Hello

It sounds a bit weird, Its just how I say it to describe certain chords used, "distortion chords" I called them smile.gif
So basically chords played on a distorted guitar in rock/metal genres.

Since we are not barring a full jazz chord for example while we play metal and so on.
But there is till more to be done than power chords smile.gif

So lets share some chords and voicings we like, when playing a specific style where we use distorted guitars.
Also in what context, for example "I see this chord a lot in the chorus of metalcore songs"

Chords to create a specific modern sound smile.gif

Not modern metal sounds at all but... I love these chord voicings and they're just really comfortable to play.

Cool smile.gif
So 3 note chords I see, works well with distortion.

So if you take the C7M chord you did, we have a Cmaj7 with out the 5th.
So we can kind of construct the usual chords, like 7th, 9s, etc to be 3 note chords just
using the correct intervals.

And to use these chords in a more heavy song, cool
Il experiment with this

Hey mate smile.gif

Pretty much all my metal lessons have chords which involve 7s, 9s 13s or sus4 based on drop C tuning. I recommend these ones if you want to have an in depth look on both chords used and the context:

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Metal-Metrics-1/
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Chord-Melodies/ - this one is mellower, but you will like the chords
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Breaking-Benjamin-Style/
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Pillar-Style/

Most of these chords are arpeggiated, so that they helped be into building atmospheric themes, but some are also used as 'riff chords' as you call them tongue.gif What would be your favorite ones?

It depends on exactly how much distortion we're talking about.

If it's the mega/maxi gain, wall of shredding paper type of OD then not a lot of options other than R 5 R unless you have a 2nd guitar part that's a little cleaner playing actual triads or 7th chords etc.

If you clean it up a bit (with one guitar) then you really do have a lot of options.
I favor these 'moveable' examples below with a pretty healthy amount of gain ...

C2 (or Cadd9) - X35533
F2 (or Fadd9) - XX3563
D2 - X579XX
A2 - 5799XX
Amaj9 - 577600
Amaj9 - 579999
G7sus4 - X(5)5768
Dm9 (no 3rd) - X57555

Fmaj9 - 1X3010 *only in this (first) position

This is a cool topic. You can take every power chord progression and give it a different feeling by adding some extra notes to the chords. There is an interesting list of possibilities and these are my favorites:

Uh oh smile.gif Almost forgot about this one:

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Post-H...g-And-Melodies/

In here, the first chords I played in the main theme are arpeggio versions of some interesting chords - the whole idea here, is that there are two static notes over which the bass notes are always changing, thus creating a sense of movement.

A lot of chords can sound good with distortion, for me it's all about how you voice them I suppose. A lot of more modern djent bands have nice big chords at times.

My favorite at the time being, is definitely this one:

The clean intro is an amazing display of chordal play and the further distorted development as well smile.gif

Periphery is definitely great when it comes to chords and voicings.

I am currently trying to make a vocal/acoustic arrangement for this piece:

I found some very interesting chord possibilities that go amazingly well with the voice smile.gif Acoustic tuned to C# standard:

For the 'verse part' (min 01:38 - 02:11)

xx0765
xx8765
xx5335
xx0765

I haven't yet figured out much, but this is what I got at first glance tinkering with it a bit tongue.gif Hope it will trigger some ideas wink.gif
