I recently bought MSI StarCam Clip II, it works fine, has auto-focus, nice picture quality, built in mic... I use it for talking. I suppose it can be used for recording.

Quickcam 9000 can be a very good solution for some basic recordings and video chat.
Regarding the other problem, you need a video editor. Movie Maker comes free with Windows, and it can serve the purpose, but I really recommend Sony Vegas Movie Studio. It's cheap (~55$), and much better than Movie Maker. It is non linear editing software, which means you can have several tracks (layers) of video in one project, while Movie Maker is linear and has only one video track in timeline that you can use. When I record I usually record Video in Vegas, and record audio in DAW. Then I sync video and audio files together in Vegas. It helps greatly if you have somekind of audio information on the video file, so you can sync the files using the audio peaks. If you cannot record some kind of audio with that Webcam, you can use a movie "clap" method. Simply strum the strings in the begginning of the video and then you have a sync point. -------------------- - Ivan's Video Chat Lesson Notes HERE

Quickcam 9000 or the Sphere AF are great! As long as you turn off all the automatic lightning options and such (as that will drastically improve your frame-rate).

From what I've read from the people who write the Linux Drivers for those Logitech Webcams is that they are horrible. That's a nice example: http://linux-uvc.berlios.de/#footnote-1 a firmware bug that makes timing unstable. I would probably either buy a cheap webcam like the logitech E3500 or a proper video camera.

Generally for videos you may want to think about a used miniDV camcorder as well...They transfer files via firewire to PC....Any camcorder will give you much better results then webcams...and if you search you can find some cheap ones (older models - doesn't matter!)..
Regarding a webcam , Quickcam 9000 should be a pretty good solution. This post has been edited by Bogdan Radovic: Mar 3 2009, 08:02 PM -------------------- For GMC support please email support (at) guitarmasterclass.net

Firewire is not the same as USB. Most DV camcorders use that connection so check that you have it if you choose to go that route!. Hard drive cams on the other hand usually work with USB 2.
