GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Iron Maiden Medley Of 4 Songs

Posted by: Jeroen Jun 20 2014, 03:40 PM

A Heavy Metal Tribute to one of the greatest bands: Iron Maiden.

I created this Iron Maiden medley based on 4 songs.

All guitars played by me. All video editing is done by me.

Up The Irons! Enjoy!

Well done. Video sounds and looks great!!

Your playing is definitely getting better too. \m/ smile.gif \m/

Great job man - I can also see improvement in your playing. It looks like we struggle on the same issues, but I think everyone does when learning a part - your getting much better at your position changes, but still have some timing difficulty. All that would resolve with practicing those parts more, so it's not an issue really, just that the presentation may have been a little premature.

Your video skills are outstanding! I've been playing with Adobe Premier and After Effects for the last couple of days trying to learn how to make my way around those programs. I'm a web and design guy too but never dealt much with video, but now since my work has me on Adobe Creative Cloud, I have access to the programs and I've always wanted to learn them - so this up the Irons Collab video will be my first presentation ever working in the software.

Keep up the great work Jeroen! It's always refreshing watching you have such a great time playing.

Thanks Rileyandrew and spock. It's true that I'm still struggling with timing issues. Timing is my biggest challenge. Good to hear that you see improvements in my playing. smile.gif After all, that's why we are spending so much time with the guitar and here at GMC. Looking forward to see your part in the IM COLLAB, spock! This video with practicing the parts, filming, recording and editing took me a few weeks to complete. Lot's of hours in it. I'm happy (enough) with the final result although there is still room to improve.

Awesome production Jeroen! I'm a big Iron Maiden's fan and I can say that I love the songs that you chose for this medley. As Spock said, you still have timing issue and it becomes very important in some sections. For example, "The Evil that men do" solo seems to be moved from the backing, you play the whole solo a bit after the beat.

In order to work on this, I would first analyze this video. It's a very good reference for noting the things that you should improve.
Write down the parts (with minutes and seconds) that have problems. Isolate these sections, licks and practice them over metronome, focusing on going tight with the drums. Record yourself playing the section, listen to the recording and check if the timing issue disappears.

Another important thing is to analyze if you tend to go before or after the beat and try to play the things thinking on them after or before depending on the problem. When I'm recording a musician at the studio and I notice that he plays a bit after the beat I ask him to try to play a bit faster and this usually solves the problem. He feels to be playing before the beat but the result is that he plays tight. Try it!

Hey Jeroen! Congrats on the great journey this video proves itself to be!

You are a hard worker and I am sure you'll evolve at a really fast pace wink.gif Mate, aside Gabriel's suggestions, I would certainly point out the articulation on which I would suggest you to focus especially on the lead parts:

- isolate the lead parts in the original recordings
- record the lead parts over them
- spot the differences
- focus on fixing the eventual timing and articulation issues

This is how I'd do it smile.gif What say you, mate?

Thanks Sensei, always good to get your feedback. First finish off my entry for the Maiden collab!

Always a pleasure mate! smile.gif Since you are a big Maiden fan, I am sure you'll pull of a great entry for the collab so go for that one first thing and then, I am waiting for the next version of the medley.

If you stay focused on the details I suggested, you will most surely get an improved version. One more thing - if you feel that a certain part is causing trouble, even though you have learned it, bring it here to discuss it smile.gif Sometimes, when we are heads down into a project, we tend to miss some very obvious details and we get a bit stuck - it happens to me all the time and that's why I always like to ask for opinions from my friends who understand and know what's what. Deal?

Thanks, I'll do my best although I'm a little short on time.. I have an intro so far and some basic ideas. Hope I finish it before the deadline!
