Start off with something other people think sound good- and eventually you will start tweaking it a little, then alot- eventually you will have your own unique sound! |

for a good tone you must have a tube amp or preamp tube other wise good pickups +tube = good & warm sound

I've managed to get some real good tones using my GT-8 board directly into my soundcard.

I understand your attitude and I agree that you should try to get the best tone out of the equipment that you have now, but you have to be aware of the fact that if you are using very cheap equipment your sound will always be limited, no matter how long you will work on it. The man behind the knobs can't perform miracles when the tools are not good enough. I would also suggest that you check out some settings of other users that have similar equipment, then you could try to tweak the settings a bit to adjust them to your personal taste, if it works, fine, if not you can still consider to get some new gear. The most important thing in my opinion is that you have an idea about what sound you want, so you can clearly work on reaching this, instead of blindly twisting some knobs and checking if the result sounds nice.

Well best way is to experiment on your own and try to learn which knob does what..There is no instant good sound answer
Really depends on a lot of factors and end result is always subjective (sounds good to person that made it not with a rule that it sound good to everyone else)...When you get familiar well with your equipment you will surly know how to make a sound that you imagine in your head
