Quick Licks # 104 - Open String Strike Once Hammer Twice (pinky Power) Options

QUICK LICKS 104

In this QUICK LICK, we start with an open string strike and then hammer on the next two notes. So it's grouped in 3 note chunks. Use your pinky if at all possible. The pinky can always use a bit of work Keep it even and smooth. Try to keep an equal amount of time in between each note. Use a light palm mute to prevent string noise. This lick works on every string so you can play it on any string you like for the video! You can play it on all the strings if you want. It's a great warm up lick and a great way to work the PINKY!!!

Bingo! Well done there. This one can feel a bit strange since it does a hammer on toward the bridge instead of a pull off toward the nut. I wrote it this way on purpose believe it or not so that it would give folks a chance to play something that sorta feels wrong. Also, the single pick strike has to be strong enough for 3 notes instead of one. None of which gave you any problems. This one is sorted!

Most of you here know that I don't really play this style (I'm doing it on a 335) but I liked the concept of this lick. Kinda the reverse of what a lot of players do (pulling off) and definitely way out of my wheelhouse. Technique wise it took me a good three days of around a 1/2 hour focus during each practice session. Mostly to get the triplets even and percussive sounding. Todd really has the 'attack' down. It sounds like a nail gun. The attack is everything.
My pinky finger is strong - that was no problem but where I felt it, was in the top of my hand.
This is a great, general hand strengthening exercise ...

Great to see you in here Ken. Todd isn't so strict in here as in the Bootcamp. Bootcamp has to be very precise whereas Quick Licks is more casual.

You're already an awesome pro guitarist but why don't you work your way through the whole set? I think if you tell us mere mortals that it took you three days of half hour focus we might not be so hard on ourselves for taking so long to get things to an acceptable level and think that maybe we aren't so bad

Thanks Ken for jumping in on QUICK LICKS!! This one is tricky as it's backwards of what one would normally play. Hammering on toward the bridge instead of pulling off toward the nut. That's what makes this one a bit tricky and great for hand strength as you mentioned. You did a KILLER job of playing it and you did it at speed!!! I'm seriously impressed you were able to get this lick down as quickly as you did and play just like the demo vid. Even more impressive is that you are doing it on a 335! Low gain pups, not a shred neck for sure, and yet you pull it off with style. Gotta say well done. Also, I see you are using the SECRET SAUCE Von Hotch Pick! I love those things. They are the UNICORN of guitar picks. Almost mythical at this point as they are not being made anymore.

In short you FREAKING KRUSHED IT!!!!

So here are some important things to remember regarding my take ...

1) I've been playing guitar for 40 years and during that 40 years there were periods where I did work on chops and technique a lot.
2) I studied classical guitar in college. My private teacher made me audibly knock each finger on the fingerboard (while muting all the strings with my right hand) and he stressed that the pinky must be able to knock just as loudly as the middle (2nd) finger.
3) I hadn't done any of that in a long time but it all came back to me once I started doing Todd's lick.
4) Yeah, I got it up to tempo but it's not as percussive and machine like as when Todd plays it.
5) My ES-335 actually has a slim neck with a 12" radius (early 60s style) and it's kinda shreddy (as those guitars go), though I do have .011s on it. And the bridge pkup is pretty rock and roll (classic 57).

Anyway, it was fun and it definitely made me realize that I need to shed some technique stuff again.

As PHILL66 mentioned in his post, it does give all the players a ray of hope when it takes a seasoned vet a few days to get something down. I'm playing these licks after working on this style of play for many many years. So it can be daunting for players still working through it. Your example of working it up is perfect. I really hope it inspires other players to hop in!!!

You really did KRUSH it. Playing for 40 years certainly does give you a pinch of an advantage The teacher making you get the pinky up to snuff was spot on imho. All the fingers have to have the same power or playing can sound very uneven. A drill like this is designed to force the hand to play every note with the same amount of pressure and keep it very tight in terms of timing while doing it essentially backwards from what is normal.
I've worked on my palm mute technique for years and years. Along with finger power, it lets me pick every third note and still have it sound almost like i'm picking every note since I'm hitting it so hard with the fingers. Getting that machine like, "Nail Gun" (laughed out loud when I read that comment, its' spot on) type of sound is something I always wanted to do every since hearing it from players like NUNO back in the day.

I'm really glad you got something out of this and i hope to see you again here in land of SHRED!!!
