GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ I Quit!

Posted by: skennington Sep 12 2009, 05:11 PM

Smoking that is and it's killing me at the moment so I'm doing something else by writing this to get my mind off of it.. laugh.gif Just had lunch and anyone who smokes knows how that "after meal" smoke is. wink.gif

I've been using sunflower seeds to curve my cravings and it has helped. I wanted to do this on my on without any prescription help and I'm determined to make it. smile.gif

After smoking for near 20 years now, I feel it's time and I certainly don't ever want my kids to start. I slowly backed myself off over the last week until yesterday...

9-11-09 completely quit and for good! (9-11) For Courage
\Wish Me Luck/

Be strong man! You can do it.

Posted by: Eat-Sleep-andJam Sep 12 2009, 05:14 PM

Awesome Skenny, Wish you the best of luck !

I had problems with that for awhile. And I am only ( 16!)

Anyways, once I finally quit, you do feel like your one step ahead of the game.

The game being all the people still smoking! And you might want to also try Gum!

I wish you all luck in the world !

I'm in almost the exact same boat, 20 (or 21 now?) years of smoking and I've been desperately wanting the courage and willpower to quit for the last ... I dunno, like 5 years or more. I'm so tired of doing it.

Maybe I'll join you in quitting today, but I'm not doing it without patches. I totally lose my mind when I've tried it without those at least.

Strong my brave friend, it will happen eventually smile.gif

Posted by: Staffy Sep 12 2009, 05:23 PM

Good luck!!!! It can be done! I have quitted everything else: whiskey, women, late nights - you name it, but smoking is the last outpost of sin (except for coffee) that I have. I dont dare to quit, cause then I'm probobly going to be a even more worse nutcake than I already am..... hmmm, but maybe if I'm starting with women again.....

Posted by: skennington Sep 12 2009, 05:24 PM

Thanks guys! @ Jafo, do it man, I know we will feel better and not to mention, save a helluva lot of money! biggrin.gif

Ciggs are $5.00/pack here in North Carolina.

1 pack a day over a year...365 X 5.00 = $1825.00 ohmy.gif Another great reason to quit! smile.gif

I see no reason for you quiting women lol

Way to go!! Best of luck to you, when I quit I kept a pack of Marlboro with one single fag left in it at home. That way in case I failed I wouldn't tear myself apart over getting in the car late at night and driving to the store for just one lousy pack of cigarettes since that'd be a huge failure compared to just smoking the last one in the house. Would be easier on my mind I thought smile.gif

Good luck mate! smile.gif

This is one of the reasons I've been less willing to quit since I moved out of a city and into a suburb; I'm terrified of driving in the state that I get to. I seriously become a rampaging monster if I lose it and there are simply no places that I can walk to from here. It's not just a question of laziness or distance, there's multi-lane highways and no sidewalks or crossable intersections for miles.

Thanks Micke and I have done the same thing. I have a pack in the garage with a couple left in it just in case. Seems my mind is more at ease knowing there is a "parachute" their in case I "fall" laugh.gif

That's great mate smile.gif
Hopefully you'll never smoke again in your life!

Someday it's my turn to post a thread like this.. just not yet I'm afraid sad.gif

Posted by: Berglmir Sep 12 2009, 11:15 PM

Well all the best of luck to you and everybody else trying to get rid of this addiction.
My story:
I have been smoking pipes only for about 19 years (I started when I was 19!) - thought it looks cooler, smells nicer, tastes better and isn´t so dangerous as fags.
WELL - the first shock came about 2 years ago as friends had to tell me that I started to inhalate the pipesmoke (which is far more stronger than cigarette smoke) - I would not have noticed. sad.gif

I tried to get rid of smoking - but at first I really did not WANT to (really thought I´m giving up one of lifes pleasures), then I started to cut down on the amount of tobacco and also tried do get back to just puffing - to no avail.

Tomorrow it will be exactly one year ago that something strange but wonderful happened:
I just prepared yet another pipe, put in in my mouth, lightened it and took one or two puffs as I realized: it does not taste good anymore! I put the pipe down.....and never have picked up one again since then.
As addicted I really was - I got cured from the NEED in a matter of seconds. I would like to tell you that it was my sheer amount of willpower but that would be a lie - it just happened to me and I´m very grateful for that and my deepest respect to anyone who can pull this of!!

Luck!

I don't smoke but my parents used to for long time. They stopped couple of years ago because they realized how bad effect they have on their health. Very glad you decided to quit smoking, stay strong and try to drink water and exercise whenever you can. smile.gif

Posted by: Gary Sep 12 2009, 11:39 PM

Do it bro..
You not only do not want your kids to start.. you want to be there for them.

We all think that bad stuff happens to others but the negative effects of smoking can strike anyone. I started in my early teens and then quit when I turned 20. My sister who is two years older kept on smoking..at 43 she was diagnosed with cancer of the throat.. from smoking. She has had surgery, radiation and chemo to treat the cancer. It has been three years and she is doing well, thank god.

My niece was in second grade at the time my sis was diagnosed. I can tell you first hand that it's a very scary position to be in...realizing there is a decent chance you will be leaving your kid alone over some smokes.

I posted this not to try and scare or condem those that smoke..hell I did it for quite a few years. Just want to get the message out that bad things really do happen to good people, and that it's incredibly sad when the event is preventable.

Wow, I can't thank you guys enough for the stories and inspiration. smile.gif The times I have tried to quit in the past, I was thinking like Berglmir, I thought I was giving up a pleasure. blink.gif

It's different now and I really want to quit for my family and myself. I shall overcome! cool.gif

I don't understand cigarettes. I am a social smoker on occasion, but I've never bought a pack and I don't even really get anything out of it, except for the feeling of blowing out the smoke, which reminds me of other activities. I guess I'm asking, those of you who do or have smoked, what benefit do you get from it? I've heard it calms people down, maybe so, but I don't feel it (I'm a very calm, laid back person by nature anyway). Then again, I don't feel extra energy drinking caffeine either, maybe I'm a freak!

There are no benefits from it man, just a habit tricking your brain into thinking there is.

Just like anything else that we get addicted to, we will find an excuse to keep doing it no matter the cost to our health.

Until one really wants to quit, it's seems impossible.

Same to me. I am a social smoker as well. It's good to just chill with friends and smoking cigs and drinking. It's a perfect summer scenery (I am of legal age to do both btw). For a few years, I have been smoking socially, and never once had a craving of it other than something to do at parties. Guess I'm just immune to it, or maybe I can pretty much control what I want to do, or don't want to do.

Posted by: Bondy Sep 13 2009, 02:13 AM

Good look on quitting the cigs Skenny smile.gif

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic Sep 13 2009, 02:41 AM

I need to do this urgently, I quit once for a year, then got back. It's bad for the health definitely, I would never recommend anyone to start or continue smoking, it's hard to quit.

Posted by: shrednbuttah Sep 13 2009, 03:32 AM

Hard habit to quit... no positive way of looking at it, drain on money, health ect. I'm young and I smoked for about 14 months only (tried to quit and had 2-3 relapses) so I feel your struggle! Good luck!

I'm on the same situation. Smoked for 20 years I quit smoking July 23rd no patches no nothing. Now that I feel much better my mind plays me tricks like I could smoke again because of the way I feel.
Money is not an issue when you are a smoker the real problem is how to wash 20 years of habit out of your brain.
It looks like I gave up smoking yesterday I guess our bodies will remember the feeling forever.

Congrats Kapto, stay the course man, 2 months in is great! smile.gif I agree that 20 years of a bad habit is going to be hell to break but the way I see it, 21 years will be even worse. The time for me is now! cool.gif

I wish you the best of luck. i am 34 and i have been smoking since i was twelve and ever since my son was born six years ago i have tried to give up every year but in the end just started smoking more. now i really am statring to get guilt trips from the kids and smoking in the UK costs a fortune (about £6 for 20).

add to this the fact that my mother died back in may at the age of 59 of a massive heart attack that was directly related to her being a heavy smoker. ironically she gave up the year before.

so i will be posting my own giving up thread, but as always i keep finding some excuse to put off giving up.

stay strong, and let me know how those seeds work.

Posted by: skennington Sep 16 2009, 01:50 AM

Thanks Dusty, your story is very similar to mine. I started when I was 16 (now 36) and have kids as well. Your time will come man and when you want to quit bad enough, you will. That's where I'm at now. It took me really, really wanting to quit to take the leap. smile.gif

Cravings have pretty much gone but there's still that urge every now and again, guess that will pass with time too. I encourage any of you who wants to quit to just go for it, you only have the rest of your life to consider. wink.gif

After meals and before getting down to do work (like real day-job work) are tough. The after-meal craving is pretty quick to pass, thankfully. The "instead of getting started at work" craving has been a lot harder to really truly defeat; I find myself just waiting to feel better before I do anything.

Guess how well that's working? Yeah, it isn't.
