I notice that I seem to alternate pick arpeggios now even though that wasn't my intention. I am by no means a fast picker but have been concentrating on AP for scales and such and now seem to do it on arpeggios as well. But I noticed on the arpeggio lessons that the instructors don't AP these. Am I better off breaking the AP habit right now on these becaue it will hurt me down the road.

Thanks for any advice you can give.

Michael

That is good habit man, don't brake it. Learn sweep of course, but playing aletrnate picking arpeggios makes you generally great picker, also with scales.

You should keep your way but also add sweep to your picking world,
you're getting different results (sound) if you play with AP or sweeping,
the more options you have the better!

Here is some sweep for arpeggios

and also some AP for arpeggios, scales etc. smile.gif

Have you seen Steve Morse Alternate Pick Arpeggios?

I wanted to quit after I saw that, practice sweep, but if you are doing this, keep at it.

I am currently working on this lesson, and all the arpeggios are AP'd.
Generally, AP is never wrong, but it's kind of technique for those who want to achieve high speeds.

If you like the sound of downpicking every note, or sweep picking, practice that too.
The other picking techniques (sweep picking, downpicking, fingerpicking and economy picking) are also never wrong if you like the sound, but they're most of the time not used for achieving high speeds.

AP is just a more economical approach of picking (achieve great speeds with more limited effort).
You CAN alternate pick Master of Puppets, but can you downpick Malmsteen songs?

Hope I made some sense there.

nothing wrong with practicing AP on arpeggios, but economy picking (sweeping) arpeggios is very useful as well for covering wider array of techniques, it will only do you good.

There are many ways to play an arpeggio, it just depends of the situation and your idea. You can even play it using legato, it's a great thing to do. You can sweep downwards and get back using only hammer ons and pull offs, or you can play the whole arpeggio just by using legato.
