finger on the second fret and play. Then the third, then your pinky on the fourth fret. If that's too hard, start on the second fret or whatever is easiest for you Then do it by taking your pinky off, then your ring finger off, etc. I hope you get what I mean. Thats an exercise that worked for me. There are other great ones though, check out some of danilo's lessons or Marcus Siepen's first lesson for example. To get the chord stretch right - make sure you first can fret the actual chord, and experiment with your thumb's placement. Watch videos to see different ways of holding the left hand thumb when playing chords. Once you can strum - let's say - an open G chord without getting unwanted muted strings, start practicing a chord switch. Perhaps G to A, over and over. I think it's a good idea to as quickly as possible nail an actual chord transition - as this will lead you to playing actual music quicker! Good luck!
