GMC Forum _ Instructors Corner _ Sotw - Lets Make A Video!

Posted by: Andrew Cockburn Mar 27 2009, 06:38 PM

Well, the time has finally come -

I think we are all generally happy with the latest SOTW mix. I may tweak it a little further but the structure will not change now. So first, I would like to thank you for all of your excellent inputs - the song is sounding great and I am proud to be a part of it, playing alongside such a talented bunch of individuals!

Enough of that though, lets make a video for this!

I would like some video from everyone that appeared on the piece, and we will make an amazing video out of this that we can use as a GMC advert!

In general, I would like the following as far as possible:

* Full length or head and shoulder shots, not guitar only shots
* Remember, we are making a rock video here, so RnR clothing and accessories are absolutely encouraged!
* We want as many props and cooll looking items such as amps and mixers in the shot as possible - the opverall look I am going for is that a bunch of us are hanging out in a studio playing together
* Vocalists, please sing into a microphone, ideally without a pop shield

In general, I will be happy for a single take through the song, but if any of you can manage it, I would like to have a second angle as well to add variety - just stand sideways, or a different way around and re-record the parts you did - this will enable me to switch between them and look as if we have multiple camera angles!

For those of you that live in the same area (Kris, Maria, Ivan, Bogdan, Gabriel Luciana) it would be really cool if you could get your video takes with the other person playing, singing or even just standing looking cool in the background - this will make it look like the recording session was all in one place as far as possible, and with some editing we might pull it off!

For example, when Maria records her verse, Kris could be standing in the background not singing, but coming in on the backing vocals, and vice versa - maybe Kris could even come up to the mic for the choruses smile.gif

For Luciana and Gabriel, Gabriel could be playing the Rhythm guitar behind Luciana, Luciana could be just in shot during Gabriels solo

Same for Ivan and Bogdan

* Vocalists, I would like video of your vocal verses for the entire verse including the parts yo uare not songing, and also takes for the backing vocals, ideally different takes for each backing vocal piece so I don't have to reuse any shots

* Guitarists, I would like video of your solos, you can be as flashy as you like! Also, some rythm footage from each of you will help fill in and keep some variety

* Marcus S - I want to feature you heavily during the beginning of of the song when the rhythm comes in - after all, this riff is the most important part of the song so you should be in the lkimelight to begin! I would really like it if I can also get you playing through the whole song so I can keep coming back to you

* Luciana, I would also like video for your improvisation parts at the beginning of verse 2, and in the organ solo

* Bogdan, I would like footage of you playing the whole song if possible as I will keep coming back to you for relevant parts

I hope you will all be able to help with this - we should be able to put together an amazing video to go with this awesome song!

I want to give you all time to work on this but I also want to set a deadline, so I am saying that I will use all the video I can get by the end of May - that's a little over 2 months.

Let the cameras role!

Sounds awesome!
I have to find a way to get that cowbell into the video somehow biggrin.gif

Posted by: Kristofer Dahl Mar 27 2009, 07:35 PM

Yes!! This is likely to be the coolest video EVER at GMC.

Very good recording ideas Andrew - I will think of some cool way both Maria and me can appear in the video (although we record in a small room - we might try doing it somewhere else though).

By the way if somone else has any ideas on how we can make this as cool as possible - now is the time to let it out! smile.gif

I'm already planning that Trond as I understand how important it is to you! I was going to go out and buy one and have me playing it in shot whilst your solo was going smile.gif

Cool smile.gif But lemme ask 2 things: What format should we use (widescreen?) and is there a deadline?

Deadline is the end of May (its at the bottom of the original post).

Regarding format - well I guess I will take whatever you have - I will try and make the vid in widescren overall, but if anyone doesn't have a widescreen camera, that's ok, I'l crop it and edit it to fit.

I think the best plan is to use the standard new GMC mp4 format for this, either regular or widescreen.

Videos will be large so we can use yousendit or similar services, or of anyone prefers you can use my FTP server - I'll publish the details of that elsewhere on request since this is a public board.

One more question: Does anyone have a drum kit that they could mime some fo the drums using? I would like to get a little bit of drum in there somehow - maybe I'll rent one myself for a day smile.gif

Sounds great!

Sounds awesome Andrew. Deadline is pretty loose, so we will come up with something nice for sure! smile.gif

Posted by: Marcus Siepen Mar 30 2009, 05:48 AM

Cool, that deadline should work for me wink.gif

Posted by: Jerry Arcidiacono Apr 1 2009, 11:04 AM

Sounds great! The deadline will work for me too.

Posted by: Muris Varajic Apr 7 2009, 07:07 AM

Seems cool, will do! smile.gif

Posted by: Kristofer Dahl May 3 2009, 01:33 PM

Ok Maria and I have recorded our takes - sending them to you in the this very moment Andrew!

Posted by: Andrew Cockburn May 3 2009, 01:39 PM

Cool! Downloading now !

All participants - I originally asked for video in GMC widescreen format, but I changed my mind, and fortunately Kris is a mind reader smile.gif Can I please have all footage in its original raw form, whether that is MiniDV, AVC or whatever please?

Thanks !

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic May 3 2009, 03:59 PM

Does that mean we can upload the videos in 4:3 PAL, like the cam source?
And we can use compression (like AVC codec), raw DV AVI files are huge in terms of uploading resources here biggrin.gif

Posted by: Andrew Cockburn May 4 2009, 03:43 PM

I'll take whatever you get form your camera smile.gif

I'd prefer raw uncompressed footage, but if that is too much to upload we could go for H.264 compression at the original camera resolution.

My aim is to author this as a 720p youtube vid so I need as much resolution as I can get - I know that there will be issues scaling up some of the lower resolution footage but I hope to find creative ways around that!

Regards,

Andrew

My camera offers widescreen mpg's, would that be fine?

Perfect smile.gif

I just started the Vegas project for this - Kris and Maria are already making me laugh smile.gif (Well mostly Kris actually, Maria is just looking cool!)

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic May 7 2009, 07:58 PM

Great Andrew, we'll try to record something soon! smile.gif 4:3 AVC sounds like a good choice to me, we'll try to find some sort of a quality/size balance.

Posted by: Andrew Cockburn May 29 2009, 03:48 PM

Bump!

Just a few days to go, and I have only received Kris' video so far - its going to be a little sparse unless I get a deluge of videos in the next couple of days!

Still, this could work out, I'll just make myself the star of the video and pretend I can play all of those amazing solos smile.gif

i missed this thread Andrew . is it too late to record a video or i still have the time.
and you mean to record a play back video with previous audio what we had sent before

Posted by: Andrew Cockburn May 29 2009, 10:52 PM

Hi Hisham - yes - see the top of the thread, I would like a video of you playing your solo please smile.gif

Posted by: Jerry Arcidiacono May 29 2009, 11:33 PM

I will record my videos this weekend Andrew. I will send to you the files as soon as possible.

Posted by: Andrew Cockburn May 30 2009, 07:03 PM

Thanks Jerry - I won't pretend I played your solo then smile.gif

Posted by: Bogdan Radovic Jun 2 2009, 10:25 AM

Sorry for the delay Andrew!! sad.gif I was really swamped and everything, I'm still am for few days but I'll get to recording my take as soon as possible! smile.gif Sorry once again sad.gif

Posted by: Trond Vold Jun 8 2009, 09:19 PM

Oh poo! I've been so swamped at work lately i forgot all about it sad.gif

Posted by: Andrew Cockburn Jun 10 2009, 09:55 PM

It's ok Trond - I am still missing quite a few vids so i am extending the deadline until the End of this month - guys please do your best to get me some video - this will be a super cool video if we get enough input smile.gif

Posted by: Bogdan Radovic Jun 15 2009, 12:34 AM

I will record my take as soon as I get out of "work swamp" sad.gif sad.gif I'm so sorry for delay...

Posted by: Marcus Siepen Jun 25 2009, 01:26 PM

I am sorry to delay the whole thing, but I also had no chance so far to record my video, we started touring again for the summer festivals, thats also the reason why I am not very active here on GMC in the moment, but I will come up with a video as soon as possible.

Posted by: Adrian Figallo Nov 10 2009, 07:09 PM

what happened with this sad.gif?!

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic Nov 14 2009, 01:39 AM

Nobody did finished the takes really, and I'm really sorry, cause Andrew put lot of effort into this, and I'm sure he would put even more to make it all look great.

Perhaps we can do another one of these, but with a bit easier tasks of video production. Like we record in front of a screen, like a regular video take, and then make it as a video (with cool effects).
