When it comes to muting, here are few main things I use. First one would be using index finger as you said, usually to mute lower strings but sometimes even higher ones. And I also use right hand palm a lot. I have it anchored on the bridge all the time and I simply "roll" it a bit to prevent unwanted noise from specific strings. There's is one more "tip" about playing clean etc. Try not to move your fingers too hard. While playing(specially legato,sweeping and skipping),try to remove your fingers from each string easily, to avoid effect of "pull-off" and to prevent ringing of open strings etc. Hope this helps a bit. -------------------- Youtube
