Fun title indeed!

First and foremost, I'd like to say thanks so much for taking the time!

The only video of me in my laptop currently is this one. It's a snippet of John Mayer's "No Such Thing".
I've got a clip of "Comfortable - John Mayer" in my phone if you wanna see that also smile.gif

The guitar I'm using in the vid is a Martin DCX1E.

>Sorry, I cancelled it and uploaded to YT >.< I didn't realize you'd have to download to watch. Back in a few minutes

Hey mate! Congratulations on a great acoustic tone and good rhythm skills smile.gif

I liked this very much and here's what I have in mind:

- theory
- melodic lead playing - what would your favorite technique be? Alongside that we will work on making you an expressive player - any John Mayer fan should strive towards that smile.gif

What else aside this, do you think you would like to tackle?

That all sounds good! Nothing would make me happier than being able to play improvised solos.

Also, the scales are starting to really interest me. I've looked at a few of the pinned topics regarding them. They give out formulas for each scale (pentatonic etc), and this is an example :
QUOTE
In the scales introduction we found out that any scale can be described by a simple numeric formula, and the Pentatonic scale is no exception to this.

Its formula is: 3 2 2 3 2

If you were to try to explain how that would interpret on the fret board, which strings (going from low E to high E) to play, to a child lol, how would you?

I'll take a look around some more and see if I can find the answer on my own, though, I'd like to point out that I know next to nothing when it comes to music theory biggrin.gif

Hey mate - before starting out with theory, I'd like to ask you for a contextual information regarding your question, because I'll be damned if i understand that formula laugh.gif The formula for the minor pentatonic scale is 1 b3 4 5 b7 so, I'd be curious to know where you took that from. Maybe I'll figure it out then biggrin.gif

Oh of course.

I got it from this lesson. I glanced through it and picked that up somewhere.

now I got it smile.gif It deals with the number of semitones you add to each consecutive note in the scale so that you may end up having the intervals making up the formula.

The explanation is this one:

Lets see how this works in an example, for instance G Minor Pentatonic.

We start with G as our root note, and add each step of the formula to get the next note:

G + 3 semitones is Bb
Bb + 2 semitones is C
C + 2 semitones is D
D + 3 semitones is F
F + 2 semitones is G

So there you have it - G minor pentatonic is the notes G, Bb, C, D, F, G. You can apply this formula with any other root note to get the exact scale that you want.

If you apply the formula I gave you - 1 b3 4 5 b7 8 these are the notes you will get G, Bb, C, D, F, G (8 is the same as 1, right? smile.gif The octave.)

Is it clearer now, what say you? smile.gif

The strings don't matter mate smile.gif here's what you should do ->

grab a note chart showing all of the notes found on the neck
spot the notes making up the G minor pentatonic scale
you have the shapes in front of you due to the fact that you know where the notes are. Look at them in terms of 2 notes per string.

You can start from the G found on the 3rd position on the low E string. Bb is three positions up and there you go you have two notes on the low e string which are the next two ones and on what string? (it needs to be close to the Low E string wink.gif)

OK, I think I understand.

Following the 3-2-2-3-2 rule makes up 1st box or pattern in the pentatonic scale?
And in this case, this formula is for one of the MINOR pentatonic scale boxes?

The formula applies for the minor pentatonic scale starting from its root to it's octave. Boxes are there for your ease of remembering where the notes are on the neck. I'd be uber happy if you would learn to see the notes and not the patterns biggrin.gif Don't get scared, as you will learn the patterns anyway, without necessarily aiming for it (you'll play the pentatonic scale so much that it will become second nature tongue.gif)

What say you? smile.gif

Hey matey smile.gif

First things first, I'd like you to take a look over this series of lessons - they combine practice with theory. You will learn how to play a scale by harmonizing it, thus turning single notes into chords. it will be very important for the future. Please take a look at the lessons, tell me if everything is clear and I'll set you up with a homework afterwards wink.gif

As a whole, we are getting into applied theory - you will understand how to extract chords made out of three different notes, from knowing the notes of a certain scale smile.gif That is basically what these lessons are all about wink.gif

How is it going so far?

Hey man, glad you are back smile.gif

Now that you understood how a scale is harmonized I would have a little assignment for you, but first, make a list of 3-5 of your favorite songs that can be played by using chords smile.gif

Deal?
