So far I have done nothing except 4/4 time. I came across a lesson this morning in 7/8. Can someone enlighten me on this? Thanks.

Hello Toroso,
yes 4/4 is the common time signature in music world. You can find many songs in 4/4 beat,
Other common time signatures are 2/4 (Disco rythm),3/4,6/8,12/8

Here is a lesson in 12/8 by Jerry

If you can't understand what does a time signature mean Here is a great theory article in Andrew's theory board.

7/8 is used often in eastern melodies, and it is characteristic to Macedonian style melodies. Unlike 4/4 which has 4 quarter note beats in a bar, 7/8 has 7 eight note beats, and you count them: | 1-2-3 1-2 1-2 | 1-2-3 1-2 1-2 |

You can check out my two Macedonian Style lessons, they are fairly easy and use 7/8

Start by playing something - a bend, a riff, a scale, a song - very slowly; if you make a mistake, start over; do this over and over, until you can play it flawlessly - and I do mean flawlessly - many times in a row. Next, gradually increase the tempo. Eventually you'll be flailing like a madman.
