Hey Guys..

I have a few questions about thins mic's.. I want to buy one of them and I was wondering if for instance there is one that will be good for micing and amp and also recording vocals?

btw: aren't these mics the same but just a bit visually diffrent ?

Never heard of them. MS? Guessing they are cheap knock off's of Shure SM57 and SM58 then.

They pick up sound pretty much as they are shaped. For example mike a speaker with a SM57 and vocals or a room with a SM58

So what do the MS mikes look like then?

but for instance would the sm 58 be a good mic for recording your amp ??

Sure, it gets the job done.

If you decide to go for the MS knock off mind that in the long run it might prove to be more expensive to buy copies. I've got a Shure SM57 that has lasted me for 15 years. It's worn, dented and even smells wierd but it still works. How long will the knock off last you, 6 months, 2 years or 15 years. It's more of a guess I think.

Specifically about MICs. You might want to start with an SHURE SM57 or SM58. Both are great all around pro quality mics. Often used for Micing Guitar. The main difference is that the 58 has a Pop filter and a slight eq bump around 2k. The SM58 will work on anything and they are relatively cheap. About $100 U.S. Here is a post I created about the 58.

Later on you may want a nicer mic for Vocals, Accoustic Guitars etc. I"ve fallen in love with the Inexpensive MXL 990. It's a "Condenser" Mic and sounds great. You can get it for about $60 U.S. so it's even cheaper than the SM58. Here is my post about it.

I also just reviewed a Mic that I like better than the SM57 58 on guitar cabs/amps. It's called the RAVEN by EV, it was designed by BLUE who make great mics. Here is a link to the post. It's got tons of info.

If you need it for semi pro purposes, then any can serve dual function you need. Remember that microphone is just one of the links in the recording chain. Most important link is not the microphone, it's the acoustics of the room. Musician experience, Tone Engineer experience, Amp, cabinet, placing, preamp, monitors are all very important too. I'm guessing SM58 will do the job just fine if you know what you are doing. It's a good mic. SM57 is good, but people don't tend to put it on vocals that much as much as they put SM58 on cabs. This only means that 57 is more specialized mic for miking the drum set or cabs than for vocals.

Reading this post I found an interesting comparison of these two models ..



In fact, the MS 57(is not shown in this clip) is a lot cheaper than the SM 57..
