Im looking to buy my first amp and was looking into the spider jam. Ive heard a lot of mixed opinions about spider amps. Im a beginner so im not sure if it would be a bad choice for me or not.

First off heres what I like about the amp and why:

1. Numerous presets: I can spend more time practicing then trying to find the sound Id like.
2. Jam tracks: I think this feature will introduce me to playing with others, keeping time and let me develop my own riffs and licks.
3. Looping feature: I can listen to myself play and solo over my own riffs. Could also help me catch on to my mistakes faster so I can fix them.

I live in an apartment but will be taking my amp maybe once a week to a house where ill be able to play at volume so most of the time ill have my headphones plugged in....is there an issue with that?

Thats pretty much all Ive got right now, If you guys need more info to help me decide let me know...I dont wanna make a $500 mistake, Thx

Marcus

Sounds like the amp for you. I don't think there's a great difference between the modeling Spider, Vox, Roland etc. I don't think you'll go wrong either way, just make sure it meets your demands.

Numerous presets isn't always a gurantee for that you will find a sound you like. And to key in your own sounds is part of the learning process wink.gif

This is definitely what I recommend for you if you're starting. You don't need a great tone right away anyway, but great features that will help you develop your technique.

I figure the presets could be a helping hand in shaping my own sound by giving me some ideas and nice starting points.

I still havent picked up the amp but will probably do so in the next couple weeks so keep the opinions and feedback comming guys, thx

You will get alot of good sounds from the spider. Its not perfect but for the money you get alot of versatility.

Ok so basically for a starter/practice amp its pretty good but once im a lil better and wanna have a better tone I should look for a valve powered amp or something other then a modeling amp correct??

Also is playing through the headphones gonna be ok or will the sound quality be really poor? Can this amp still sound decent enough at a low volume to where I dont have to use headphones? Keep in mind I am in an apartment right now, thx

This amp will do well at low volume and with headphones. I think you will be pleased with it's performance overall. If you think you don't need a traditional amp and primarily play through headphones, I would suggest you also try out the POD X3 or XT. Since I bought my x3 live I hardly ever play through my amps. The range of tones you can get is mind boggling. It will fuel your creativity for years to come. Try one out and I'll bet you'll want one. Good luck.
