Strings, Needs advise on string size, and tonal options.

My name is Ryan, I've been playing guitar for about two years and am beginning to take my playing very seriously. I have developed a sensitive ear and am starting to explore my string options. When I began playing I used any brand of .9 strings. I am currently using .10 Ernie Ball. I play on a Gibson SG Faded. I play mainly Indie and Hard Rock. I'm looking for that warm full Gibson sound.

Which strings brand would you suggest?
and what are the differneces tonally between brands?



I would experement to find my own preference, but it will cost quite a bit to purchase all the different brands.


also... I may be purchasing a Fender Stratocaster soon. Which strings do you think would suit a Strat for a nice bluesy Hendrix/SRV/John Mayer type tone? smile.gif

Hey Noodles, that's a golf ball people use around here. You play golf?

Nice to see a local so I thought I would reply. I have played a lot of different strings through the years. I used D'add for a long time (9 -42) and they where fine but there was something missing and they didn't last long (imho).

I now use EB Hybrid Slinky 9-46 and couldn't be happier (a mix of 9 and 10 gauge). You get a big sound (from E, A, D) and can still bend and get great vibrato from the G, B, E. They are cheap so give them a try. You might like them.

Thanks for the advice.

I'll look into that, I've been wondering if there is a good mix between 9s and 10s I could find. I've been pretty satisfied with Ernie Ball, I'll give the hybrid slinkys a shot.

I used D'add for about a year, I didn't like them much, they seemed to die really quickly for me. and the tone doesn't seem to keep that 'new string life'.

So far I'm going to stick with ernie ball. but I've heard that DR makes a good string? have you used them?

Had the same prob's with the D'add. One session and they where dead, no tone and tarnished. Hope you like the Hybrid.
