Hi all
I saw an interesting post in the REC Zone by Darius about Palm Muting:

"To get most powerful and juicy palm muting tone, we do not "jump with the pick" as with regular picking motion. It's rather pushing it hardly to make is sweep from one string to another (another is a kind of limit line and resting point after the stroke). So the mechanics of this looks like:

1. Rest the pick on muted string
2. Press until it falls onto another string"

Can anyone point me to a video that show what Darius is suggesting?

By the way, the REC Zone is a chest of treasure, so many important suggestions and idea there.

Thanks in advance
Carmine

Hi Carmine, from what I can understand here, he is suggestion to do something similar to what we do when we play muted sweep picking on. When we do sweep picking, we do exactly what he described there so I recommend you to get into the spoken video of this lesson:

And let me know if it's clear. Also, Darius comment will be very valuable on this thread. I've just sent him a PM. wink.gif

Hey Carmine! It's actually as simple as it sounds smile.gif Typical picking motion is to hit the string and take the pick away/outside. You can notice it while playing chords but not strumming - rather separated notes overlaying.

Now lot's of rock and metal players push the their hands way above what we usually consider already being a "heavy stroke/picking". One of examples is what happens inf palm muted riffs and it looks like pushing the pick inbetween the strings, rather then going across them. It's like releasing the arrow from the arc. String springs out and even hits the highest frets sometimes. It all affects the tone result in a specific, powerfull way.

If we attach palm muting to regular picking motion, we can still get nice tone, but sometiems it's just a little too weak for the style we play or...any oter arguble reason smile.gif

BTW...for visual point of view you may not always be able detect someone else doing this. It more related to your right thumb pushing some strength against the string, while the pick crosses it.

Here is a quick demo with a guitar cam. Watch my right hand. The back part of my hand stays planted on the bridge while I'm striking the strings. This gives a nice muted chunky sound smile.gif

About 1:17 in on this video I do a bit of palm muting. Just watch my right hand. It's not that hard really, just keep your hand on the bridge and mute the strings while you pick smile.gif
