QUICK LICKS #23 "QUASIPEGGIOS"

INTRO:

This lick is a funky one. It's got a sort of box shape to it. It's roughly based on the A Minor Scale which is one of the scales I'm playing in this solo which is over top of the GABE COLLAB (CLICK HERE FOR LINK TO JOIN THE COLLAB!).
The lick is kinda like an Arpeggio, but kinda like a box pattern. You can pick it any way that feels comfy as the picking isn't really the point. The point is to be able to play this bit over the backing and make it sound musical. You can also go up an octave and play it, which I also do in the vid demo. It's a very handy lick that fits well with nearly anything and it's a great way to work on your string skipping and your hand synch/picking and lastly your precision/Speed.

Here is the tablature. Make sure you use VIBRATO where it's notated and HOLD the notes where it's indicated. If you need a reference, just watch the video again and play it just like that. Try not to use single finger vibrato on this one as it sounds way to small imho. Dig in and give it some real vibrato

As always, start SLOW, don't worry about playing this fast. Just focus on playing it CLEAN Speed is a byproduct of precision. Just like previous quick licks, this lick works as a warmup, practice and solo lick. Don't over stress on getting it just right, or fast enough. This is just about learning the lick. Once you have it you can start it anywhere on the neck to play it in any key.

*NOTE:
Bit of a stretch here so use your PINKY when playing it as writeen in the tablature.

BACKGROUND / COMMENTS
As mentioned, this is from the GABE COLLAB called "PEARL JAM" as it's based on a Pearl Jam type backing that Gabe created. It's great fun to solo over. If you have not joined in, go join! Here is the link again.

NICE!!! Look at that hand stretch!!! Using the PINKY POWER to full effect. I know this was not an easy shape to play but you make it look easy to be sure. I knew it was possible!!! I hope your example inspires other folks to give it a shot smile.gif You really nailed it. Multi Picking to boot!! Technique is on point here, muting is spot on, strikes are solid and even, playing is smooth and not rushed or dragging, all around you just nailed the living crap out of it. Very well played. In other words, you just,...

LEVELED UP!!!!!! Again!!!

Two Words. KILLED IT!!! This one requires a great deal of dexterity. You have to use the PINKY! The shape is built to be nearly impossible to not use the pinky. The point of this is to get you used to "Sticking the landing" with the weakest finger and to help build up the power in PINKY! It needs all the help it can get. We are all cursed with this runt of the litter finger and we have to work hard to get it up to par with it's brothers.

Also, your hand synch is perfect. Not one strike out of place. Also your left hand precision is quite good. I would have been happy with the first pass you made at the lick, I was really impressed when you kept ramping it up! This is NOT and easy lick and you really made it look simple! So far there is nothing I've been able to throw at you that seems to really stress your skills! I'm going to have to make some tougher Quick Licks!!! You just..

LEVELED UP!!!

NAILED IT!!!!! This is a great lick to help work on ones Stretch and on ones pinky power as well. It requires string traverse and you have to stick the landing with the pinky on several strings. Miss one note, and you get to start over. But you didn't miss any!!! Nice. Also, this lick works as a rythm lick. Just move it up two frets, then up two frets again and repeat and it's a backing track rythm!! It's got a prog vibe when used as a rythm guitar piece. Also, makes a fun warm up smile.gif Keep moving it up the neck and see how your stamina holds up!!

Take 1 for scrutiny Todd,

Sorry, but the gremlins crept in right at the end. It happens when I leave my web browser open but what is odd with this one is it isn't all the way through the recording. Weird huh.gif

I see what you mean!! It's ok though, I can hear the bit and see your hands so it's fine smile.gif You've got this one down! It's a very good way to work on your stretch and on your traverse picking. It also works as a lead lick. Also works as a backing now that I think of it, just shift in a whole step, whole step, whole step pattern and bam. Instant backing track. Good picking, good muting, synch is spot on. Bingo!! You just...

I LOVE these shapes. I based an entire solo around this shape actually. It works as a lead and as a rythm. Very fun to work with. You've got it! Move them around and see if they inspire any new riffs!
The solo is also a bit of a rythm. Can you hear the quick lick?
