GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Installing A Loaded Pickguard

Posted by: MattE Jan 8 2009, 04:28 AM

Hey everybody!

It's been way too long. My question today involves installing a loaded pickguard I recieved not too long ago. I have access to a soldering station (and I am competent enough to use it tongue.gif), but I just dont know what wires go where sad.gif

There are three unsoldered wires:

One gray wire with a white and black wire at the end (input jack wire?)
one long skinny black wire (ground wire?)
and one shorter black wire that has a metal attachment at the end (a circle-ish shape)

Any idea what goes where? sad.gif

pictures can be added if needed.

Thanks!

The Black and White are to the Jack Plug. One is a shield and one is a Core. The Core should be soldered to the part of the Jack Plug that will make contact with the Tip of the Jack Lead when plugged in!
Sounds like the Long Skinny one is your Earth/Ground and should be soldered to make a connection to the Bridge. (The Tremolo Claw on a Strat style Guitar.)
I'm not sure what your 4th wire is though as you should only need those 3!!!
Make sure it's not come unattatched from anywhere else on the Scratchplate, i.e. the Control Pots or the Switch!!
A picture would be useful!!!

Ground perhaps for attaching to the tremolo?

What pickguard do you have man? It would mean a lot in determining the solution for you.

It's a Mighty Mite white pearloid guitar
Two hot rails and a Motherbucker at the bridge

Check out YT videos for pickguard replacement, I've found this one mate:

Aha! Great reference Ivan!

I'll have to do some more research about the round metal piece wire though

It's starting to confuse me XD

Just a quick update.

Turns out that a wire with a metal ring connector is actually an additional ground wire o.o
I went ahead and soldered that wire to the same spot as the skinny ground wire

Guitar works and sounds great!

Always be careful when playing with a loaded pick guard when the safety isn't on laugh.gif laugh.gif biggrin.gif
