GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Building Speed

Ive only been playing guitar for a little over a year and lately ive been trying to increase my speedpicking and I have been having some problems with right and left hand coordination. Today I was practicing some alternate speed picking excercises and something just clicked into place and i drastically increases my speed. My right and left hand were working together how they should have been all along. Now I once i memorize a fast lick and get it down in my head, I have no problems getting it up to speed. Is this how it's supposed to happen or did I just get kinda lucky and stumble into it? It seems really sudden to me and now im practicing speed lessons like crazy because its so much more fun now.

sure are a lot of North Carolina people here.
I learned a lot from Kris right at the start, on his speed picking examples, of what to shoot for. beyond working to get your fingers to fret each note cleanly, to really get a neat sound you have to have a pick attack, where you get a sharp sound from the pick on each strike. That is what I shoot for. When you get that sound, it really is special. Guys like Gilbert do that, not just fret it cleanly, but the pick becomes like a percussion instrument, that sounds out on each strike of the pick, no matter how fast you are going.

exactly, now i definately still have a long way to go. But for like 2 days of work i already feel 100% better about my speed picking. and yeah there are quite a few NC'ers around the board. Maybe we should arrange a GMC-NC meet...hmmm

The first step of improvement..... This is going to hapened....Now you have to continue working but bevare of that it is going to get back to where you were before but on a faster tempo you get stuck but then you just ave to work and then before you know it feel improvement.......

In all fairness without sounding cheeky does it really matter if that's the way it's supposed to be? As long as it works for you that's all that matters. It's up to you to keep that up and make sure you go for precision and accuracy before speed.

It is normal to experience sudden technique boosts over a period of time. It is the reflection of your work up until then. Just take it easy and don't rush it. That is how it's supposed to be
