after playing around with the minor pentatonic scale I know it pretty well and wondering
which scale I should learn next?
its the only scale iknow so far so I was thinking the major pentatonic or the major scale

and a few more questions:
how well should I learn the scales before learning new once, do I need to play them really fast
and can play them inn inn alot of different keys or do you use them more as tools when you make
stuff.and do abit of thinking first biggrin.gif

and about the major scale, why are the boxes not 3 note per string, isnt that better?
after looking at the major scale boxes im abit confused on how to practice such a scale tongue.gif

I usually advise this order:

Minor Pentatonic
Major Pentatonic
Major
Minor

After that, its up to you!

That's a great way to go about learning scales!
And once you get to the major scale all the theory crap that everyone talks about will start to make sense!! But I would recommend learning the major scale, just because all western music is based on the major scale, and once you learn the major scale you open yourself to the modes and all kinds of different scales and even chords! Just for the fact that it greatly helps your understanding of theory I'd recommend you learn the C Major scale. But it's up to you! If there was one way to go about learning guitar we'd all be the same!

You can learn the minor scale, or the major pentatonic scale. To keep a balance, I suggest a major pentatonic, and then do some research on how to combine them. THen move on to MAJOR scale and modes after that. Start reading the theory on the forum here and there so you can easily see what to practise next.

You dont need to learn to play the scale exercises fast in order to know a scale. You do need to know the scale in ALL positions on the fretboard and know how to combine positions using slides. (I sugggest you check out my pentatonic shift sliding lesson). When you learn all positions equally well, and know where are the root notes well - so well, that you dont even need to look at the fretboard and the fingers go by themselves on the notes you imagine in your head - then you got it right.

THere are many ways to practise major scales, and YES there are 3 note per string positions. You just have to find them smile.gif

The major and minor scales are definitely the first ones to tackle, once you have a pretty good understanding of how to play them and how they relate to music, you should move onto learning the seven modes and how they interact with each other. Check out Andrew's theory lessons for this! One you master all of these (make sure you understand why they work the way they do and not just learn the boxes!), then move onto more exotic scales, whatever you can come across or create, pretty much!

After learning the major scale, it'll all be downhill from there. smile.gif

Shuffle the boxes, and enter modal land: dorian, phrygian, lydian, mixolydian, ...
Harmonic minor is the same 7 major scale positions, with a couple of notes altered.

QUOTE ("Steve Vai")
Start by playing something - a bend, a riff, a scale, a song - very slowly; if you make a mistake, start over; do this over and over, until you can play it flawlessly - and I do mean flawlessly - many times in a row. Next, gradually increase the tempo. Eventually you'll be flailing like a madman.
