Also, the scales are starting to really interest me. I've looked at a few of the pinned topics regarding them. They give out formulas for each scale (pentatonic etc), and this is an example : QUOTE In the scales introduction we found out that any scale can be described by a simple numeric formula, and the Pentatonic scale is no exception to this. Its formula is: 3 2 2 3 2 If you were to try to explain how that would interpret on the fret board, which strings (going from low E to high E) to play, to a child lol, how would you? The explanation is this one: Lets see how this works in an example, for instance G Minor Pentatonic. We start with G as our root note, and add each step of the formula to get the next note: G + 3 semitones is Bb Bb + 2 semitones is C C + 2 semitones is D D + 3 semitones is F F + 2 semitones is G So there you have it - G minor pentatonic is the notes G, Bb, C, D, F, G. You can apply this formula with any other root note to get the exact scale that you want. If you apply the formula I gave you - 1 b3 4 5 b7 8 these are the notes you will get G, Bb, C, D, F, G (8 is the same as 1, right? The octave.) Is it clearer now, what say you? Look at them in terms of 2 notes per string. You can start from the G found on the 3rd position on the low E string. Bb is three positions up and there you go you have two notes on the low e string which are the next two ones and on what string? The formula applies for the minor pentatonic scale starting from its root to it's octave. Boxes are there for your ease of remembering where the notes are on the neck. I'd be uber happy if you would learn to see the notes and not the patterns Don't get scared, as you will learn the patterns anyway, without necessarily aiming for it (you'll play the pentatonic scale so much that it will become second nature ) What say you?
