GP5 opens all older formats of guitar pro, so it shouldn't be different now.

I think it should be compatible but not completely. Its reported to have some problems with different tabs in having to tweak levels/sounds etc. It should open up basic tabs but I'm not sure if ALL features of gtp5 tabs will work in the Guitar Pro 6 version.

It will work, but it won't work other way around (GP6 file opened in GP5)

Right, GP6 opens all GP files, but previous versions won't open GP6 files.

I've download the trial of GP6 but I can't get it to open a saved GP5 file. Do I need to buy it? I wanted to try it out first.

Yes, I think that should be one of the trial version limitations. Please check Guitar pro site for details. If I remember correctly trial can only open the built in demo tab.

Thanks Bogdan,

Is it worth having for someone at my level? Or is it too advanced?

Cheers

Phil

Hi Phil,

What would you like to use Guitar Pro 6 software for?

Just opening and playing back tablature files or writing your own tabs with it?

Guitar Pro 6 can be a useful tool indeed but it can also get very complex depending on the intended use. If you'd be using it just to play back the tablature files, it is very straightforward. You can play, pause or adjust the tempo of the file and make other small adjustments. Writing tabs with it can get complex as besides technical stuff around the software, you'd also need to get some practice in transcribing what you play, writing down rhythms in correct note values etc.

I'd suggest checking out the free open source software which also supports gp5 files format, it is called Tux Guitar: http://tuxguitar.herac.com.ar/ ...just to see how such software feels and what it can do smile.gif

If you have Guitar Pro 5, I would probably just stick with that. Sometimes you'll come around a GP6 file which you can't open, but I must say I generally like GP5 more.
