GMC Forum _ Ben Higgins _ Desert Bus Collab !

Posted by: Ben Higgins Jul 18 2013, 05:35 PM

Hey GMC and welcome to a new VIDEO Collab - I call it the DESERT BUS COLLAB ! Why ?? Because 2 of our 'lovable' GMC regulars (A certain German and Finn who shall remain nameless)decided to start a campaign of terror against me, urging me to come and do a new collab for you all. wink.gif Among their suggested materials of 'Inspiration' was this awesome bus simulator game, called.. you guessed it, 'DESERT BUS.'

However, never one to shy away from a challenge.. I actually went and spent some time in the American desert and recorded some ambient sounds which you will hear on the following backing track.

 Desert_Bus_Collab.mp3 ( 1.37MB ) : 549

For my musical cues, I was inspired by a vintage SEGA game called 'Road Rash II', which featured a level in Arizona. I love the fat, greasy 6/8 dawdling groove so I stole the idea...

Tempo: 110bpm
Key: D

The bass line is just the root note of D, with a brief minor pentatonic C,A,C bit at the end of the 8th bar. The solitary D note means you have free reign to abuse as many of the D related modes as you wish because there is no overall minor or major tonality. The tonality is ambiguous. D Lydian run you say ? Why not, indeed. D Phyrigan ? You evil little so and so - do it !

If you want to show me your practise runs or your takes in all their glory then by all means chuck a Youtube video in the thread. However, when it comes to the time for sending me stuff....
Don't forget to gimme:

Your isolated guitar audio track
Your video

Deadline is 8th August !! cool.gif

Hahahahahahahah who knows, maybe someone is terrorizing the German and the Finn making them terrorize you ph34r.gif cool.gif

Nice backing though wink.gif

Posted by: Gitarrero Jul 18 2013, 05:44 PM

who would terrorize a loveable guy such as yourself? I sure hope it stops soon, if you need help, you know where to find me. My friend Ville and I might be able to find these guys.
As for the collab, it is great to see you back in action and I am in!

Glad to see that there's some brave takers for the collab ! Anyone else want to take a ride on the Desert Bus ?? biggrin.gif

Posted by: Slavenko Erazer Jul 20 2013, 11:51 AM

I would take a ride in that buss if there's enough icey -cold Guinness (or another brewerage) in it. And don't forget AC since today's 35C in the shadow here ph34r.gif

Any chance we can get a little extension of the deadline for this Ben? I just ran across this recently and have a devious idea I need to work on just a bit. smile.gif

Posted by: Ben Higgins Jul 30 2013, 08:59 PM

The deadline has now been changed to 8th of August at the request of a certain Finnish GMCer who shall not be named (it's WeePee). cool.gif

Sorry Ben, I just haven't been able to make the time to get it together enough and make a recording for this collab , but I wanted to go ahead and let you hear the idea that I had recorded to remind myself of the direction I wanted to go. sad.gif kind of a trial run , I missed the 1 coming in and was also pretty sloppy especially at the end where the ending snuck up on me and I kind of lost it biggrin.gif . Anyway here is my first idea take in all it's sloppiness that I laid down as a reference for where I wanted to go. Great sounding takes from the rest of you guys! Rock on! cool.gif

I hope I did everything correctly. I took the Phrygian challenge ... why? I have no idea. It was fun & helpful to me. I just started playing with the Phrygian scale & just couldn't seem to stop. biggrin.gif

I'm using Todd's TH1 preset called "8weekstekniks"

What! Gary this is huge! Ladies and gentlemen, Blister has left the building! Seriously man , you have got to start doing more of these, this is a very good take my friend, congrats! smile.gif Good elements throughout. Melody, phrasing, starting and ending phrases on good strong notes, call and response with tension and release. And even technique, some sliding, some legato, and even some double picking for good measure, not to mention that you told us a story with the overall construction of the solo. Very impressive man! smile.gif Here is proof positive that hard practice and GMC pays off!
Wait I missed something, dry.gif Oh yeah, nice tone! biggrin.gif

Wow! Thanks so much Rich! I really appreciate your comments & your encouragement. I would not have achieved this level without the motivation of my friends here at GMC! I haven't figured out which is scarier to do; REC's or Collabs, but you can't improve unless you take that "Leap of Faith" & just do them! I've got such a long way to go but I've come so far from when I started at GMC! smile.gif

I got up early this morning & did this video. Sorry for the bad quality but hope it is ok. I haven't quite mastered the recording techniques as of yet.

NICE!!! Look at him go!!!! First off, GREAT TONE smile.gif Seriously man your playing is top notch here. Your working yourself to death in and out of chat and it shows in your playing!!!! This is one well built solo. You've taken all the bits that I"m always banging on about in chat and put it to use building your own style. Nicely done!!!

It really does feel like a solo, it's got
1.)A start
2.)A middle
3.)an ending.
this is what separates many great solos from the rest. Each solo is a story so it should have a opener, middle, closer. Not to mention your spiff technique on display. Super congrats on this. You should do these more often!

Todd

Thank you so much Todd! I have enjoyed your chats so much & really feel I am getting a lot out of those lessons. Curses on work for getting in the way of the rest of the amazing instructor's chats.

Oh no! The honour is completely mine! I knew right away this bt had the perfect vibe to get me started in collabs. Passing this first hurdle is a huge accomplishment for me! All the GMC'ers do such amazing professional styled solos in these collabs that it's intimidating to submit my humble take. But now that I've done this one, the next one won't be near as scarey. Thanks so much! smile.gif

That's when that little voice in the back of my head said, "This is the one, do it now!" biggrin.gif Now that I think of it, I believe that little voice may have had a german or finnish accent. wink.gif

Passing this first hurdle is a huge accomplishment for me! All the GMC'ers do such amazing professional styled solos in these collabs that it's intimidating to submit my humble take. But now that I've done this one, the next one won't be near as scarey. Thanks so much! smile.gif

Is this really happening??

or rather, not happening?

Hey Ben, Unfortunately I haven't been able to make the time to get this wrapped up on my end so don't let me hold you up on the mix man. It doesn't look like I am gonna be able to join the party this this time. Great takes everyone! Catch on the next go around hopefully.

I always get the feeling there was a animal sacrificed at the crossroads sometime before Slav does his collab takes... wink.gif

I believe sir, you are the only man I know who could even make Mary Had A Little Lamb sound devilish!

Good one my friend!!!

And here is the final result, gentlemen !! cool.gif

WeePee - Love this take. Really nice note choices.. it does what bluesy solos are meant to do in my opinion, which is to sound COOL. And yours does exactly that !

H4H - Another classic from you. Great variation and note choice. Love the repeating high motifs at the end.. and that little bit of classical vibrato - very neatly done. The chromatic picking is a great finisher.

Blister - Hell yeah, well done once again for your 1st collab entry. You've made a grand entrance, taking the exotic phrygian direction of H4H as well. The timing is great, the pacing is great. As you get even better you'll start to introduce more variation with some busier sections alongside the slower ones - great work !

Slav - Nice touch with the rhythm guitar crunch. It raises the heaviness of the piece nicely. You chose to keep it pentatonic and it works great - the pentatonic is a humble scale but a very effective scale, it can do everything we need it to do and more.

The Hef - Awesome appearance from Ze German. And you're getting SO close to finally nailing that Crazy Train riff !! biggrin.gif

Todd - Always a pleasure to have you onboard my man. Hope you don't mind me injecting my humour into your name. I've said before it's how I always imagine you should be announced - with total attitude !

Me - I'll talk a little about what I did with my solo. I wanted to use the flat5th and major 3rd combo that George Lynch does so well. The simple D root note gave me free reign to choose either minor or major tonality. After a while of messing around with those intervals I realised that it was turning into the D Diminished scale. So that scale ended up providing the base for my solo. In some places I just totally go off piste and just ad lib some chromatic 'outside tones' and hope for the best ;P So that's what's behind the sound of my take.

Well done to everyone involved, this was an ass kicker ! Here's hoping the AK can get on the next one too biggrin.gif

Great collab, was a pleasure to watch at this video!!!

Posted by: Todd Simpson Aug 13 2013, 04:22 PM

WOW! One of the best yet! All of the solos were great, and everything worked as a piece as well. I think it was a greeat idea to use a short backing as it really helped the overall flow and ended up around 3 minutes which is a nice listening interval as well. It's not an accident that many songs are around that time length.

I can see HUGE improvements in playing from you guys and it's great to see! Super congrats to BLISTER for jumping in his first collab!! We did spend an entire lesson on this one and everyone did a great job picking up the licks I put in my solo and I"m glad to see Blister go an entirely different way for his solo than what we covered that day. Nice!

BEN: Must say your solo blew me away as well since each phrase was so unexpected I honestly had no idead where you were going to land next. Great solo! Same to everybody! You guys KILLED IT!!! On a final note, our mad German friend has finally gone over the edge and I think it's brilliant smile.gif

This is really AWESOME Gary, well played sir! Glad to see you in your first collab!

I expect there will be more?

No need to be scared, Ben is the one receiving all of the threats, so he's taking care of that for you... wink.gif

I owe you a lot of thanks, Mark. You were my first real "persuasive motivator" which really helped me get involved. Yes, there will definitely be more cause I had a lot of fun making this! smile.gif Although panic set in after I realized it was a Video collab. ohmy.gif But I wasn't gonna get as far as I had & not reach the finish line. So I got up early the day after the due date & quickly redid the take on video. I was hoping Ben was suffering from "Donut Carb Overload" & overslept on the day after! wink.gif

This was the perfect collab to jump in & get my feet wet (in the desert? huh.gif ) I could take it at my Noob slow pace but I know I need to speed it up from here. I really had fun doing this. And I totally understand about needing more variation. Even I was boring myself a bit with my monotonous eighth note licks. That's when I put Todd's double picking technique at the end.

Thanks again, Todd! If I hadn't started the Phrygian mode due to Ben's sly subliminal tease, I would have used the licks from your chat lesson. I can see me using this bt many times due to its wide range of possibilities. It's a fun track!

Truly awesome takes by everyone! Thanks for letting me be a part of it! smile.gif

It was definitely all you Gary.... I knew you had it in you. I was just trying to get you to share it... and a fine job you did indeed! congrats! smile.gif

It's always a good time having a collab with all these guys!!

Unfortunately I don't have a good setup at this time to get a decent video, or time to make it happen either....one day...or maybe two.
