This might sound as a weird question but here we go.

When playing something like, for example 14 - 13 - 12 on the B string (just as an example), should I place my first, middle, and ring finger on the frets and then pick 14, raise the ring finger, play 13, raise the middle finger, and then play the 12, OR:
place only the ring finger on the 14 fret, then after its picked raise it while placing down the middle finger on the 13 fret, then after its picked raise the middle finger while placing down the first finger on the 12 fret.

I feel like naturally I want to do the second way, but I feel like the first way might be the better thing to get used to.

Hopefully my explanation was clear enough.

Thanks guys.

I am practicing using 1 finger for each fret, so I would use middle, ring, pinkie for that. If playing on 1st through the 4th fret I use index, middle , ring , pinkie and pinkie stretch for any on the 5th ( just an example)

yeah, its good to practice like that because later on stretches are more comfortable for you.

Well, if you start at 12 play that then play 13 then play 14, when you get to the next fret each time, don't pick up the last finger you placed down.

For example, if you play 12 first with the index finger, leave that finger on the fret, and continue to 13 and so on. This makes things easier for you in the long run.

But for what your saying starting on 14 then 13 then 12, I think you would do the same thing as explained above, except backwards, have all fingers on, then decend.

Also though, if your like playing a fast passage, then it will be hard to do so, so at that point I would do each individual finger.

To me it depends on whether or not you are playing mainly in one position (12th in the example) or moving around the fret board a lot.

If I'm staying in one position then I find 1 finger one fret AND all fingers down behind the one fretting the note good - as in example 1. hat way when I pull off the finger for the pull off is already there. However if I'm moving around then I don't anchor but sort of float and I also don't do one finger one fret as sometimes I have to double up/use the same finger for more then one position to move to the next fretboard position.

As an example:

----------------------------------------------
--12 13 15-----------------------------------
------------ 16 14 12------------------------- This I would do as example 1
-------------------------12 13 14------------
----------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------

-------------------- --9----------------------------
--11 12 15 10 13----- 11 7---------------------
------------------------------ ---7 6 5-------------- Position changes so example 2
--------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------

I don't play the 11th to 7th on the B string as a positional slide with middle finger.

I finger it as 9th fret 1st string - index; 11th fret b - pinky; stretch down to 7th with middle for pull off 11 to 7; roll middle to 3rd string 7; index on 6th and slide to 5th. Sounds worse then it is - trust me wink.gif

Hope that made sense.

Cheers,
Tony
