Smoking that is and it's killing me at the moment so I'm doing something else by writing this to get my mind off of it.. Just had lunch and anyone who smokes knows how that "after meal" smoke is.
I've been using sunflower seeds to curve my cravings and it has helped. I wanted to do this on my on without any prescription help and I'm determined to make it.
After smoking for near 20 years now, I feel it's time and I certainly don't ever want my kids to start. I slowly backed myself off over the last week until yesterday...
9-11-09 completely quit and for good! (9-11) For Courage
\Wish Me Luck/
Steve
Be strong man! You can do it.
Awesome Skenny, Wish you the best of luck !
I had problems with that for awhile. And I am only ( 16!)
Anyways, once I finally quit, you do feel like your one step ahead of the game.
The game being all the people still smoking! And you might want to also try Gum!
I wish you all luck in the world !
-John
I'm in almost the exact same boat, 20 (or 21 now?) years of smoking and I've been desperately wanting the courage and willpower to quit for the last ... I dunno, like 5 years or more. I'm so tired of doing it.
Maybe I'll join you in quitting today, but I'm not doing it without patches. I totally lose my mind when I've tried it without those at least.
Strong my brave friend, it will happen eventually
Good luck!!!! It can be done! I have quitted everything else: whiskey, women, late nights - you name it, but smoking is the last outpost of sin (except for coffee) that I have. I dont dare to quit, cause then I'm probobly going to be a even more worse nutcake than I already am..... hmmm, but maybe if I'm starting with women again.....
Thanks guys! @ Jafo, do it man, I know we will feel better and not to mention, save a helluva lot of money!
Ciggs are $5.00/pack here in North Carolina.
1 pack a day over a year...365 X 5.00 = $1825.00 Another great reason to quit!
Way to go!! Best of luck to you, when I quit I kept a pack of Marlboro with one single fag left in it at home. That way in case I failed I wouldn't tear myself apart over getting in the car late at night and driving to the store for just one lousy pack of cigarettes since that'd be a huge failure compared to just smoking the last one in the house. Would be easier on my mind I thought
Good luck mate!
Good decision Steve, be strong & think of the gear you'll get with the money you'll save too
Man, I know how tough that is!
Be strong man, and don't give up!
Stay strong!
nice man, i havent bought a pack in awhile so im feeling alrgiht, but i want one sooo bad right now.... bad day haha
from what ive heard, the physical addiction only last three days and the rest is mental....if you can learn to meditate or just clear your mind i guarantee you will quit...
That's great mate
Hopefully you'll never smoke again in your life!
Someday it's my turn to post a thread like this.. just not yet I'm afraid
Well all the best of luck to you and everybody else trying to get rid of this addiction.
My story:
I have been smoking pipes only for about 19 years (I started when I was 19!) - thought it looks cooler, smells nicer, tastes better and isn´t so dangerous as fags.
WELL - the first shock came about 2 years ago as friends had to tell me that I started to inhalate the pipesmoke (which is far more stronger than cigarette smoke) - I would not have noticed.
I tried to get rid of smoking - but at first I really did not WANT to (really thought I´m giving up one of lifes pleasures), then I started to cut down on the amount of tobacco and also tried do get back to just puffing - to no avail.
Tomorrow it will be exactly one year ago that something strange but wonderful happened:
I just prepared yet another pipe, put in in my mouth, lightened it and took one or two puffs as I realized: it does not taste good anymore! I put the pipe down.....and never have picked up one again since then.
As addicted I really was - I got cured from the NEED in a matter of seconds. I would like to tell you that it was my sheer amount of willpower but that would be a lie - it just happened to me and I´m very grateful for that and my deepest respect to anyone who can pull this of!!
Luck!
Good luck Steve!
I don't smoke but my parents used to for long time. They stopped couple of years ago because they realized how bad effect they have on their health. Very glad you decided to quit smoking, stay strong and try to drink water and exercise whenever you can.
Do it bro..
You not only do not want your kids to start.. you want to be there for them.
We all think that bad stuff happens to others but the negative effects of smoking can strike anyone. I started in my early teens and then quit when I turned 20. My sister who is two years older kept on smoking..at 43 she was diagnosed with cancer of the throat.. from smoking. She has had surgery, radiation and chemo to treat the cancer. It has been three years and she is doing well, thank god.
My niece was in second grade at the time my sis was diagnosed. I can tell you first hand that it's a very scary position to be in...realizing there is a decent chance you will be leaving your kid alone over some smokes.
I posted this not to try and scare or condem those that smoke..hell I did it for quite a few years. Just want to get the message out that bad things really do happen to good people, and that it's incredibly sad when the event is preventable.
Gary
Wow, I can't thank you guys enough for the stories and inspiration. The times I have tried to quit in the past, I was thinking like Berglmir, I thought I was giving up a pleasure.
It's different now and I really want to quit for my family and myself. I shall overcome!
/Steve
I don't understand cigarettes. I am a social smoker on occasion, but I've never bought a pack and I don't even really get anything out of it, except for the feeling of blowing out the smoke, which reminds me of other activities. I guess I'm asking, those of you who do or have smoked, what benefit do you get from it? I've heard it calms people down, maybe so, but I don't feel it (I'm a very calm, laid back person by nature anyway). Then again, I don't feel extra energy drinking caffeine either, maybe I'm a freak!
Good look on quitting the cigs Skenny
I need to do this urgently, I quit once for a year, then got back. It's bad for the health definitely, I would never recommend anyone to start or continue smoking, it's hard to quit.
Hard habit to quit... no positive way of looking at it, drain on money, health ect. I'm young and I smoked for about 14 months only (tried to quit and had 2-3 relapses) so I feel your struggle! Good luck!
I am not even trying to stop but I am jealous on people that can do it Stay strong
Oops, I thought this was to do with GMC.. Was scared.
Well, Good Luck for this. Its pretty hard thing to do. I had my history.
It takes time and courage, but it can be done - Best of luck Steve!
Good luck
Good luck Steve!!
I have tried and failed a couple of times and I've been on them over 30 years now!!!
Having said that, the weird thing is, I don't smoke in the House and sometimes go days without one and from 3 packs a day I'm now smoking less than a pack a day!
yeah,good luck Steve !!
1-2 pack a day here...yes,yes i know
Best of luck Steve.
Good luck to everyone trying!
Luckily, I have a good motivator not to begin in the first place: My stepdads cough, who has been smoking since he was 14 (he's 53).
Good luck man !
I hope you can pull it off, smoking is one of the worser habits a man can have.
Its a really good decision Steve ! I wish you all the luck! I've seen many people "lose their health" to smoking...Its a really bad habit and not rewarding one ... Good luck!
This site is useful for those that want to quit cold turkey and even for those that use other methods:

Thanks again guys for the support, 5 days in now without nicotine. I've been a bit on the edge the last few days but things are getting better. I just keep telling myself not to give up and I CAN do this..
Good luck !
I'm on the same situation. Smoked for 20 years I quit smoking July 23rd no patches no nothing. Now that I feel much better my mind plays me tricks like I could smoke again because of the way I feel.
Money is not an issue when you are a smoker the real problem is how to wash 20 years of habit out of your brain.
It looks like I gave up smoking yesterday I guess our bodies will remember the feeling forever.
Be strong !
It is never too late to make a good change in your life!
If this lady stopped smoking after 95 years , anyone can! (even though she did it for the wrong reasons)
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1212928/Im-giving-cigarettes--95-years.html
Hold on. You can do it. Good luck
very wise decision btw
I used to go swiming to cool down
Then I began to run
Then I joined GMC
There is only one conclusion :
YES WE CAN !!
good luck !
I wish you the best of luck. i am 34 and i have been smoking since i was twelve and ever since my son was born six years ago i have tried to give up every year but in the end just started smoking more. now i really am statring to get guilt trips from the kids and smoking in the UK costs a fortune (about £6 for 20).
add to this the fact that my mother died back in may at the age of 59 of a massive heart attack that was directly related to her being a heavy smoker. ironically she gave up the year before.
so i will be posting my own giving up thread, but as always i keep finding some excuse to put off giving up.
stay strong, and let me know how those seeds work.
Thanks Dusty, your story is very similar to mine. I started when I was 16 (now 36) and have kids as well. Your time will come man and when you want to quit bad enough, you will. That's where I'm at now. It took me really, really wanting to quit to take the leap.
You can do it, good luck man!
On the wagon as of yesterday, around noon. Patches & chewing gum at the ready, awaiting psychotic episodes.
I like the way this thread is going! You all have my support
Awesome Jafo! Today will make 6 days for me and I can tell you, the urge is fallen off more and more each day. Just hang in there man, we can do this!
Well, it's been a month already and I'm still smoke free. Can't say that I have been the most pleasurable person to be around but hey, still smoke free!
Cravings have pretty much gone but there's still that urge every now and again, guess that will pass with time too. I encourage any of you who wants to quit to just go for it, you only have the rest of your life to consider.
Well done Skenny kicking those cancer sticks. keep it up mate
Nice stop Skenny !
Congrats my friend!!!
smoke so much that you puke works at every one! youll never smoke again
Yeah, a year and half ago..
But I still have a cigar every once and a while...
Bad David, Bad!!!!!
Thanks man! :-)
I'm glad you're doing so good too!
2 months today, woohoo!
this is my 5th day without a cigar... i'm feeling it a little..
after eating... at like 11pm ...
but i feel better, started to exercise and to eat healthy too
After meals and before getting down to do work (like real day-job work) are tough. The after-meal craving is pretty quick to pass, thankfully. The "instead of getting started at work" craving has been a lot harder to really truly defeat; I find myself just waiting to feel better before I do anything.
Guess how well that's working? Yeah, it isn't.
Hmm, I will have to think about quitting the smokes as well. I already quite some year or two ago, but they sneaked up on me once again
Congrats, Steve! Keep it like this!
Fortunately, I never tried a cig and I don´t get the urge to try.
let's say it's a dark worm place .
i will!
Good luck, any smoker should quit!
I smoked for 5 years, and quit... Haven't smoked in a month now, and feeling much better in every way...
Here's a tip that I used in the beginning. Whenever you feel like smoking, stick a lollipop in your mouth, or something to jew on, like a matchstick helped me...
Stay strong mate, you can do it
