Hello folks,
I'm doing Ben's Petrucci Made Easy lesson HERE. I'm nearly up to speed but when I play at 100% speed I'm struggling with the triplets in bars 17 & 18. What's happening is I'm handing the note on just before the pick hits the string on the second and third note of each triplet.. It doesn't happen at 90%.

Any ideas how to overcome this?

Cheers smile.gif

Success is not obtained overnight. It comes in instalments; you get a little bit today, a little bit tomorrow until the whole package is given out. The day you procrastinate, you lose that day's success.

Hi Phil, this is a typical alternate picking lick and it requires practice focused on trying to make your movements the smaller possible.

It's very important to practice at a tempo in which you can play the notes clearly, with both hands on sync and with tight timing. While you do it, check out your hands and try to notice if your movements are as small and "economic" as the ones by the instructor. If you feel that you are doing the things right, increase tempo gradually by 2 bpms. This is not something that you'll master in 1 or 2 days, it requires some time of practice and can be combined with some other alternate picking exercises.

You know that you can tell me if you need some links to complementary exercises. wink.gif

Thanks Gab,

I think maybe a couple of exercises might help.

I posted this here rather than in our mentoring thread to give others the benefit of the advice given wink.gif

Cheers Gab

Hi Phil, that's quite common to have that issue. The 3rd and 4th fingers are well known for being a bit unruly with their timing.. they don't like to be controlled like the index and 2nd finger for some reason wink.gif

They don't seem to have the same muscular restraint as the first two fingers so when we think of using them they're just BAM - straight onto the neck with no hesitation.. always too early!

We can develop it, of course, it just takes a little time.

You mention that it sounds ok at 90% but not at 100%.

I don't work with percentages when practising but I'd recommend you work with a click if the backing tracks are not giving the right increments of practise for you. The logical solution is to set a click above the manageable tempo but not as high as 100%, whatever bpm that might be for you.

The other thing is to not change strings like the actual lick does but cycle the same shape and focus on the timing of those fingers, without the extra demand of having to change strings. Apply that to all the shapes involved individually until you feel more comfortable.

Cheers Ben,

I was using the speed trainer in GP6 where you can go up in very small increments.

I'll try a click.

Cheers buddy.

Great advice from BEN and GABE! Break the link in to smaller chunks and work on each chunk till you get it where you want it then put the lick back together. Also, it does just take time and practice. The key to everything it seems, is repetition. smile.gif Like gabe said, play the bits at a speed that you can play them cleanly at, then bump just a couple of BPM. You will get there smile.gif
