From the top of my head, without checking Audacity:
.aup is a AUdacityProject file. i.e. it's all the settings and tracks etc associated with this sound you are working on. To get that one to an .mp3 file (or .wav or whatever) you have to select "File\Export As" and select the desired output format. Also, to make an .mp3 from Audacity I think you have to download the lame (freeware opensource high quality) mp3 encoder.
Hope I remembered it correctly.

Yes, you have to install the MP3 encoder. And from the menu within Audacity it's:

FILE---->EXPORT AS MP3

You can also export just a section of your track.
