cool.gif laugh.gif http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APRpFOwmNWU

Can someone help me on this one it's just a little tricky this is like my ultimate goal. If someone can play this at GMC then I love u (no not really) but it's a crazy solo right?

Posted by: Pavel Feb 4 2007, 11:18 AM

That's a kickass solo BUT:
1. you really need to master all of the techniques to play that
2. you MUST have a Digitech Whammy-Pedal to play many parts of that solo

I also like this video here because it sucks:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1uT8MUr7_4

Not too good playing ha?!?!

Posted by: beebo Feb 4 2007, 10:20 PM

Almost everyone said they suck when they actually play live so I think they're only good because of the sound goes through computers to make it sound more accurate but they are awesome on the cd.

How much would the digital whammy thing cost anyway a lot?

can You or Kris play that? biggrin.gif or anyone on GMC

The Digitech Whammy is around 200$

When i first heard Dragonforce's album i was blown away - i really liked them! I was listening to them for a long time but than i saw that poor video on YouTube and stopped listening their music.

And NO - i can't play it. And i bet Herman is the only person in the world who knows (or not) what he is (isn't) playing because there is shitload of notes there and Whammy is screaming all over the place.
Anyway - GOOD LUCK playing that! smile.gif

I can play the solo from 'My spirit will go on' if that's any consolation.

Dragon force is a terrible band, really. I never liked them. Ever since I watched 'Herman li and Sam totman vs. MARTY FRIEDMAN' (The name of the file should be comical enough) I found out where they stood as guitarists. Namely: Nowehere.

God, that's not even fair, poor Dragonforce sad.gif . Marty is awesome(IMO one of the best guitarists ever), but Dragonforce is still young, and they were a little better in that vid than the GuitarWorld one, what annoys me is their tapping(beeping) wacko.gif . If they practice, and clean up thier playing to what they sound like on the album they'll be awesome. smile.gif

Posted by: Zee Deveel Feb 5 2007, 10:40 AM

Yeah I saw them live at Download Festival 2006, giant pile of shit. They were all out of time with each other and fucked up all the riffs, just sounded like a big noise.

Second video is awesome! hahahaha

Posted by: Steelkonsum Feb 5 2007, 04:53 PM

I think all of you should give them a break.

I'm not saying they are playing perfectly but I really don't see the need to bash them like this. And for brushing up stuff on the computer, I don't know if they do or don't but even if they did - so what? Every otherb and out the there brushes up stuff on the computer, just that it isn't something you normally discuss (except Slayer, who admitted in some interview that they speeded up the songs simply cause it sounded better that way).

I like them, I think their music is really good and I wouldn't stop listening to a band 'cause they suck live. Many bands suck live but are good in studio. And some bands suck in studio version but rock live.

Anyway, that's my two cents.

Posted by: Pavel Feb 5 2007, 05:32 PM

Take Steve Vai, Satch, Cooley and other great guitarists - they all rock live as in the studio!

Blind Guardian is the band that play songs perfectly live - their concerts are simply awesome.

I mean i don't say they are not allowed to make a mistake - but DragonForce suck bigtime live!

Posted by: Zee Deveel Feb 5 2007, 05:34 PM

It's just hilarious that they make themselves out to be some of the best guitarists in the world (and are marketed as such), Herman Li has won various awards for his playing and they're pretty average shredders.

Posted by: Why Feb 5 2007, 05:43 PM

Oh man, I've seen people who think Herman Li is a shredding God.. little do they know..

And Sam, I don't even want to talk about him. If you're claiming Sam Totman played that solo note for note in 'Through the fire and the flames' you must be joking.

Pavel: Yeah, Blind Guardian are awesome live. Also, DT on the Octavarium tour were pretty note for note spot on.

Hiya guys, first post rolleyes.gif
My friend and I have always bickered about Dragonforce.
He is a die hard Dragonforce fan and refuses to believe that they actually can't play what they say they can.
No matter how many videos I show him as evidence he always has an excuse (most of which are pretty drastic laugh.gif )

I showed this video to him and he seemed shocked and used his normal, "Must be drunk" etc excuses.

Then he spotted something quite funny. Watch from 40 seconds onwards and keep your eye on Tom.

laugh.gif

I reckon thats what made him sound so out of tune in that video.

But there is no good excuse for the others laugh.gif Those are just baaaadd
Even if they are always drunk, that's just disrespectful to the fans. I mean, the fans pay good money to go see them and Dragonforce show up drunk and sound terrible? huh.gif
I know I wouldn't be such a loyal fan...

Posted by: Why Feb 5 2007, 11:58 PM

... Which other players that everyone likes is really bad?

Posted by: Steelkonsum Feb 6 2007, 10:05 PM

This is the last post I will make in this thread and I know I shouldn't even bother to post this one but honest to god you guys make me so pissed off.

You sit and bitch over a band because theyre not playing clean on live performances. But I must ask you, have any of you ever played on a stadium in front of hundreds and hundreds of people? Or on national tv in front of even more? Just asking, if you have it's cool but unless you have you might wanna can it. What if they have stage fright? And I am being 100% serious. People can have phobias and problems affecting stuff like live perfomances and it's a mental illness. Just like people can be afraid of spiders, long words, beards etc.

And I know for a fact I play 10 times better at home, in my bedroom with just me listening than I do in front of my girlfriend, family or even the band! Because I am more comfortable here.

I keep hearing all this crap about how they make themselves out to be some sort of guitar gods and blabla. Now I do not know for a fact but, have you ever seen7read/heard them actually say it? Or have you read it in the same magazin where ufos rule USA and Britney Spears have natural boobs? Also, abnout Herman winning a competition - how is this a bad thing? Maybe the others weren't as good and he won, how is this boasting about ones skills?

Anyway, untill you show me a video of yourself playing infront of at least 500 people at 150-200bpm note for note exact and sound perfectly clean I think you should all just f... well. You can guess what I want you to do.

Peace.

Posted by: InstruMental Case Feb 7 2007, 01:22 AM

This isn’t about Dragonforce having stage fright and not executing their music correctly. Judging from EVERY live video I’ve seen of them, they can’t play it period. Their album is a total studio clean-up. That bothers me, but I could even excuse it if it weren’t for the fact that their fans (and some of my friends) pay money to go and see them, expecting what’s on the album only to find out the band can’t actually play their own music in a listenable way.

What annoys me the most is how many of these stupid and/or uninformed people completely idolize them and call them “guitar gods” and such. That’s just mind-numbing because there are countless bedroom shredders out there who are twice as good, have worked much harder on their playing, and many times have tried desperately to “make it” in the music industry but were unable to due to the mainstream media promoting phonies like Dragonforce.

… On top of that, faux shredding just really bothers me.

Hey I wasn't bashing them, but fans do have a right to complain if they spend thier hard earned money for an awesome show and get a poor show. I hope they do practice, and improve thier live skills because what's on the album is good music IMO. Actually if I remember correctly in a Guitar World interview Sam said he sucks.

Yeah, I basically practice like other people go to school. By that I mean I home school by correspondence, so I only have to spend about two hours on my textbooks a day, and the rest I’m free to practice, workout, make stupid videos, or whatever. More recently I’ve been trying to do a full-time practice schedule that covers most of the techniques I want to get good at. So I’ve been waking up at around 6am, starting practice by 7, and then practicing until the evening. But it’s a difficult schedule to maintain, and my right hand has really started to hurt sometimes.

Posted by: Why Feb 7 2007, 04:09 PM

Playing live is a part of musicianship, If they can't play live they should pack up their stuff and quit. I don't see Gilbert, Petrucci, Cooley etc making any mistakes live and their stuff is about 10 times as technical.

I am not very impressed either - I would not say they suck generally though. Writing cool songs and solos is a great ability - performing live is another one. (Note: I haven't heard any of their studio recordings)

These guys are still quite young so let's hope they'll get some more practicing time. smile.gif

Edit: So I checked beebo's original post and the youtube link - that was a really cool recording. Some kind of synth overdub is also audible. It was performed very tight (is it the beer perhpaps! wink.gif )

When you go pro you open yourself up to harsh reality. I would be much more constructive with my criticism of someone who is trying to learn and does not position themselves as professionals.

No mater what they make themselves out to be they are professionals and I have no qualms with just saying they suck. The world is not peaches and ice cream and everything cant be equal and fair some people are better than others and for a professional performance they are not performing at par. Besides technical flaws I must agree with some of the youtube posts that it feels like they are playing fast just for the sake of playing fast and have no soul in there playing.

Are they better than me? Hell ya. I make no qualms about that. Does not mean I cant tell what is good or not. I am not a world famous chef either but I can tell when my food is overdone.

Okay first post in... forever

But I have to say, as much as I love DragonForce (PLEASE listen to the album... it's soooo awesome... and I understand that they are pretty, erm, poor... when it comes to live performances), Gus G of Firewind has got to be among the top guitarists out there.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=2r6QhZl80tU

In my opinion, if Herman and Sam would

A) quit the stage acting... it's not helping at all. Doing all the jumps and whatnot doesn't make a better performance (it actually hurts alot... hence all the tripping/falling)

B) figure out WHAT THE HECK is forcing their guitars out of tune (I honestly think it's all the whammying, but I could be wrong... I've only 'played' *stifles laughter* for 2 years)

C) FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY IN THE WORLD OF HEAVY/POWER METAL STOP DRINKING!! (there IS a video out there that shows sam has like beer cans strapped to his mic stand w/ straws sticking out of each one.... problem much?)

They would probably be GREAT live... but that's just my two and a half pesos.

And for those people that say drugs/drinking is supposed to enhance your guitaring... ummm... no, just... no.

Drugs = "whoa!!! my hands can touch anything but themselves @.@"

(btw I'm going to see DF live tomorrow so ya... here's to hoping something miraculous will happen *stifles laughter again*, but meh, If I have fun and enjoy it, that's all I care about)

Posted by: The Uncreator Mar 13 2007, 12:23 PM

Not all there shows are bad live, i saw them last year and the sound was really good actually, after a little longer, they'll get over the whole being wasted on stage thing, and play better, when you see them play sober, its actaully very very good.

Posted by: EddieB Mar 13 2007, 08:28 PM

That's good to hear... hopefully they will be sober tonight... I'm really looking forward to a good performance ^^

Make sure to let us know how it goes

Posted by: EddieB Mar 14 2007, 07:06 AM

One word (followed by many... but who's counting? ^^)

WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

okay that may not be a word but man... Dragonforce rocked so hard tonight. I admit the stage acting was over the top, but that's who they are so I can't criticize. I'm starting to think that all those videos of their 'bad' performances were all by the same guy or group of people because this was FAR better than anything you'd see out on youtube. There were some funny moments though. Herman got his hair caught in the head of his guitar (kept playing though O.o) and Sam just kept booing Herman during his solos =P Their songs may not have been 'note for note' but I don't think a single person cared.

So ya, don't let all the videos and bad PR turn you away. Dragonforce put on a great show and if you're a fan, you should definitely see them live. \m/ (-.-)

They were pretty awful when they played here in Columbus a while back. I didn't care for their stage presence either because it was mainly the singer throwing water on the crowd while everyone pretended to be jacking off. The best part of the night was when the singer turned it over to the crowd but no one knew the words to one of their older songs and you could tell he had no idea what to do so the song just kinda died for a few seconds.

Im not gonna hate mail you for it, but the fact that you took time to make just cause you dont like the band, is really sad and doesnt speak good of you, its way better to make a video about a band you love.

Posted by: InstruMental Case Apr 2 2007, 09:37 PM

People don’t get that it was just a joke though. I don’t actually “hate” Dragonforce. That would be too strong a word for it. I just dislike the messy playing, and the fact that they’re setting a questionable example for young shredders out there. I think cleanliness and right and left hand synchronicity are extremely important in fast guitar-oriented music. So basically I just find the band’s popularity frustrating, and I figured someone should try and bring that stuff to people’s attention. Most of all I was just looking for a laugh! Some people can take it as a joke, and some can’t.

Posted by: The Uncreator Apr 2 2007, 10:24 PM

I know its a joke, its just so so so overdone, my stand has always been if you dont like someone elses band, even if they are popular for reasons you cant comprehend, its not your place to try and bring it to there attention that there wrong or whatever, or criticise them cause it frustrates you.

I have no clue why alot of people like tool, i find it really boring and uninteresting, and i dont think there as good as musicians as some say they are, but i keep it to myself, because what tool fans hear in there music is different from what i hear. so, when you listen to dragonforce, and you think "God this is horrible, why do people like this", remember there is someone saying "God this is awesome, How can people not like this"

Its all oppinions, and no matter what yours is, theres alot of people with the exact opposite one.

Im not trying to get on your bad side or anything, so try not to take this to personally, maybe my original post could have been less insulting, i dont know.

Posted by: InstruMental Case Apr 2 2007, 11:53 PM

Don’t worry about it man, none taken. I understand exactly what your saying, and this was an extremely rare case for me. Typically I just respect other people’s tastes, because ultimately they don’t have much of a choice about what moves them musically, and their perspective is just as valid as mine. But like I said, the video was just a joke, not meant as a big insult to Dragonforce listeners. I was just displaying another perspective of their technique and their live show. I say just take the music for what it is, and if people enjoy it then more power to them. But at the same time, those people need to understand that there are greater players to explore, because Dragonforce’s technique is not anywhere near the top of the food chain.

Alright thanks for being cool about it.

And just for the record, by NO Means are they the best players ever, i certainly dont think that, they are good and write some really cool stuff, but i dont hail them as the best ever, they are just a fun band for me to listen to.

i agree with the uncreator on opinions.me and my grandpa(he plays also)argue about whos a better guitar player.he always says clapton is better than hendrix, but i think hendrix is better because he plays more like what i listen to.my grandpa plays that(in my opinion)boring, slow stuff.not that clapton plays that, but he doesnt play the harder rock that i like. clapton is a great guitarist, but i just like hendrix because of his music style.and this all relates to what the uncreator said.

Acid Facelift doesn't really match their sound though. Think aboutit... when I think of the name Dragon Force I hear Storming the Burning Fields and Revolution Deathsquad, all those drawn out harmonized solos, the same dam drumbeat, and epic Iron Maiden style vocals. Acid Facelift sounds like a crazy death metal band not posterboys for the best dam cliche metal around.

Yeah there pretty fun to watch, they run around alot, do alot of guitar tricks and whatnot, and also, they drink a hell of alot as well, or atleast sometimes, the first show they drank quite a bit on stage, and yeah they were drunk, but they still played pretty dam good, second time, i barely saw them drank, and there performance was top knotch.

I think Herman Li is actually a really talented guitarist, but it's Sam that ruins everything and is what causes everyone to think they suck live. I saw them live earlier this year and Herman Li did his part of Through the Fire and Flames very well then Sam comes in and screws everything up for the rest of the band. Trading off guitar soloes are really hard to do and the only bands I've seen that can do it well is Megadeth, and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Dude, I'm sorry.

Fu*k Youtube.

I saw Dragonforce last year; 17th May 2007 in Brisbane. They where unbelievable.

Every song was nailed perfectly. Guitarists didn't hit a bad note, infact - the only mistake was the drummer during Operation Ground and Pound.

They ran, they jumped, they span, they drank a [lot], and played perfectly.

Screw the bandwagon haters, they rule.

P.S - Yeah, there are some pretty horrific videos on Youtube to be fair, but hey, that Brisbane show overshadows anything.

Edited for language - Andrew

I'm with Pavel really on Dragonforce. I loved their demo, and 'Valley Of The Damned'. I saw them live years ago now (maybe 2004?) and they were absolutely awesome. For starters their guitars were actually in tune. They completely blew me away. Now though, the new album is god awful, every live performance they do is god awful (with guitars out of tune, Sam clearly drunk, solos sound like crap). They've just got too big for their boots now. They've got a load of new fans new to the genre who think they are gods, when they aren't. They need to sober up, get over the idea that they don't need to practise to put on a good live show, and stop making songs that sound the same.

Mind you Trail Of Broken Hearts is a brilliant power metal ballad.

Posted by: OrganisedConfusion Jan 25 2008, 04:35 PM

Awful band that ruined it for themselves. I saw them long long ago when they supported WASP in the UK and since that gig they've been getting progressively worse with each album and they are so messy with their guitar playing. They need lessons off Vai and Gilbert as those guys have accuracy of possibly 95% plus. Dragonforce are lucky to get 70% accuracy and their sweeping is terrible.

They play pretty accurant from time to time in videos I´ve seen. And they, as I understand it, have decent albums.

That would probably mean that they must be aware how awful some playing is done. If not in the moment due to alcohol, hangover, sickness, camera fobia or whatever they surely must realize it afterwards when looking back at it.
Me, personally, would not release videos that I wasn´t at least a bit satisfied with. And if it´s good or not might depend with the level you´re at. I see no shame in releasing beginner sounding stuff if you are a beginner.

In world wide famous pro videos, shred beginner as I am, (if I ever somehow got in one, haha) I would never play way over my level or just sloppy on purpose and then act like I´m proud. Seems like a weird behavior to do that.

Just my input.

I saw a video where Herman Li screwed up the Through the Fire and Flames solo so bad. The solo begins with some wah, but he accidentally pressed volume control, so the entire solo just virtually stops for about 4 seconds while the rhythm guitar is playing, then he accidentally hits the whammy, so the notes are like 3 octaves above their regular pitch, so it sounds hilarious, he screws the rest up as well. Then Sam comes in and butchers his solo. The entire time their guitars aren't even in tune and the harmonies sound horrible.

Dragonforce is Awful just awful. I apologize but listening to them is like a bad trip back to the 80's. They are a speedy version of Styx, Journey, Foreigner etc. Musically they are not bad. I think they would be better if they did instrumentals only.

When that guy sings I literally cringe. Over produced, over sung vocals with lyrics that Spinal Tap would love. I'd like to hear them with a Metallica type singer - lower, meaner etc. OK I did not mean to insult anyone. My seven year actually relly likes them from youtube. laugh.gif

Knowing them they are going to put out an album which is trying to push all their gimmicks even further. Therefore it will be faster with more stupid noises, and guitar solos, and it will inevitably sound like their last two albums.

Posted by: steve25 Feb 6 2008, 06:25 PM

I seriously don't know what the fuss is. I'm not a bif dragonforce fan but i don't think they're that bad. Ok so they sound bad live but you still like them in the recording studio? So what stops you listening to them. I really like their solos i think they've got great sense of melody unlike some bands. So can someone explain why everyone thinks they're so bad as i really don't know. Unless it's jealousy

Posted by: Duncan Feb 6 2008, 07:33 PM

Jealousy of what? Not being that great at guitar. Yeah their songs are catchy and stuff at first, but after a few years you just get tired of songs that sound similar, and the gimmicks just don't become fun anymore.

Yeah I've been with them since their first demo. I still love VOTD, and to a certain extent SF, but now all their new songs seem to blend together, and it's all too similar. Unless the new album produces something spectacular I'll lose all interest. I am a member of the Dragonforce forum, and the majority of members on there now don't like the band that much but stick around because of the people they know on there and stuff.
