I"ve had a few folks ask me about using Dr. Dre BEATS headphones for mixing/recording. I was taken aback by this as I thought everyone knew that they some of the worst cans on the market. It's a pure marketing scam to sell something pretty with DRE in it. The headphones are mostly glued together instead of using screws and are so light, they actually add little metal parts just to add some weight.

The worst part if the off the shelf drivers (little speakers that make the sound) they use. They are not high end drivers. Sadly, they are crap. So if you feel tempted to use these to mix/record, don't smile.gif You might as well use earbuds. But then again, I have had folks ask me about ear buds too now that I think about it smile.gif I get that money doesn't grow on trees and you gotta use what you have until you can get better. If at all possible save up for good phones asap smile.gif There are several threads here detailing which ones are good smile.gif Here is a thread I started a while ago just to discuss the issue. https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...showtopic=50647

Here is an article about beats that details the lameness.

I'll jump on the occasion and ask a sacreligious question - are there any good headphones for musicians AND gamers with a microphone?

My Sennheiser headphones died one year ago, and now I am using some 25$ headphones "for games" with a microphone. Because I spend quite some time talking by skype in those headphones, I think it is quite important for my headphones to have a microphone, and I don't have space to have few headphone sets on my desk.

I guess that even the more expensive "gamer" headphones aren't what we would like for guitar practice?

Hey Marek, I myself being a gamer as well really like my PlayStation Headset and they work for PC as well and actually sound alright when listening to guitar but I think the best headset I have had are the Turtle Beach headsets, cant remember model number but were around 100 dollars, sounded great smile.gif

And yeah Todd my son had a pair of Beats cost him about 300 dollars and what a disappointment they were!!

Sadly, gaming phones and and studio phones are somewhat built for different purposes. While gaming headsets are meant to "sound great", that's not going to help you get an accurate read on your mixing. You may just keep your gaming phones and buy another pro set of something like the senhiessers for mixing.

Sen does make a pair with a mic, but they are more for broadcast use than for mixing.

One of my favorite overheard lines from a sales guy at the T-Mobile store ... "These are the headphones (Beats) that recording artists use when they're in the studio". I almost interrupted.

Very spiff info wink.gif That tone chart for the beats is almost shocking. Huge hump around 200hz and kill everything in vocal range and bam you have BEATS SOLO headphones. Pre eq to mask screaming rap and shove mid bass down your throat as the cheap drivers can't handle really low bass. Craaaaaaaaap.

I liked the earbuds chart as well. It's a good indicator why these should never be used for mixing.

hell yea they suck, especially for the studio. arnte they made to add lower frequencies? to give them that big boomy sound that thats really not in the mix?
if so why would you want to use them for anything but listening to your music on your phone.
ill stick with sennheiser hd 380 pros all day for everything, took them on a plane ride and watched movies on my iPad there comfy lets your head breath and isolates that outside very well for being so light. and are great for silent jamming and mixing.
best cans i ever had
