Hi,

When doing a "pull-off", as far as i know the common technique is to flick the string downward. However, it seems easier to me to flick it upward instead. Is it ok or is it a bad habit ? I'm not big on legato playing and I'm willing to improve that area of playing, so maybe i have to start on good basis.

Thanks,
Phil

Hey,

I have a nice little tube amp that a friend built for me. It has a good sound at low level, but mainly clean/clean to crunch kind of sound. Now, I need to buy some effect to have good rhythm/lead sound. I like to play all kind of music, but mainly classic rock, or classic metal.

What pedal or effect could I buy to get that kind of sound? let say that money is not an issue (to some extent of course).

Thanks,
Philippe

What is a "modal vamp"?

I assume it's just one chord you play over and over and is suited to play some modes over it. Am I right?

For instance, a 7 dominant chord would work with mixolydian. Major seventh would work over
Lydian and Major. Is there a chord i can use that would work only lydian and not major? it'd need
a 4# in it?

Or can I use 2 chords in the vamp?

In any case, I want to record backing tracks for practicing the mode, and I was wondering what kind of chord
progression I can use, with as few chords as possible.

Thanks,
Philippe

Hey,

I read about on exercise on timing. It consists to try to alternate playing:
- on the beat for while
- then a bit ahead
- then a bit behind

Do you think it's a good exercise?

Many metal rhythmic figures are rather simple, but they are played at high-speed using downstrokes only. For instance, the classic "master of puppets" is more than 200bpm. I read an interview of kirk hammet saying that that was getting closed to their limit.

I've never really practice speed downstroke picking, maybe i can go up to 160bpm (with eighth note). Not so fast...

And you, what's your limit? how long did it take for you to get there?

Same question for alternate picking: not a specific pattern, but let say standard major scales positions, 16th notes, alternate picking. My (honest) limit is 115-120 bpm. Difficult to get past it. Following some suggestions on this website, I've been trying to make shorter movements, and also to relax (i realized i start to get tense when i reach my limit). I tried to hold the pick differently, with an angle, but I don't really like the sound with an angle. Anyway, I'm working on it.
