I've Reached A Plateau... Options

Hi guys.. I've been playing for a good five years now (I'm 20) and i feel like I'm kind of stuck at a level and don't know where to go next...

Here's where I'm at..

I come on this site every now and then to maybe view a lesson or just scroll in the forums..but not that regularly.. so i haven't been that committed to this site, i usually just practise with no plans or goals, just play play play for hours... still enjoying it but not really moving forward.

In terms of how good i am, I'd say I'm like between a 3 and a 4 when it comes to GMC lessons, they are the lessons i can complete..

I love blues, blues rock, rock & I'm slowly getting into jazz...

I love players like - Hendrix/Townshend/SRV/J.Page/Clapton

I really want to continue to build my speed but most importantly my pick accuracy, i feel i've got the speed in me waiting to come out however i keep getting held back by my picking accuracy :@ very frustrating but also exciting because i know in time i will get there!

i recently watched an interview with Joe Satriani..and although he's not one of my idols/influences (but obviously he's amazing) he said something which really described me at this present time.. basically that you want to get to a level to train your musical ear so that if you hear a piece of music, you know what key it's in and by listening to the progression, you know every possible scale/note you can hit...

so I'm at a level where i know a couple of different scales for each chord... but not every possible route i can go down..

To summarise - my goal is to improve my speed & pick accuracy, but most importantly all the different scales of each key and chords... i want to know the guitar inside out.....

I think Matt (The professor) could help You a lot with the scales assignment. As for the picking accuracy it's a individual thing. We spend a lot of time here at GMC talking this topic all over again. Everyone needs different solutions. First very important step is to show us Your skills and most detailed view on Your right hand position while trying to pick in some higher speed. Hey

That's a common place to find yourself when you're about 5-7 years into playing guitar, you're playing and practicing but have found yourself in a bit of a rut as far as moving forward.

To learn scales, one exercise you can do is work a key on one string at a time.

So, try practicing the C major scale but only on the E strings, then only the B, then the G, then the D and then the A string.

Sometimes moving across the neck like this will really open things up and allow you to see the neck differently, as well as fill in any holes in your knowledge of the fretboard and/or key centers.

From there, move on to other major scales, melodic minor scales and arpeggios in the same way, one string at a time until you can play any scale in any key on any single string.

Will provide some new focus in the practice room and open things up at the same time. Try it out and see what you think.

yeah ok cool sounds good... see it's hard trying to balance out the time with guitar for songwriting & personal practise... I find for me i go through phases... so i go through a phase where i'd spend the majority of my time on just songwriting... then the next phase i stop writing as much and then i'm completely focused on improving my ability..

but i've got alot of free time on my hands lately so It's time for the 'Improving my ability' phase haha

yeah, it's difficult to organize our time when there is so much to do and not that much time. That's why I consider having routines for diary work is a good way to go when you feel a bir blocked because of the amount of information that we are use to receive.

And yes darius, i guess time is key.. because you can't plan to write songs, they just come to you when ever the time is right...
but the more i improve my ability, when the time is right, i can write better songs/parts to songs i guess.

The good news is that, eventually, you can look forward to "Writing Songs At Will" the same way you can look forward to "Writing Solos At Will". In short, part of becoming "Good" is to be able to Summon you talent "At Will". Sounds like you are starting to put the pieces together and put the time in. That alone is what keeps most folks from picking up an instrument, and what keeps those that do pick one up, from every reaching the level they first aspired to.

One thing I'd suggest also is to attend as many vid chat lessons as possible. If you are working full time, there are weekend vid chats (mine), if you are available week days, there are more to choose from Make time to attend these. Get a web cam if you don't have one. Record yourself playing regularly and share the vid. Use the web cam to show your understanding of the material in the vid chats. In short, ENGAGE!!!!

The best thing you can do is keep playing and keep honing your focus on practice. It's not always easy. It's not always fun. But anyone who's reached the level of play where they can summon their talent at will can honestly say, it's worth it
