What do you recommend?

Something to give it a bit more umph. More gain. More bass.

If you do recommend something please include whether or not you own or have owned the piece of gear.

Well Jer back in the day when I had the gear to play live my favorite pedal to push the amp some and warm it up was a Tube Screamer. Of course today it's hard to find the old ones (original) that where really great sounding.

It isn't a shred pedal but it has great tone to put you out front and get a boost for your solos.

Tube Screamer + Marshall = Heaven

I would also go for the Ibanez Tube Screamer, and yes, I own one (actually 3 ) and I used it myself for many years while I was still using my JCM 800, perfect couple. An option would be Marshall's Gov'ner or Govner 2, and again, yes, I have both of them.

The Tube Screamer is one I keep hearing about. And for temporary solos too.

I have heard from a few that its somewhat harsh and may not be as smooth as what I am after. Also I'd likely use it for entire songs if the amps gain isnt enough for that song.

I do plan on trying one. THough it'd likely be the new model. So I can return it if its not to my liking.

Are the currently stocked TS-9's worth it?

Or do I really need to go vintage.

Found this for you. The TS808. Check it out. It's a vintage reissue of the Tube Screamer.

The demo is a little long but he does a great job of explainning how it can be used and how it can shape your sound. Towards the end he runs it through the gain channel for a small boost with no extra distortion and it makes the amp just pop out. Of course if you want or need more distortion just turn it up on the pedal.

I have the Zakk Wylde Overdrive and if you put it in front of a jcm 800 you can either get a lead tone from it OR the bassy high gain sound mr wylde uses (he boosts his solos with a wah, od is always on). That one will give you more bass and gain but it won't make the jcm800 a high gain-numetal amp

Zakk, is that the sound like I hear on "Funeral Bell" off of The Blessed Hellride? Thats a great rhythm tone.

Watching the vid: This is demo'd thru the clean channel on the amp.

Do you guys recommend using a pedal for all the dist? Or boosting the amps gain PLUS a pedal to push it to the next level?

nevermind, I see he demos it over the amps overdrive at the end.

Two of the most popular OD pedals right now are the BB Preamp and Fulltone OCD. I own the OCD and can tell you that it works great as a standalone pedal on a clean channel or as a booster, has sustain for days and really gives you a lot more harmonic content. I haven't tried the BB but I have heard and seen enough of it that I know it's a damn good pedal. Both are true bypass as well. The OCD is basically like two OD pedals, it has one setting called low peak which is more transparent and a bit less gain, and the high peak which adds more of everything and sounds like a cranked marshall when you it through a clean channel. The screamer pedals are great as well too many to choose from, look into maxon as well as ibanez, also Robert Keeley has a couple of modified ones. If I were buying a tube screamer I would probably get the ts9dx, seems to be the most versatile.
Check out proguitarshop.com, they have most of the really good pedals with really good videos including some tubescreamers and the zakk wylde pedal.

Good info.

My problem is I'm not finding demo clips where the pedals are being used for full on metal stuff while being used as a boost for an amp already overdriven by its own preamp.

Know what I mean?

99% the demos I find are classic rock tones via the pedal on a clean amp setting.

My vote on Tubescreamer as the best booster of tube amps of all time. Another good pedal to play with JCM800 would be DS1. It gives that hard driving rock type or distortion, and can really sound great with JCM800.

Yes it is the sound from funeral bell, but that massive low end comes from the Bb standard tuning.

Slayer also use Jcm 800 to get their tone but their marshalls are modded for more gain and they use eq-pedals to give them a metal sound

Last night I tried 3 pedals with it.

Boss SD-1 that has been modded.
Digitech Hardwire CM-2
Ibanez TS-9

The TS-9 was just a bit too fuzzy for me. A littel too "vintage". With the pedal on I am looking for that sharper/crisper sound. That may be tought to get from a Marshall. And to make it more difficult, I still want the marshall sound too.

Which brings us to the CM-2

This pedal lost the characteristics of the amp too much for me. It was a GREAT distortion but it didnt sound like the same amp with more gain. It sounded like a different amp. I lost clarity, definition, and articulation.

The Boss SD-1 (Super Overdrive) Sounded the best of all of them. I'm not sure what mod is in it. (I didnt do it) It had a bit more brightness than the others. Which equated to more the sound I was looking for. And it kept the clarity that the CM-2 lost.

It was almost the EXACT tone of this. \m/ \m/

if at all possible try out the BB Preamp and the OCD though before making a final decision, they can both be very transparent if you want, simply giving you more of what you already have. They really shine in situations where you have a really good amp and really good guitar.

They are both considered boutique I guess, so you won't find them necessarily at guitar center, but most big cities will have a store that caries them or you could order online depending where you live.
Do a search for Andy Timmons on youtube, he uses them, he's not a metal player but you can get an idea of what it's capable of, should be plenty of demos with these pedals on youtube, definitely the OCD will be paired up with marshall stacks in some videos because it's a perfect marshall complement

I think you couldn't go wrong with a tube screamer (ts808), bb preamp or fulltone OCD.

I do have the OCD and I use with a fender tube amp that has digital voicings, so I use it for light blues on the clean channel and i use it as a boost on the marshall setting, sounds wicked. I don't have the means to do any recordings unfortunately. The OCD like I said has two settings, one is like a cranked plexi and the other is more transparent. However both settings work great as boosts, one is a more transparent boost and the other is a more of everything boost. When used as a boost on an already driven channel it really gives you more, more gain and more harmonic content.

MXR 6 band EQ and a BBE Clean boost.

I used to use a tube screamer but it does change your tone a little. This is what I use now. It's like a extension of the amps eq. without changing tone what so ever.

good call on the eq, a lot of people use the eq for gain boosts, and mxr a couple of great eq pedals
