Developing My Very Own Style

Hey everyone - I have a few questions about the creation of style.

Let's say that I have two bands in mind that I would like to meld and combine to create my own style. First being Muse and second being Evanescence (not necessarily the guitar only - but the mood of their songs). <Maybe I'm crazy but I think it would be an interesting/unique combination!

Now, this is all hypathetical but what would I need to start doing in order to build a style of two bands and translate it into pieces for guitar?

Well developing your own style isnt an easy thing. It comes with years of hard practice I suppose.
Who knows in 5 months time, you might not even like Evanescene and Muse anymore . I suggest learning some songs from both of the bands. Thats the simplest and most effective thing I can say. Im not a big Muse fan. Evanescene wise, I never really appreciated their guitarwork as much as I did their lyrics and the lead singers voice.

Technique wise you should probably look at everything.
Developing your own style will take a combination of trying different techniques out and seeing what helps you get and sound like your in the mood of your favorite bands. The techniques you study now, and the music you learn to play, will reflect upon the player you become, and the style you have made for yourself.

Hope that helped smile.gif, Later~

Well it would be good start to learn a lot of songs from two bands and sit down and analyze the styles of their guitar players to try to figure out what is the main thing that makes their style unique and recognizable. And than incorporating their "knowledge" into your own playing..But I would not suggest doing any of this..If you are a fan of two bands and know how to play some songs you will definitely be influenced by them any way, and main thing is to be unique and original so you should not make efforts to mix others styles etc in order for you to be unique..You are already unique and have your own style and as you develop your skills you will only enhance what you already got..

Try to learn and analyze their songs, and get the sound their after on their albums. This way you will pick up their styles and fuse them into something new. But as everyone said - don't expect to be a one week project. You'll have to work hard to make a new style like that, it's a big work and time consuming

Wow - thanks everyone for such quick replies!

Yeah, I understand what all of you are saying. I also would like to note that the guitar work of Evanescence is pretty bad if you look at the players around here - but I stricktly meant the mood of the music as a whole, not just the guitar work.

Also, I am completely aware that it will take years - maybe decades to find my own true unique style - I mearly am trying to get started on the right page! : )

As for the "not liking the two bands recognized" - this is true - I see your point and acknowledge that fact.

I'll look around and see if I can find some song tabs by then and maybe I can get moving in the right direction!

Another thing to consider is studying your style as of now, see if there are any common threads to the bands you listed and your own style at this point.

You might find some aspects in common, it will help you alot if you understand your own style at this point in time. Look at the riffs you create, what your ear picks out in a song etc. If you can find some common ground you can use that as a jumping point to fuse the two.

I agree with Daniel, there has to be a analysis from "within" also. WOrk on your self in order to find out what you play like right now, and use ti too in creating a style.

I am also with Daniel, try to find out what those bands are doing, what attracts you about them and what you would like to have in your own style. But be aware of the fatc that creating your own style is not as easy as it might sound like, you will have to work on this and really shape your style, not just copy your fave bands.
