EMG has had something like this for a while, but its nice to see someone else has created something similar for passive pickups. The name is kind of funny though, it reminds me of one those adult toys you find in the back of a guy magazine like FHM or Maxim tongue.gif

Pretty cool and yes it's about time. I"m still looking forward to the day when pickups are so modular that you can pop them out like lego bricks and just swap the pickup unit only. This would of course require pickups to use the same backing/pinout.

Love the idea! Very very useful! wink.gif I don't know why changing pickups has to be so complicated.

There actually is such a guitar that has been around for ages, its called the Ampeg AMG100. The pickups on the guitar just slide in and out via a groove cut out on the face of the guitar. The only problem is the pickups are proprietary, and this is probably why this design has never taken off.

Check it out here:

Mudbone nailed it. It would require a proprietary plate/insert/etc. for every pickup that wanted to use it. So even if each vendor came up with something, say EMG had one, and then Duncan had one, it would not cross over between them. It does seem strange that even in this day and age we are still using wired leads coming out of pickups instead of conductive/contact points like a cell phone battery. Those little metal looking squares on pop in batteries can carry signal as well as charge. It does seem like a gap in the market.

I'd be willing to take my strings off just to avoid that gap in the body the AMC 100 uses but I give them props for making the effort to push things forward. The basic design/concept of how pickups work hasn't changed that much for eons it seems. We did add active preamps, ceramic magnets, etc. But it's still a big magnet with wires coming out that connect to volume/tone pots.

Maybe this year we will see some bigger steps forward as microprocessors continue to get more powerful and smaller. Maybe something like the VARIAX could be reduced to pickup size instead of taking an entire guitar. Also, if the "Variax modular Pickup" could have blutooth (like a cell phone does) you could put new sounds/patches on it wirelessly without having to plug in the guitar to your computer. Being limited to the tone of one pickup is an enormous limitation even if you love that pickup. I love EMGs, but they are just not right for everything. Wold be handy to have an iphone app/pc app that could wirlessly control what your pickup sounded like. A few clicks, EMG, a few more clicks Duncan, etc.

I don't like this solution, it's too complicated. It's a good transitional solution, but I think they could invent something like a universal SD platform for their pickups, and you can just slide the pickups in from above the strings (have to loosen the strings a bit, but it's way better than unscrewing everything. It think this would be a great solution, but this, not that sure..
