GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Strings Suggestion

Posted by: Stratman58 May 28 2007, 07:06 AM

I've been buying strings in the category of whatever is usually on sale at the guitar center. No more! I bought a 5 pack deal of ernie ball super slinkies recently, and these things snap like nothing. I mean, I did a little tapping on the high E string and it busted. ...Tapping.... blink.gif
This wasn't just one occasion either. I do a little shredding once in awhile and they bust.

My strat came with a set of Fender Bullets, of course, and these lasted a lot longer than the super slinkies did. Because of a bad experience with bullets in the past although, I stayed away from buying them. Although, this may change.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

I've always just been using Elixir. They work fine, except that the high E strings snap all the time, so I could use some recommendations too smile.gif But then again, it might be the way I play aswell. I did that on 2 different guitars yesterday >_<

I don't know what you guys do to your strings but I haven't had one snap in about 10 years smile.gif

I have been using EB Super Slinkys and Hybrids forever, but just recently I tried a set of Elixirs and have to say I was impressed - I'll probably switch.

BTW, Strings are another area where personal preference is king - expect lots of people to tell you that their brand is the only possible choice smile.gif IMO, there is not a great deal to choose between, so if you like a brand stick with it.

I've snapped a string once...and I was being an idiot with it rolleyes.gif .

I do not know how you could snap one tapping!! I know this will sound condescending, but are you sure the guitar is set up right? Not a little too much tension with a floating bridge etc?

I would highly recommend elixirs. I have overly sweaty hands and used to rust through strings within a week. Elixirs last me a good month and are very good quality, stay bright and are extremely well priced!

Have you checked to see if there is any manufacturing nicks left on the saddle? They are usually tiny, but it doesn't take much to wear the high E to snap. If so, a nail file will be fine to sand it down.

I Play rather "Hard" on my strings, the words "Light Touch" cannot be applied to me, so i use when playing Standard Tuning to Drop C, I use Dean Markley 9-42's, they feel and sound great, and they last me about 2 mothsn, although i replace them about once every 3 weeks.

When i Drop Tune, C Standard - Drop A, I Use GHS Boomers 13-56, same reason as i use the dean for hihger tunings, when you use the 13's at low tuning, your osunds gets a real kick in the balls!

thats wierd about how you break the super slinkys

i've had them on one of me guitars for like 3 months now, nothing broken and i dont exactly have a light touch. oh well tongue.gif
could it be that the tensions are a little wierd? like if you have a baritone guitar and are using super slinkys? tongue.gif

or maybe just go for a higher gauge of strings if you break them so easily.

if i have cheap strings on..sad.gif im scared to play it to its fullest..ive had the high e string snap and hit me in the eye sad.gif, so yea but i think that was just because my guitar was a cheap 100 dollar fake strat lol, but now i got my ibanez biggrin.gif i dont think ill snap much strings..im getting really good at not snapping htem.i used to snap string like once a week or maybe more..sad.gif, but i like the elixirs thats what i would recommend also, but like andrew said its personall preference smile.gif
