Yeah, I am consumed in music right now; hence, I don't have a girlfriend right now because I would want to give her fair time. I'm way too consumed in guitar, and it wouldn't be right. Perhaps I'd be into find a girlfriend, or tinkering with a computer all the time if I didn't play music. Or maybe I'd be a big gamer.
I found this Death Worm game, and it's so addicting. LOL. I don't know why. |

If I didn't play a musical instrument, I would've found another outlet to focus my energies in order to develop another skill. One should be able to adapt to whatever life throws at him/her. Finding that right balance between career/ guitar is also quite hard to achieve. Which is why one of them always suffers. The trick is to keep trying and never give up. Just enjoy the journey.
If you are the next Steve Vai, you'll probably feel it yourself and others around you will too. So that's a sign to sacrifice more things and just focus on excelling at music. But if you feel that realistically you are not gonna be the next big thing, then it's always practical to have something to fall back on but still continue to play music. Education is important. Not everyone is privileged to make the most of it. So don't take it for granted. If you are letting your guitar affect your grades, then you're probably not doing something right. If anything, guitar practice should improve your focus and concentration that should help you in your studies. It should keep your mind sharp. I have a bachelors and a masters degree and I felt the same way when I was studying but it has some benefits in the long run. Not all of it though, as grades are NOT a reflection of how successful you will be in life. Life is much more than guitar and music. Not undermining them at all. I am VERY passionate about them. But to live completely, one must explore and experience everything ....but it comes at a cost: TIME. If it's worth it or not is upto you to decide. If there was no computers, I would be doing some graphic designs. I wouldn't have played guitar if there were no computers.

Exactly! A lot of my discipline came from studying guitar and yes, I applied it in everything i do. I've seen so many good points in this topic so far, that I can't stay away from writing a few lines myself.. This morning I came home from down town and I was thinking of how this damn time passes by - I barely get to do the stuff I'm working on and ...whoooshh, the day is gone... Time is what we make of it indeed. It is our greatest resource and our greatest enemy in the same time. Life should be an inspiration for us all regarding everything we do..It's not how much you practice but how much you practice consciously and how you manage to resonate with the creation flow so that your study may have not been in vain. I have my own little company, I play in 4 bands, I teach at GMC, I organize modern singing workshops, I have a family and 2 dogs and maybe a few more other things I am young and powerful, but at some point people ask me "How long will this madman rhythm last? 5-10 years more?" "When a kid makes his/ her way into your life, things will get even more complicated" - I guess, but after all this, I realized that my energy actually comes from doing all these things and without them, I would be as dry as a desert. I would never see myself NOT playing or making music, it's like filling a sink with water and expecting it not to spill - i would probably go insane or find another way of expressing myself. On the other hand though, if I wouldn't be doing everything else I'm doing, I would probably not have the inspiration to write music so I guess it's impossible to have one without the other - at least for me. I dunno how anybody else ticks but this is my mechanism That's a very honest post Cosmin, cheers! Myself I think music is something that has connected me with a deeper truth of my existence, and that is invaluable. And people say it's cool too hahah I'd probably be doing the exact same thing my mates are doing, becoming a lawyer, a doctor, engineer, I think it's not good to let the world decide what's good for you, let's face it, whatever it is you are going to do, it's only 80 years (being optimist), and then it's gone, so I don't worry too much about it and don't put too much importance into becoming "the great artist" or "the great business man", the result is taking life with ease and let things happen with no judgement, But out of this state, new things start to emerge, and I say it out of experience, -------------------- Visit my:

Oh man, I would probably be stuck somewhere in some computer office writing code or databases
Fortunately, I played lots of gigs, recorded couple of albums, had lots of fun, and discovered GMC! This post has been edited by Ivan Milenkovic: May 30 2011, 07:53 PM -------------------- - Ivan's Video Chat Lesson Notes HERE

Great thread! I've "Always" wanted to play guitar. Since just after I could walk I started asking my folks for one. I hear that same thing all the time from folks about "Always wanting to play an instrument" to which I always reply, "So did I. What's stopping you?" As if folks hit a point and think, "well, it's too late, I'll never play an instrument". Poppycock. Picking up an instrument is one of the best things IMHO you can do with your life/time/effort. Music add so much to life. Playing it adds even more. If I couldn't play guitar, I"d probably play drums, keys, whatever really. But even if I lost both arms, I'd still write music with a mouse using my toes. For me, life without music just seems, awful. I must also say how thankful I am for GMC. I come from a long line of Teachers in my extended family and I LOVE teaching. I also LOVE guitar so teaching guitar started for me almost as soon as I learned to play. Being able to reach out globally have have a Video Chat session with players from all over the planet is honestly nothing short of Miracle for me. I love this place. Props to Kris and everyone here @ GMC! Todd nice Todd! -------------------- Visit my:

mmm difficult question, I can't imagine my life without the guitar... but I think that I would have become a 3D Animation Designer, I really like what the guys of Pixar can do... Video Games developer would be also cool.
