I wasn't very happy with my bass tone, but I have to experience recording bass (and not much experience playing it, but that doesn't stop me).

I played my Variax bass through a POD X3 Live straight into Reaper.

Any tips or critique you want to give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Sounds like you nailed it man !

I have just a question regarding sound...
Did you pust Camcorders audio and video , or you used audio from DAW ?

I think you should increase volume for your bass a bit - but thats personal taste.

Overall really cool man smile.gif

Hey man!!
This was pleasant surprise! You played it very well!
Here are some suggestions about the tone and recording bass.Try finding a clean and even bass tone on all frequencies..You don't want for it to be too bassy or something, just a flat eq on bass , middle and treble...Variax bass acts as a DI-box unit also, so you should go to POD X3 and disable all modeling/simulations in there and set it up just to record your bass guitar tone as it is..You want a simple and even tone...In the recording your are sounding too bassy and lacking definition for all notes to be heard..That definition will be found in the middle frequencies..It may be sounding a little bit "nasal" to you in the room but those frequencies will allow you to cut through mix better..Later on once you record the defined and healthy signal you can do some EQ-ing on the track in Reaper , to make it sound what you like..For slap tone bass players often raise bass and treble frequencies a bit...
Here is how most bassist record their track for albums :

1.They Mic the bass amplifier and record their setup
2.They go straight from bass to a DI-Box unit and then to the mixing board (and they eq the signal on the mixing board to their likings)

They get the two tracks this way and mix them together...Mic-ed amp will give them color and growl and Di-box signal will give them the needed definition for all notes to be heard and to cut through the songs mix
Both are very very important...

So all in all , try finding a basic bass tone that sound defined and record it that way.Later on apply EQ in Reaper and tweak the tone to your liking..You can try adding a compression a little to smooth out the playing..

Regarding performance in this video , its very good..Only in the second part , try holding the plucked notes a little longer (like in the main video of the lesson) and pay attention to left hand slapping technique...You can practice it specially , with a metronome try patterns like : thumb , left hand slap, thumb , left hand slap ....and so on until you get the left hand slap to sound even and "get the percussive sound heard"..

Have you seen the community tab inside lessons - https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/misc-less...ap-bass-lesson/ . You can post your video directly inside the lesson's community tab as a video response smile.gif That would be cool!

Good work man!!

Keep slapping! smile.gif

Pedja: The audio was recorded through Reaper and sync'ed back up in Sony Vegas.

All: Thanks for the compliments. I've been practicing bass on my lunch hour at work.

Bogdan: Thanks for the recording tips. I'll try those when I record my next bass clip. Hopefully, I'll post my take of this next. https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/hammer-on-slap-lesson-3/
