In curious coincidence there's a speed picking exercise

e|---------------------------------------------------------18-21-------------18-21-|
b|--------------------------------------------------18-21-------------18-21--------|
g|---------------15-18-------------15-18-18-20--------------18-20---------------|
d|------- 15-18-------------15-18--------------------------------------------------|
a|-16-18-------------16-18---------------------------------------------------------|
e|------------------------------------------------------------------------------------|

in the first six notes of this exercise, i assume you use your ring finger to fret the second note of each string (18ths), and you use your forefinger/index to hold down the 15th frets on the d and g strings. however i can't work out if you use your middle or index finger to fret the 16th fret on the a string at the very beginning. i have difficulty working out which one is supposedly faster.

also is the 20th fret on the g string held down with your ring finger or middle finger?

thanks a lot and sorry if these seem like dumb questions. im working on speed a lot at the moment.

I would fret the 16th fret with my middle, then hit the 18th with my pinky. That way, when it comes to freeting the 15th an 18th frets, my index is in perfect position to hit the 15, while my pinky can still handle the 18.

While going down to the 20th fret, etc... it would use my ring and index fingers because the frets get alot smaller.

thanks i'll try that. i wouldn't have even thought about using my pink that far along on the fretboard with such small intervals.

When watching the vid it seems I use 100% index and ringfinger. Have you tried this?

trying it now. both still seem to be the same as far as speed goes but 100% index and ring finger seems to be the more comfortable one so i'll stick with that.

thanks.

Index and ring buddy, its not just what people say, its about the distance aswell between the measurements of the fret gap and ur finger positioning

thanks a lot im used to using the index and ring now for that particular first part of the lick but still deciding on the best for the latter part of that exercise.

im trying to stop my middle finger flying up into the air when using the index and ring fingers, looks much more professional to have most of the hand on the fretboard smile.gif

thanks.

Yeah, i mean by all means, its not just the fact of using specific fingers because by all rights you could use which ever one you want....

But i think that most people just get used to it and try not to over work there fingers whilst playing....alot of guitarists that start playing for the first month or so do it..... i was one of em! tongue.gif

thread resurrection!

im learning the motto is oops (very cool chilled out song btw). and the very fast speed picking lick with:

----------------------------
----------------------------
---------------------------
------------------7-9------
-----------7-10----------
----7-10-----------------

near the beginning im having difficulty with. again is this index and ring only or is the idea to use the pink for the 10 fret notes and then the ring for the 9th fret. or do you use ring and then middle?

also the whammy harmonics stuff i cant seem to master, from the videos it doesnt look like you are actually hitting the fret with the end of your finger, can you or someone please offer some help with this technique. it sounds great and i want to learn it but am struggling.

also more monster legato runs! these are amazing.
