Some Opinions On What I Should Do?, gear upgrading. |

Hey there, This is my first post on this forum, if that means anything to anybody.
I'd like some advice as far as upgrading my gear, if you wouldn't mind. Last year for Christmas, I got my first guitar. It is a Sqiuer Strat that came bundled with a G-dec jr. amp. A Great starter setup, from what I can tell. Anyway, I'm starting to look at other things now. My friend, who has been teaching me to play along with this site, has suggested that I look into upgrading now. He isn't the type of guy who just gets the best stuff because it's available, so I trust his judgment. Anyway, I pretty much found the guitar I want: http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product...itar?sku=511141  Though budget may not (read: most likely will not) allow it. From what my friend tells me, it's basically a Fender rendition of a Les Paul with a Strat neck on it. I like how it feels and sounds. As for the amp, my friend has been in the market for one as well. He has a peavey Delta Blues amp at the moment, and, while it serves his purpose just fine, and was free, it's not really what he's looking for. He preaches against solid state amps as if they are developed by Satan himself, so he's looking strictly at tube amps. He has been keeping an eye open for something useful for me, and showed me this last week: http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product...-Amp?sku=481443  Now, for the same reason as the guitar, it isn't too likely that I'll be getting it right away. I'll be 18 soon, and my parents told me that they want me to get a credit card, put something on it, and pay it off before they charge interest, in order to build credit. (I never thought I'd see the day when my parents told me to get a credit card). Anyway, Guitar Center (the only music store withing an hour of me that I know of) almost always has a 12 month no interest deal going on. This means that I will prolly be able to get either a guitar OR the amp. (If anyone cares, I DO work and will be paying for this myself) My main question is: the guitar or the amp. Also, feel free to show me something better and/or cheaper if you feel so inclined, the more input the better, I'll be working with the next set of gear for quite a while, I predict, so I don't want to get stuck with junk. |

what type of music do you play?

On the subject of credit, your parents are right in wanting you to build it up, but you'll get a much higher credit score if you maintain a small balance, say $100 or so, and make regular payments. This gives a higher score than paying the balance in full each month. The interest charge will be minimal. Just don't let it build up on you... keep the balance low!

For my self, I'd be happy to play the crappiest guitar as long as I had a good amp. So I'd say amp first.

Guitar or Amp ??

Guitar is the most important thing when you are a guitar player, so buy a guitar. You're still learning to play it and don't need big amp yet. Quality instrument is what matters.

Definitely guitar first. Despite yourself, the guitar is the most important thing in guitar playing. So go guitar first.
Good amp is important for gigs, but you will not be fully useful in day by day practice (and a good guitar is to be used in any occasion) However, take your time to make the decision of which guitar to buy. The more you play guitar, the more exigent you become about the instrument. So, think a lot about the guitar you are going to buy and how long it will serve you. Try first deciding what kind of sound you want (single coil, humbucker, a mix?) and then go to a guitar shop and spend a lot of time there testing the guitars by yourself. Try different brands. At least fender, Gibson and Ibanez to have a rough idea of what´s there. At last but not least, liking a guitar is something very personal. If you only want to play home i suggest get a new guitar and maybe a Pod or Toneport to play and record your stuff. It is alot better then getting a cheap amp

I'm with superize - toneport or POD is perhaps a better buy for you after the guitar.
