Hello PosterBoy!
I am so happy that you have decided to join my program!
A few questions before we will start!
-What are your goals?
-What is your weakness?
-What is your strongest point?
-Your favorite guitar players?
I am looking forward to start working with you!
You have also mentioned that Jazz/Fusion isn't your thing so that means you would like to do a different style or actually interested in giving them a try?

Posted by: PosterBoy Jul 10 2012, 08:44 PM

My Goals with you will be to get a really good knowledge of harmony and applying it to interesting compositions, mainly looking at the chord side of things but things like how chord choices can change the feel of a melody line.

Whilst I say I don't like Jazz I do like Ted Greene's chord melody, I think it's facinating to watch and listen to.

I would like to use what I learn in music that wouldn't be seen as strictly Jazz or fusion, I'm more of a fan of Rock, Punk and Folk, but if it's needed to help achieve my goal I'll head that way. I do love some of the Jazzy gospel stuff I've come across and soul stuff.

Weaknesses are technique and speed, maybe phrasing

Strengths

Fingerpicking
Pretty good ear training
Melodic sense

Players I like are (tough question this)

Andy Timmons
Paul Gilbert
Ludovico Einaudi (pianist/Composer)
Tom Bukovac
Phil X
Pete Thorn
Paul Jackson Jr

Practice it at a very slow tempo with a metronome!
You will se results very fast! In a few days we will start getting into improvisation the exercise won't be strictly jazz or fusion I will come up with something cool!
Let me know if you have any questions or need help!

Just getting the piece flowing, should have a take for you in the next couple days.

The 8th notes to triplets is the hardest bit, I keep questioning my timing even when I'm on the beat.

Again it's the transition to triplets that is making me stumble. But I'm getting there

oh and let's add Nuno and Richie Kotzen to my list of favourite players (how did I miss them out!!)

I will be explaining a new theory subject once a week or every other week and will be giving assignments based on it!
Theory questions (will help me to get a better idea where to start! )

- Harmonize G major scale
- Build A7 chord
- Write ii - V - I chord progression starting with Cmi7
- D mi7 - Bb - Gmi - F What key this chord progression in?
Looking forward to hear your recording! smile.gif

Harmonise G major scale

G major (G B D )
A minor (A C E )
B minor (B D F# )
C major (C E G )
D major (D F# A )
E minor (E G B )
F#mb5 (F# A C )

Build an A7 Chord

What is the tempo in BPM?

Posted by: PosterBoy Aug 14 2012, 08:36 PM

Alex what do you mean? the tempo of my track? That I'm not sure I didn't play to a click so it's a little rubato (I had to look that word up!)

If you can replay it using a click would be great! This way it will be easier to line up everything and make drums and bass sound in the "pocket"

Posted by: PosterBoy Aug 15 2012, 06:28 PM

Ok I'll get that done, I strummed it out and the tempo feels right at about 68 bpm

Man it's a beautiful song!!! I like it so much!
Now when you have recorded it with a click I need a few things:
- Take of the click (you can leave countdown if you want)
- Reupload the track without a click and make it downloadable
- What chords are you using?
- What is the tempo

It will be a very very nice tune and we will have so much fun working and analyzing it! smile.gif
I am looking forward to finish the backing track! smile.gif

The track is at 65 bpm

The Chords would be (I think)

A/G#7/C#m/D6b5
A/Am/G#m/C#m
Amaj7/Am/Gsus4/G# dim
A/G#7/C#m/C#7
A/Am/E2

For now let's analyze the chord progression and talk about possible scales you can play over it!
Let's start with a first line
A/G#7/C#m/D6b5

I would like you to tell me what would be your scales choice?

Posted by: PosterBoy Aug 22 2012, 06:20 AM

A/G#7/C#m/D6b5

A Maj or Maj Pent
G# Mix
C# minor Pent
D maj Pent (but swap the 5th for b5)

Ok I'm correcting this as it's wrong. I was just in bed thinking over the piece

The piece is in A Lydian not E maj (until we resolve on the E maj at the end)

A/G#7/C#m/D6b5

This is off the top of my head purely based on the chord tones

A Lydian or A Maj Pent
G#Mix Not sure about this one as the G#7 is a parallel Major sub from Gm7
C# Aeolian or C# minor Pent
E Mixolydian (or a chromatic run as we have 4 consecutive tones it might just work!)
Choosing E Mix as the D6b5 is a tritone sup for the Dominant chord (E7) we have the D and G# as the tritone, D6b5 chord could be also named E9add11 no root or Eadd9add11/D

Posted by: PosterBoy Aug 23 2012, 10:57 AM

Ok so I've done some research and over the G#7 it looks (notes contained in it )and sounds like G# Phrygian Dominant works

Posted by: Alex Feather Aug 24 2012, 05:04 AM

Good choices of the scales! I have a questions:

1) G#Mix Not sure about this one as the G#7 is a parallel Major sub from Gm7

- Not sure what you meant?

2) Also how did you come up with a phrygian dominant?

Posted by: PosterBoy Aug 24 2012, 09:04 AM

The Phrygian Dominant over the G#7 was an interesting little journey for me.

I made a quick vamp of the G#7 and started to noddle around, I found that the phrygian mode was quite close, but obviously it's a minor mode so it wouldn't fit completely, it didn't have the c natural I needed for the G#7, when I added that note to the scale I heard a harmonic minor sound so I played with that, and it came out as the C# harmonic minor, I remembered from discussions about Sweet Child Of Mine that the 5 mode of the Harmonic Minor was the Phrygian Dominant, so I checked and was correct.

I did some more vamps using the A - G#7 to make sure it would fit in context and it did

Interesting! smile.gif I like the way you are thinking! Why didn't you pick G# mixolydian? Since it is a 7th chord

Posted by: PosterBoy Aug 26 2012, 06:49 AM

I didn't pick G# Mix because although it's a 7th chord it wasn't the V chord (which I'd normally associate with the mixolydian mode),playing it didn't work for me the F and Bb in the mode clashed with the progression and the scale didn't help get to the C#m.

As with all my ideas on theory I test them out on guitar to make sure it sounds good to me.

Alex could you post the backing without my original guitar chord melody track, I find it quite tough to come up with ideas with that there, unless you purposely want me to compose a solo that works around the melody, in which case I'll have to battle on!

I'm really struggling with this chord sequence Alex, it's so different from the diatonic type 4 chord stuff I usually have to play over (and I can't even blame you, seeing as I came up with it!)

I gave up on it for a while, I will try and come up with something, even if I'm not happy with it so you have something to critique and give advice and help with.

Hi I just wanted to follow up and check on you? How is everything going? Do you have any troubles with the chords?

Posted by: PosterBoy Oct 31 2012, 08:01 AM

Alex can we move towards Chord Melody type stuff, like Ted Greene and Joe Pass.

I have both of Ted Greene's books Chord Chemistry and Modern Chord Progressions, but they aren't something I've been able to make much use of by myself.

Maybe take a contemporary song and looking at making it instrumental with some interesting chord subs, re harmonising etc and going over the theory of it.

That's definitely where my interest in the more 'jazz' sounding stuff is rather than single line soloing or fusion etc

What happened to the track we were working on? Unfortunately I can't teach you copyrighted material What we can do is take a famous Jazz standard and use the chord progression only you can write your own melody and improvise over it
What do you think?

Posted by: PosterBoy Oct 31 2012, 09:58 AM

I'm still working on it, I'll record where I'm at tomorrow (I have a day off),

A/G#7/C#m/D6b5
A/Am/G#m/C#m
Amaj7/Am/Gsus4/G# dim I think it's here I have problems, around the Gsus4 part, I'll try some arpeggio type thing there maybe
A/G#7/C#m/C#7
A/Am/E2

but I would like to go towards chord melody style afterwards rather than improv, I understand about the copywrited material issue, Is something like 'The Way You Look Tonight' a standard that we could take the melody, work it into a basic chord melody piece and then have fun with substitutions and re harmonising?

Let me know!

Posted by: PosterBoy Nov 20 2012, 09:19 PM

Wonders will never cease, I actually composed and recorded my solo.

I had to add an additional rhythm track with strummed chords to help make sense of the changes.

It's rather heavily based around the C#m Pentatonic shape with additional notes thrown in, and the phrasing is a little dull

Would be awesome if you can continue the solo! I used a lot of chord tones and was playing over the changes!
Have you heard about chord tones?

Alex

One of your video chats on Joe Pass arpeggios and also this mentoring thread, put an idea in my mind for a theory based project.

Seeing as I have Neck Diagrams, I thought I'd put it into good use and create a Triads document.

I think I need your input as I want it too be a useful tool for me and everyone here at GMC

I'm going to choose a key (probably C major)

Show the triads (and inversions) on string sets 123, 234, 345, 456

Then add superimposed triads to them to make extended chords

I guess the next step would adding non diatonic triads to get other extended chords b5 etc

To make it more useful, rather than just a reference document to included useful exercises to help, get it under the fingers, on the fretboard and from the mind to the ear.

Would you be interested in helping me with this, we could use it as the basis of my mentoring, I'm guessing I'll learn a lot compiling it.

The only thing is we will have to finish everything before the end of December because my mentoring program will be closed from January 1st

Ah ok well if I outline each section rather than go into detail, and also get you to make sure I get the chord names and intervals. I can do the rest.

I started mapping out the triad's as pairs and naming them but got stuck after the basic ones were done, so I found this

Can you check it's correct

For the Key of C

I
C E G + D F A = D F A C E G = ii-m11 = Dm11
C E G + E G B = C E G B = I-M7 = CM7
C E G + F A C = F A C E G = IV-M9 = FM9
C E G + G B D = C E G B D = I-M9 = CM9
C E G + A C E = A C E G = vi-m7 = Am7
C E G + B D F = C D E F G B = I-M11 = CM11

ii

D F A + E G B = E G B D F A = iii-m11 = Em11

B D F + G B D = G B D F = V-7 = G7
B D F + A C E = B D F A C E = vii-m11/b5 = Bm11/b5

Basic Outline

Show the 7 triads in note name

Show the 3 shapes for the major triad, the minor triad and Dim triad for string set 654

Use G major key (it's got nice locations on the fretboard)

Show triads on fretboard for each inversion

Give exercise for G major inversions with metronome
Give exercise for D minor inversions with metronome
Give exercise for F#dim inversions with metronome

Give triad exercises up and down diatonic scale.

Do the same for 543, 432, 321 string sets

Give chord progression exercises to practice linking inversions across string sets and to make something musical

Superimposing Triads

Explanation and showing the examples

Show examples on fretboard of triads linked together on same string set
Show examples on fretboard of triads linked together on adjacent string sets

Exercises for using these over chord progressions

If you can give any help with effective exercises to drill and for good progressions to practice the triads and arpeggios over, I'd appreciate it.

If you think I've missed anything, or the order I've put things in isn't the most logical for learning also let me know, I'd appreciate the feedback

This might take me a while, especially as I'll be using it as a learning tool and practice agenda whilst compiling it!

Give me a few days and I will prepare it for you! Probably after Christmas
