* Jam with me - you will find active collabs here.

* Post a topic on this board, guitar related or not - doesn't matter! You will find that chatting with instructors boosts your motivation to practice.

* You haven't missed my latest video lessons, have you?

* Oh and did you know that to become a killer guitarist you just need to focus on one thing? Everything
else is secondary. Pm me and I will explain.

biggrin.gif Couldn't help but give this thread a name to be reckoned with biggrin.gif Mate, this is your mentoring thread! It's your place of self development - musical and spiritual if you want. Let's start with your story - what do you like to play, what gear do you use, where are you now as a guitarist and musician and where would you like to be in the near/ distant future?

Hey Cosmin - I dig this name - thanks!

Ok,

I'm originally from Southern Africa, but now residing in the UK.

The music I listen to inspires what I play. My favourites are Pink Floyd (mainly the later stuff), Mike Oldfield (guys a genius), Andy Timmons (quite a new fan) - so as you can see very melodic / bluesy.

I also enjoy heavier stuff too but at least with melody - bands like Dead by April, the Unguided etc.

As for gear - I play a red usa fender strat, a reliced green "franken strat" (strat body, tele neck) which I put togeter and a PRS 20th anniversary mahogany 24. I use a fender GDEC amp which is great for practice but have a MESA stiletto head waiting in the wings (no cab yet)

My story is that I have been playing for a long time, but have become very stale and uninspired because I dont have a regular practice routine. My biggest problem IS I NEVER FINISH ANYTHING ! For example, I've been trying to learn the solo for "on the turning away" by pink floyd for a few months now... still not finished!

My future: I want to finish some stuff! I want to properly leard all of the notes on the fretboard. I want to improvise. I think some melodic rock / blues (not too bluesy) would be great.

Ok now over to you!

First things first, I would like to ask you if you have any recordings of yourself playing smile.gif they would help a lot in our quest wink.gif

I'm sure that I'm much more rusty now than when I was practicing more. But I think the above vids are accurate indicator of where I am as a guitarist.

Hey man! smile.gif The recordings are exactly what I needed wink.gif I think you didn't lose touch with rhythm, but your articulation skills could use a good push. Especially that you like players such as Mr. Timmons who is an articulation god biggrin.gif

So, shall we take this thread into that direction? We shall tackle solos from the various lessons around here and discuss concepts behind them, plus techniques used in there.

In the mean time, please take a look at this little video and try to internalize the movements involved by bending and vibrato smile.gif

let me know what you think, ok?

Hey Cos,

Taken on board. It's very expressive. I think my bending might be fair, but vibrato like in the video I need to work on.

Should I practice this video, and record it?

wink.gif yes mate, but I am more interested in the concept rather than playing the exact same notes - choose which notes you want and apply the ideas in the film, record and send them my way biggrin.gif

Hey Cos.

I practiced the technique for an hour then recorded. My finger got a blister biggrin.gif I know it's not perfect but it's already 100% better than before wink.gif what's your feedback?

Yes! There is progress mate! Indeed it is wink.gif Now, there's a certain shakiness in the bends which is normal at this stage - this technique is refined in time, so don't worry ok?

The main idea on which you should focus now, would be to try and bend using the vibrato after a while, not immediately after bending, k? smile.gif Once you get this down, we'll move to actual contexts wink.gif
