This one isn't as weird as it may sound... The question is if you have ever played licks on the guitar because they sound "out" and wrong? As illustrated in today's awesome lesson by Juan - this is a very common fusion concept - but since we have a lot of rock guys here I thought it would be a relevant question!

Great question again, Kris ! Yes I definitely think 'outside' tones are a powerful and necessary tool in music. Although I'm not a jazz or fusion guy, I really admire that style and I really love the playing of someone like Chris Poland.. I wish I knew what he was doing so I could copy it !!! blink.gif

I've listened to a lot of Free Jazz over the years along with be-bop and avant garde so I'm used to hearing 'outside' playing.

I'd suggest that no individual note is wrong it's how that point in the musical impro progresses and with what we are accustomed to hearing and with how we expect it to go.

Outside notes are kool. I would also say something similar to Tony - I don't feel there are wrong notes in music, as long as they have proper function.

The trouble with me is that I can't remember outside sounds. I like to hear something recognizeable; something pleasing to the [my] ear. wink.gif
